The thing with 3G is that you'd have to pay extra or even get into a sort of contract with a cell phone carrier for it. With how expensive that can be, it'd make a year subscription to Xbox Live look like pennies by comparison.
So yeah, wifi is nice. But I honestly don't care about 3G features at all for a gaming console. I'll just stick to a smartphone for that.
Speaking of smartphones, I'm pretty interested in the PSN being available on Android phones (I'm planning on getting one later this year). Just hope that isn't a Japan-onry thing. PS1 classics on an Android phone would be pretty sweet.

Oh I agree. I won't even pay the ripoff rates the cellphone companies want to charge for data on a cellphone, much less a gaming console. Still, I think 10 or 20 years down the line, there's a good chance this sort of connectivity will be ubiquitous. It's just not time yet.

www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/01/29/hirai_ngp_details/Clarifications from Kaz Hirai: - 3G is indeed only on some models, wifi on all (but available models will vary by region)
- You can't use it as a phone.
- It's backwards compatible with PSP, but only via PSN. (Boo!)
- No video out, at least on launch hardware version. I guess they could always add it on a later revision like they did with PSP.
- It doesn't run Android.
The best news here as far as I'm concerned is that with backwards compatibility confirmed, it should still be plausible for XSeed to continue releasing PSP Falcom games, even once NGP launches. They might have to go download only in the worst case, but being playable on the new system should be helpful in terms of sales. I saw some other comments the other day from Sony execs regarding price, and they said they aim for it to be competitive with the 3DS. Of course, I'm not sure what exactly Sony's idea of competitive is. Hopefully that means it'll be closer to 300 than 500 though. Too bad about not running Android. I suppose Sony could still wise up and allow homebrew app development for NGP OS... but that's probably too much to hope for.

I've been pretty much fine with them. I mean, I'd have prefered if they'd gone with sollid state media in the first place too, but I don't hate them or anything.
I was still kind of hoping for some sort of UMD drive add-on, but after the Go debacle, I wasn't expecting much. I mean even if I had to plug the thing in via a usb cable to play games, and couldn't copy them to internal storage, having the option would sure be nice.

I really want XSeed to bring out the rest of those Falcom games too. Only thing I wonder is, do games sell well enough over the PSN for the Sora no Kiseki games and Zero no Kiseki to still be profitable enough (since they're such large games to translate?)

I wish there was some way to register UMD's you own to your PSN account so you can get a download voucher for them or something. If any sort of system existed so you didn't have to double dip for the same exact game that'd be really helpful. Of course, this is Sony and they won't do anything to convenience the customer.

I find it incredibly annoying that you CAN'T register a game you already own. Sony expects us to be so obsequious that we'll just buy every game twice.

I think 3G is where it's at. Multi-player online gaming is going to be the norm as time goes on and this is the first sign of a gaming portable moving in that direction. Hopefully, since there's potentially less activity than a smart phone, the fee will be less, or else I don't see a lot of people doing it.
No video out is a real shame. I think portables with video out will replace consoles soon and I think they could bring this console more into the future if they included it.
But I'm damn happy about dual sticks. Why the hell it took this long for a portable to get them is beyond me. Lack of a right stick was a major detraction to the PSP's library of 3D games and I'm glad they finally decided it was time.
The backward compatibility issue disappoints me but I expected it. That's why I'm glad that I'm going to hack the hell out of my PSPGo (once they catch up to my firmware) for that stuff. Nothing like all of my PSP games with composite out and Dual Shock 3 Support!

My guess is that 3G might come with Playstation Plus.

It's odd that it doesn't have video out, considering that the last two (shit three?!) models of psp have had it, and that they are touting it having "ps3 graphics" Why is that being deprived at all?Unless they have plans for it to stream to tvs, through the ps3 or otherwise.
