Has anyone ever like the oddball in a series more than all the others? While writing the 19XX article, I found out that my favorite was 1941, which is the oddball in the series for many reasons. (Takes place in Europe, long levels, far shorter than any other game in the series)
A few other games where I like the oddball more than the rest of the series: Super Mario Bros. 2 (The one with the vegetables) R-Type Leo Fire Emblem 8 Shippu Mahou Daisekusen

Super Mario Bros. 2 (The one with the vegetables) HELLS YEAH! \m/ Er, I mean that's my favorite entry in the SMB series too. I always liked the change in gameplay. I mean, throwing dudes at dudes like some sort of dude missile never gets old. Zelda 2 and Metroid 2 are also my favorite entries in their respective franchises, both of which have a reputation as being the odd man out.

Fire Emblem 8 is an oddball?
I dunno if it counts but I still like the original NES SMB the best. I play it like once a week.

Shadow the Hedgehog. Under all that angst, narm, extreme attitude and gunplay, there's quite fun gameplay, but no one seems to believe me. Or doesnt care.

Hahah I love R Type Leo! It's the only game in the series that I really like a lot! Also, FFV and FF8 are my favorite in the series so

Man, how did I glaze over Leo. R-Type 3 is my favorite of the R series that I've played, but Leo is a close second. Shadow the Hedgehog. Under all that angst, narm, extreme attitude and gunplay, there's quite fun gameplay, but no one seems to believe me. Or doesnt care. Honestly I really want to see a game that plays the same as Shadow without the need to wade through shit to get to it. The mix of guns with speed was a great idea. It's the closest I've seen a game match the momentum of the original Strider in 3D.

I liked "Metroid 2" better than the first and third game. Also got a soft spot for "Zelda II." DQ5, especially the SNES version, is also pretty oddball in that series. Does "Shadow Dancer" on the Sega Genesis count? If so, there's another one.

In fact, I feel that if you took the whole high-speed, grab-anything-as-a-weapon, branching-storyline gameplay and made it an original IP with better programming, you'd have a really awesome game.

Metroid: Other M
It's one of those games that I think would benefit from a second playthough, now that all the sticking points were worked out the first time around and all the cutscenes can thankfully be skipped (Samus is still a total badass during the runny shooty parts of the game, just saying)
It's still a deeply flawed game, but I still found it very enjoyable.
edit... Good call on Knuckles Chaotix. That game is rad.

Castlevania 2 is awesome, graveyard duck and all. So is Zelda 2. Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter is the best game nobody liked. =( Phantasy Star III is more fun and interesting than anybody gives it credit for.

Shadow the Hedgehog. Under all that angst, narm, extreme attitude and gunplay, there's quite fun gameplay, but no one seems to believe me. Or doesnt care. I don't find this too far fetched. The game certainly had good ideas going for it. But the lameness and angst raped it to death; I enjoyed it with my siblings as a kusoge. Um... I'm not sure how one would define an "oddball", but I've played the shit out of Street Fighter: The Movie, to the point where it's one of the only reasons I open MAME (yes, I also have 3rd Strike and the Alpha games, but I enjoy this one much more). There's just something magical about making 14 hit air combos only by mashing out LP Shoryukens with Ryu. The game is so broken that it never ceases to give lols. Also, even though I suck horribly at SHMUPs in general, I find something magically enticing about the MSX Gradius 2. I can't really explain it. Also also, kudos to whoever mentioned Knuckles Chaotix. My bro and I killed many an afternoon with our Espio/Charmy combo.

I thought this was gonna be about characters and I was about to cheer for Faust (GGX) and Mukuro (Last Blade 2) and how I considered getting SamSho Anthology just for Kusaregedo.
Anyway, Harmony of Dissonance.

First of all, I think Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance is fantastic. Aria of Sorrow is arguably the more polished game but who wants polished? Everyone, I guess. Except me. I want quirky and "wrong". I'm not trying to be different. I just found it more interesting than any other Metroidvania ever made. Also, I must admit that I enjoyed Suikoden IV a whole lot more than I would like to admit. It's not my favourite in the series, but I think it's seriously underrated. To this day I haven't met one single person who likes it. Not IRL, not online. This has made me seriously question my taste level, but in the end I liked the game. Deal with it
