I played a demo unit last weekend and in my experience the effectiveness of the 3D depends a lot on the game.
SFIV was a letdown- it looks like a hugely scaled down version of the console versions (not unexpected) and the 3d effect just isn't impressive.
Then I went on to try the Sengoku Musou game and it was actually really impressive! 3d doesn't add anything of substance to the game, but it looked cool I guess.
I guess it comes down to the nature of the game. SFIV is played on a 2d plane whereas in Sengoku Musou you are running into the screen.

Once again, I don't see how it's "hugely scaled down", unless you miss the annoying people and effects in the background during the fight. It has all the modes from the console version of the game plus 3DS extras. Ono really made sure the 3DS version was basically perfect, and he was so impressed with the job he's thinking of putting Street Fighter x Tekken on the system. I did find the 3D more impressive with the behind-shoulder view, but it was pretty good and clear normally.

Games that would sell me a 3DS:
Tomba! 3 (or was that owned by Sony? Can't remember.) Klonoa 3 (Please happen) Shining Force Trilogy (1,2,3) Castlevania (sidescroller) Kirby (Sidescroller. Something along the lines of Epic Yarn, but definitely not a port)
Yeah, that's about it for now. Though my guess is that it's Super Mario that will make me go out and buy a 3DS eventually. That, or Castlevania, depending on what kind of Castlevania it is. I don't want a handheld, GoW-style Vania. Even if the hardware is able to handle it.

The controls and mechanics are spot on, and the graphics are really good especially for a launch title port of a current gen game. It's not arcade-perfect, but it's pretty damn impressive nonetheless. The 3D isn't the best, but I think that has to do with my eyes more than anything since I was having the same problems with a couple of the other 3DS games I tried. The 3D doesn't seem to work too well with my eyesight.

The character models look pretty close to the console versions, but the backgrounds are extremely basic.

To be honest, my main gripe with the 3DS is the fact that it has obvious flaws that leave room for improvement in the next hardware revision, which is inevitable in the next couple of years. It feels so wasteful to buy a $250 device that will become obsolete so quickly. The two most annoying issues for me are the low battery life and the display issues when playing normal DS games. Will these issues be addressed in later models? Who knows? But either way, I really feel like I need to hold onto my money just so that I don't get ripped off (again). And even aside from that, the color selection is so fucking horrible, and this seems to be a reoccurring issue with Nintendo. I would have settled for either the purple or the red 3DS, but knowing Nintendo, those will probably be released only a few months before the hardware revision is announced, and they'll probably cost extra due to being packaged with a shitty game that I don't even want.

What DS Display issue? You mean the one that can be solved by booting the DS game by holding Start+Select?

The true res feature can be performed by holding either Start or Select but I agree it makes DS games difficult to play. The upscaling blurriness is painful to see and the true res feature is too small right now. I still use a DS to play DS games and am fine with that.
I'm not sure in what interesting ways Nintendo could improve the system's common gripes. The battery is already much larger than in the DS models and there's really no way to permanently fix DS visuals at the same size because the 3DS resolution is just different where nothing can be done about that at this point.
The only main issue I have with the system is that the 3D has been less than impressive for my eyes so far and there aren't enough interesting games yet.

Really? Is 'black' such a horrible shade for a system? It's pretty standard. And anyways, pretty much every system has had a black version. Really, colour? Blue and black... I see no issue at ALL in the colour scheme. Did I see a bandwagon driving past???

Okay, I really need to know, what the hell does everyone find so offensive about the blue? Well, it's not 'Red', for one. And we all know red makes things run faster In all seriousness, shit. Consoles used to come in ONE COLOUR. And I'm pretty sure everyone was happy with that. "OMG! That Dreamcast... it doesn't come in MOTHER OF PEARL!!! NO DEAL! I can't buy a Dreamcast till it comes in MOTHER OF PEARL, or that Lilac colour that I am ever SO partial to..." Is this REALLY what the consumer has been reduced to?

I think it's a bit different for handhelds, where it is a thing you're going to be able to carry around with you, where it could potentially be used in public, so I could see people having a certain level of hang-up about owning, say, a pink DS, or one that's shaped like teddy bear's severed head.
But that said, I really like the blue, and I've received nothing but positive comments from non gamer friends in regards to the blue. It seems to be exclusively within the gamer community that the blue is so reviled, and I have no idea why.
