They also did an incredible job with Armored Core 4, and then one-upped even that with For Answer. They play totally different from the previous games and watching someone really proficient play the game is an amazing sight to behold.
From Software don't put out a ton of games, but everything they have done this generation (with the exception of Dot Game Heroes which was awful) has been great. Even Tenchu Z brought something new to Tenchu, since instead of a standard stage-by-stage setup you could choose your missions, make your own ninja, etc, plus it had online play.

Capcom of Japan, after Final Fight Streetwise, I think it's abundantly clear that no, you just have no fucking clue what is popular in the US.
Well, I think maybe the problem is that what they think is cool in the US is somehow misunderstood. It's probably why we have an Edward knockoff for a new Dante. Capcom's all like, "WHY WON'T THIS SQUARE PEG FIT IN THIS ROUND HOLE?"
(though I'm one of the few who liked 3D Bionic Commando, yeah they're going down the tubes)

I liked Tenchu Z, and I lament the loss of the series after that.

I liked Tenchu Z, and I lament the loss of the series after that. There was a new Tenchu game made after that for the Wii, though I heard conflicting impressions of that.

Wow, Capcom Japan is fucking stupid. They probably got that impression because, really, what Mega Man games have actually sold well recently? Mega Man 9 did quite well, but I don't think 10 went much of anywhere. Unfortunately in business-speak, that means the character isn't popular. It also doesn't help that the quality of his games have been pretty inconsistent over (at least) the last ten years, making even fans wary. Mega Man is a hugely popular character but when they keep sticking him in portable RPGs no one cares about, of course no one's going to buy them!

From Software may not be the most critically acclaimed studio ever, but their core franchises - Armored Core and King's Field - are loved by many, as are their other titles for that matter. Have they had a few duds? Sure, but so does just about any developer that's been around for a while. They make quality games that appeal to a specific audience, without compromising their games in order to appeal to the broadest group of people possible. Demon's Souls may be their first big hit (which still isn't anything more than a blip compared to the Modern Warfares of the world), but From Software has been around for a long time, and they will continue to do well as long as they maintain their development philosophy. From Software makes games without worrying about whether the entire planet likes them, because hell, they're fairly niche in the first place. As a result, their games have a unique flavor that you just don't get elsewhere. I wasn't knocking From Software. I like a lot of their games. Moreover, I'm a Koei fan, so I'm all for the doctrine of a game publisher who focuses solely on pleasing their own, already established fan base and could care less about anyone else. I was more illustrating the fundamental difference between From and big companies like Capcom, Konami, Namco etc. They're huge companies with huge payrolls that can't survive on the type of income a niche audience would provide. And right now, Japan is pretty much a niche audience, so it makes sense that the big studios are outsourcing their work in an attempt to capture Western audiences. Lost Planet might've been a critical failure, but they were trying to do something with it that From doesn't have to because they lead a less taxing lifestyle that affords them the luxury to produce games important to them and their fans. I'm not condoning Capcom or Konami's current business model, but they're trying to make money. Maybe when this Western gaming push is over and the pendulum swings back to Japan-centered gaming (which it inevitably will), they'll put some interesting shit out again. But until then, they need to roll with the punches and try to stay relevant. And right now, relevant means samey Western-style bullshit with grit, zombies and lots of brown.

I was going to bring that up actually. How much had the recent Mega Man games been selling anyway? I know Powered Up and Maverick Hunter X both bombed on the PSP (or else, we would have gotten sequels by now), while ZX Advent and Star Force 3 came out in 2007 and 2009 respectively and got no further sequels .
As far as game companies are concerned, popularity means how much the recent games have been selling, not the series' actual recognizability. It doesn't really matter how many nostalgiasnobs are on a video game forum telling each other how Mega Man II was the best in the series if they're not buying the latest games in the series.

I just read this, partly hoping it was an April Fools joke. What a shame. Yet I guess without Keji Inafune it was destined to be this way. "sigh"
