I only got my email from Sony this morning. The usual spiel - "watch your credit card statements," "sign up for a credit report service."

This whole situation is so very convenient for Microsoft that, given their colourful anti-competitive track record, it's not all that much of a stretch to think they have had a hand in this.

Actually that is quite a stretch. Let's not delve into paranoid conspiracy theories here.

I agree with Onyx; it is a pretty decent stretch. Quite frankly I can't recall any instance from, say, the past decade in which Microsoft actively sabotaged a competitor.

Besides if it ever got out, the backlash from both the consumer and the authorities. Microsoft may have dubious methods at times, but I doubt they'd do something so blatantly criminal.

I've known a few people to have traded in their PS3s for a 360 over this ridiculousness, but I wonder if any of that is happening in Japan? Sony's brand loyalty is much stronger over there and I'm wondering what the reaction is to all this. I got the email for my JPN account yesterday and the normal account the day before that. And might I suggest we drop the "This never would have happened with MS" arguments. Repeatedly saying that someone else has or would have handled this situation better will just have us running in circles.

Sony's "welcoming back" PSN/Qriocity/PS Plus users this week by offering free stuff and an extra 30 days of subscription time to those who are Qriocity or PS Plus members. I'm not sure if this is them being gracious and accepting their losses, or if they're trying to "hush money" their way out of this.

Anyone who hasn't received an email yet? I haven't and am starting to worry Sony decided to ban or close my PSN account for various reasons.
Edit: also earlier someone said they hoped someone got fired for this. I really hope not, because whoever gets fired is usually not who is responsible.

Someone, at some point in the chain of command, made the decision that upgrading their security measures was not a priority. That person/people need(s) to be dealt with.

And in an ideal world that would happen. In this world however, it's sadly more likely that the wrong person will get fired.

So, nobody should get punished because the wrong person might get punished? The company as a whole is at fault here.

No Email for me either though I never put my Credit account details into PSN juist used pointcards inatead so that might be why you have not got one.

So, nobody should get punished because the wrong person might get punished? The company as a whole is at fault here. Nobody should be punished because the wrong person is the most likely to be punished. I don't really want someone who did nothing wrong to lose their job. Do you want to be fired because your employer made a mistake and blamed it on you? Maybe, they haven't had my credit card in a while, but credit cards weren't compromised so that should be irrelevant. Personal information was compromised (latest news is that passwords were probably hashed btw).

And how do you know this? What if the right person gets punished and rightly fired?

I don't, but since there's a pretty large risk I don't think we should be demanding people be fired. Especially since there's no advantage whatsoever to us for that being done.
