Contra Force and Legacy of War are good. OBJECTION!............. ummmmmm... well... I haven't played much of Contra Force, and I've never even touched Legacy of War, so I should probably just plug it. But I gotta be honest... that's the first time I've ever seen a favorable opinion of both games on the Internet. Agreed! Granted, it does feel like it's lacking something in light of Gradius Gaiden, but it's still a rocking fun ride regardless. Allow me to bring up Ninja Gaiden 3. Personally, I think it's a damn good game, but definitely the weakest entry in the NES trilogy. The plot is fubar, the challenge is infuriating, and the music isn't as good as the first two.

OOPS, that came out wrong. I meant "Contra Force and Legacy of War are good candidates for this article." The games themselves....yeah. Not so hot.

Nice backtrack Kurt, we all know you love Contra Force and Legacy of War. I'd say Contra Force is the bigger disappointment of the two. Legacy of War, I mean we kind of weren't expecting much to begin with given the new developer and the shift to 3D graphics. Contra Force is SOOOO glitchy though with so much slowdown coming from a series known for its tight controls and intense speed. It had some good ideas that the NES hardware is incapable of handling. The shift to having more obstacles instead of enemies to fight is the real letdown though. It also requires much more memorization than any other Contra game I've played (except maybe the Shattered Soldier boss fights).

Yeah I'd stick up for Contra Force, in that it wouldn't been good if it didn't slow down every time you press a button. Also, the characters needed to walk faster, and the power-up system just didn't work.
Legacy of War also would've been decent if not for (A) the floaty controls and (B) the crappy perspective. It actually felt good, inasmuch as it was pretty action packed, but trying to hit anything airborne was just ridiculous, and just attempting to dodge bullets was more difficult than it should've been. Plus it looks really ugly.
I'd venture Legacy of War sticks out more if you compare it to something like Symphony of the Night - one classic updated brilliantly, the other, not so much.

OBJECTION!I have photographic evidence of you hailing Appaloosa as the world's new overlords! ;D Okay, now I'm just being a jackass. In all seriousness, I'm sure there has to be at least ONE person out there who likes Legacy of War. But yes, it would be a perfect candidate along with C: The Contra Adventure.

I admit to sorta liking The Contra Adventure.
Seriously.
Parts of it, anyway. The side scrolling levels are crap, especially the gravity level (ARGH) but 3D levels are actually kinda fun.

I disagree about Doom 3 - it's about as far from a survival horror game as you can get without throwing in pink bunnies everywhere. Sure, it's spooky, but it's still about the same run and gun stuff as before (only exception being that you have to reload your weapons). Ammo is quite plentiful, essentially removing the survival aspect. I dare say it's TOO plentiful (especially in the case of the shotgun).
Unreal 2? Well, considering that the original had this sense of awe from landing on a new planet and having no idea what it's like, Unreal 2's story-based architecture (in addition to the fact that the main character speaks, which really kills FPS games for me) and barely-improved gameplay just don't add up. It sure looks pretty though...
Descent 3. Here I was expecting another good drop into the mines, and a lot of the game actually takes place above ground or in other artificial constructions. The awkward inventory system (especially in the second level) hurts this very badly, and it takes a very long time to come up with a control scheme that works well for you (that still allows you to effectively manage your inventory and essential functions). Fact is, there's just too many different controls to learn.

According to that trailer I saw somewhere (Warcraft 2? C&C?), Descent 3's main selling point was that there was "light at the end of the tunnel", owing to the improved video engine handling larger maps than plain corridors.
I'd be more inclined to Metal Slug 5 than 4, as the former was all kinds of wrong. Worst in series. I saw on the game's wiki that fans actually began to like 4 after 5 came out.

Yeah, MS4 seems to be a return to the series' roots (before all the crazy alien invasion stuff), but MS5 is completely out there with a whole different style for the sound track, and (my least favorite part) the slide move. I can't jump and aim down as easily as I could before, and that bugs me.

Yeah, the new Metal Slugs are shite and with MS 3D on the horizon, I think the franchise has dug it's own grave. As for Unreal 2, I'm one of the three persons out there that actualy like it. Sure, it's not as good as the first one, annd totally different in atmosphere, but it has it's awesome moments. And joe, the Decent 3 trailer's on Baldur's Gate, I remeber 'cause it was totally anoying to have to ctrl-alt-delate it every time you installed it. (Kewl announcer tough "Crush your enemies, set them on fire, and watch them.... suffer!")

Yeah, I remember now, I used to watch that trailer a few times after that. I never really got into the Descent series, maybe I'm just being a neophobe or something.

The only knock against MS6 I can think of is that there doesn't appear to be any multiple routes. Music also isn't as good as 5, although it's still decent. Otherwise, yeah, MS6 is quite awesome. Got some totally badass boss fights. The different character abilities are a great idea too.
