I think people should be much more upset that they made a skill-based game that gradually gets easier and renders your earlier scores obsolete! You know how earlier I was saying that I hated having to unlock (what usually end up becoming essential*) abilities, moves, and weapons in games? This is why. More games need to have more things unlocked from the get-go. I don't really give a fuck how much you like Metroid and Mega Man, developers. This is one time where you do not need to copy them. *Well, they're not always essential, but if they're not then they're usually not worth bothing to unlock to in the first place.

Given that they're selling a bonus mode from a game as a stand-alone entity, they had to do something to artificially inflate the replay value and make it look like they weren't just taking money from your pockets. Good thing that what they did was just make it worse!

I dunno, usually games like this have more replay value than story-based games if only because of that desire to get better high scores or nicer ranks. I just hate padding it out with bullshit unlocking. That's the sort of thing I miss about the arcade paradigm (in addition to cutscene/gameplay ratios that weigh much more heavily on the side of gameplay)
It's going for $40 most places from what I can see, which isn't horrible from what I understand about the amount of content in the game. But I'd definitely prefer to pay $30 and have that shit unlocked in the first place, so if anything a secondhand purchase for this game seems more like a no-brainer to me now.

I used phrases like "artificially inflating" and "make it worse." I'm definitely in agreement it's a bad idea, I was just pointing out why I assume they did it. From what I understand, all of the maps and characters are from other games, too. It's just a lazy piece of shit for people who loved that game mode, and selling it is only going to further descend Capcom into doing shit like this.

I've always interpreted it as more like incentivising people who suck at games in general (me, for instance) to keep playing anyway by making the game easier in exchange for time sank. Not knowing fully how the perks system in mercenaries works, I can't say for sure, but it's been the net effect in other games with perks systems. Whether or not it's a good thing depends on the person.
Honestly, the price of games more than anything else is hurting the 3DS for me. About the only game I can find new that isn't $40 is Bust-a-Move Universe, which I wouldn't buy even if I liked Bust-a-Move.
I see a lot of games on the shelves that I'd like to try, but none that I'd pay $40 for, nor any that I could, in good faith, recommend others pay $40 for, even if I like the game.

If they keep this feature for Mercs, whatever. But if I can't do my knife-only run in Revelations, someone's gonna die.
EDIT: Realized my typo, which also made me suddenly want a new Mercs or Commando from Capcom. (Commando 3 doesn't count at all.)

I picked this game up yesterday, and I'm really enjoying it. I guess this would have been a bigger problem if the game was a proper, adventure-based Res Ev, but for this game it pretty much just means that high scores and unlocks stay in place. It's definitely a game I would want to keep in my rapidly growing 3DS collection.
The system hasn't been out for half a year yet, but it's already trying very hard to become my favourite Nintendo machine ever.

I've actually bought DS games that were "new" only to discover saved data on the cart.
This happened to me with Elite Beat Agents. I bought my copy from an EB Games as a new copy (no stickers marking it as a used copy and the box was in the new games section).
When I got it home, I was surprised to discover a bunch of stages in the starter difficulty unlocked and after one or 2 songs, realised it was actually a used copy.
Now I was able to fully reset the game removing all saves and scores so I could play fresh. But if I had purchased mercaneries instead, i'd have either had to put up with a ha;lf played game (I suspect mine was played by staff or the idiot gave me a used copy by mistake) or take it back to the shop. and that's not right, IMHO.

Gamestop's policy is basically the game is new until they've made a profit off of it, regardless of how many people have used it. If you play a new game and return it for a refund, they will always resell it as new.

This and the stickers on their used products are the main reasons I never shop at Gamestop anymore. It's fucking insane that they can sell used goods as brand new, with no warning whatsoever to the customer.
