Lock him in a closet with a copy of X-Com: UFO Defense.

playing games is...playing games? This. I think this might be the worst thread we've ever had here. If your boss likes dudebro games, that's really not your problem. You can try to expand his horizons if it concerns you so much. But the world will not end if he just wants to play Gears and Call of Duty. That's all plenty of other people do. Tell him to get a 360 for the better online experience and wash your hands of the matter.

I hate when "casual" is used as a derogative term.Besides,we should all remember that the whole distinction between "hardcore" and "casual" was born for marketing reasons. Games such as Plant Vs. Zombies are quality stuff regardless of their target audience.
It's just like music, where you can have great pop music as well as crappy rock bands.

Lock him in a closet with a copy of X-Com: UFO Defense. The aforementioned title can also be safely swapped for Civilization 2, Wing Commander: Privateer, System Shock, Doom (any of them except 3), Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries, or nearly any Shin Megami Tensei game.

Tell him that you're fucking finished with him, professionally. Seems to work in other cases.

I think this might be the worst thread we've ever had here. Wow, I thought this was Hardcore Gaming 101, a way to learn about and participate in Hardcore Gaming, as well as getting other people into it, not the Casual Gamer Circus.

I think the problem here is that you assume that as a site called Hardcore Gaming 101, we look down on "casual" gamers by default.

Wow, I thought this was Hardcore Gaming 101, a way to learn about and participate in Hardcore Gaming, as well as getting other people into it, not the Casual Gamer Circus. Kurt himself has said that the name of the site is supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. Guess that isn't exactly mentioned on the front page, though.

I took have this thread to be tongue-n-cheek as well. That being said I like sac's response the best.

I was more irritated by some people's responses than the initial concept of the thread when I said it was the worst. But after thinking about it, the initial proposition irritates me as well.
There's nothing wrong with being a "casual" gamer. In fact, your boss does not even seem to fit the generally accepted definition of the term. I generally associate "casuals" more with Wii shovelware and iphone games, rather than Call of Duty. But be that as it may, we're all just people playing games. I may or may not question people like your boss's taste. I might even give them a hard time for not branching out and trying new things. But there's no reason to deride him for enjoying playing games he thinks are fun - whatever those might be.
And honestly, he could do far far worse than Gears or Call of Duty.

Yeah, it kind of pisses me off when other so-called "hardcore" gamers give me a hard time over playing Modern Warfare or hell, any military-themed shooter. I guess you're not allowed to enjoy Call of Duty AND Deadly Premonition and still be considered hardcore.

I just kind of assumed the thread was an elaborate joke that I wasn't in on.
