When are the rest of these RETARDS going to understand that being hardcore requires you to play games from a select list of elite titles. Right here. *reaches meaty hand into back pocket and withdraws a handwritten list of games on lined paper*

I should weigh in on this subject: Bejeweled kicks ass. I legitimately enjoy Solitaire on my DS. One of my favorite puzzle games on any system ended up being turned into the hacking minigame in Bioshock.
Honestly, I think "casual" should be abolished from the gaming lexicon. It's not how much time you spend playing games, or even which games you play - it's the way you enjoy them. We are "hardcore" gamers because we enjoy not just playing games, but also talking about them, learning more about them, documenting our experiences and knowledge in articles that other people can learn from. We're the scholars of gaming. We're the people who exist to tell the less-knowledgeable gamers what they've been missing.

*in order of historical importance* My English teacher told my class to write a report on an epic piece of literature. Most of the class picked one of the works of Homer, some picked Dante, and a few poor unfortunates picked Milton. Meanwhile, one bastard picked George R.R Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. Meanwhile, I picked Final Fantasy 7, the greatest tale of love and loss in all of history. I was the only person to recieve full marks.

So you're the only person who ever faced a no-win scenario and won.

Are "casual games" casual because they lack depth? Like Ms. Pac-Man or Warlords?
Or are they casual because they can be played in short bursts of time, like Warioware or Quarth?
Or are said games simply "casual" because they're popular, or liked by the wrong kind of person? Help me out here.

"Casual" is one of those words I don't often use because it feels too much like something a cubicle worker uses in a desperate attempt to be entertaining. "Casually" is alright since it's an adverb.
I think a more appropriate term is "occasional gamer" or just plain normal. There are plenty of people who've played at least one video game in their lives, but don't take it up as a hobby. My dad used to like Doom, Quake, and Unreal Tournament, but doesn't play games anymore because of various excuses. Hell, he didn't want me to have a game console for the longest time because "computers are so much better and versatile". He's still in denial of the fact that console games rarely freeze and PC games freeze all the time.
