The MGS2 design doc is some pretty fascinating stuff, but disappointingly, nowhere is it explained why they decided to name it Metal Gear Solid III instead of 2 - just some comment about how "it'll become obvious later." Hrm. =P

Thanks for the link johnny, it was an interesting read.
It's interesting how much that game changed, especially if you include what was mentioned about the scrapped original idea for MGS2 on "The Document of Metal Gear Solid." They had some cel-shading test renders of Snake in a more traditional military outfit than the sneaking suit, and mentioned about the game taking place in South America.

Hrm. =P Let's conjecture: -Like Leisure Suit Larry 4, Metal Gear Solid 2 contained events that technically existed within the series canon, but the main characters have amnesia or have forgotten them. -Like Radiant Silvergun, the games would be numbered in chronological order - so MGS3 would be followed by MGS2, which in the timeline would be between 1 and 3. -It would be a trick and you were secretly playing MGS2 the entire time!-Hilarious typo that someone ran with -Kojima and crew talking out of their asses and not having any real idea anyway

-Kojima and crew talking out of their asses and not having any real idea anyway Ah, the George Lucas school of design. They had it ALL planned from the beginning.

No kidding. That's exactly how he seems to do things.

At least Kojima's honest about the fact that he made up the storyline along way whenever he was asked about it. He doesn't go around telling how there was a master plan for the entire series like Lucas did when the Star Wars prequels were being made.
The common speculation about the MGS III title is that the Plant chapter was considered "Part 3", while the Tanker chapter was "Part 2". It doesn't make that much sense when you consider the fact that it was the working title was for the whole game, not just the Plant chapter.
