Extended versions of songs don't qualify, right? I've seen a few people nominate Silver Will (The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC), then list the extended version that isn't used in-game. Their vote will technically be tallied for the in-game version, regardless of which one they cite or link to. There are other instances where I'm combining votes, mostly when it comes to arrangements. For example, lots of people are voting for the original FFV version of Battle on the Bridge, but at least one or two listed the FFXII version. I'm counting these as the same vote, since the latter is an arrangement of the former. However, when the time comes to link the full playlist and/or distribute MP3s, both versions will be featured. Same with Street Fighter II or Castlevania or any other series where songs are reused - a vote for Guile's Theme will be the same regardless of whether it's the SFII or Super SF II version. Same with Bloody Tears in Castlevania, etc. What I haven't decided is for songs that are rearranged in the games themselves. For example, someone voted on Burn My Dead, the intro song from Persona 3. Another one voted for Burn My Dread - Final Battle, an arranged version of the same song for the end of the game. I've been thinking about handlingly this similarly - tally this as the same vote and link both versions. Ditto with Sonic the Hedgehog 3/Knuckles too. There are specific votes for "Act 1" or "Act 2", though they're essentially just different arrangements of the same song.

I think it makes sense to lump the Sonic 3 & Knuckles music by zone, but it's a slippery slope: Should you also group together the present, future, and (in the case of the Japanese/European versions) past versions of Sonic CD music? Would you group different songs with the same motif like the Final Fantasy VI overworld theme and Terra's theme that plays whenever she is being angsty?

I did one more edit for my list. I added the Neo Geo boot screen music as well, it is just so freakin' iconic (hope it is allowed.)

Yeah, it'd probably have to be on a case-by-case judgment call sort of basis. The FFVI songs you're referring to have the same central melody and one is definitely the arrangement of the other, but I'm not sure they'd be close enough to judge as the same song. Even Sonic 3 gets sketchy, as the above posted provided. Some Act 2 versions are pretty similar, but others aren't.

Whew, I think I've got 100 safe and sound. That was tough! I went through my playlist and amazingly was only one short when I finished (although I instituted a 2 song only policy on all but Persona 4, because I felt bad removing Reach Out for the Truth). I did use Magical Girl from Jet Grind Radio, which is a licensed song - should I remove it? It just feels so...Jet Grind Radio that I personally can overlook it, but I'm not sure if I really should.

I think a game like Jet Set Radio should be an exception. It's not like that music was available in America, so it was as legitimate as any other OST.

Quick question: what's the consensus on picking songs from game mods? I happened to pick a song from a Source engine mod that went indie, namely E.Y.E's New Eden Theme, and I'm curious if this is okay.

There is one upload with correct track names for SML. Stage 1 is called Birabuto Kingdom. I guess people interpret it as an overworld since the music changes when you go down a pipe. Hmm, I see... thanks a lot! I'll go and change that now.

Do expansions count as separate games for the 3-song rule? For example, would each WoW expansion pack count as a separate entity for music purposes?

I'm not so sure. Mods open up too many possibilities, in my opinion.

As long as the songs picked are specifically from the expansion (and not a way to get around the 3-song rule by picking a song from the original game but voting for the expansion), then it's fine. Music from mods are OK too, as long as they aren't licensed. They must have been made for the mod in question, or at least appeared in it first.
