Hahahaha, the fact that the drawn map's still not too far off in spirit from the original is what makes it, for me at least.

There's something I don't quite understand...when I originally wrote the Wonder Boy article, there was only a Japanese version of the arcade Monster Land game. But there's a bootleg where the game is in English? Where did this come from? Who made it? No idea, but they definitely weren't fluent in English... I know bootleg coin-ops were prevalent back in the day, but I thought most of them were hacks of popular games.

I can see monster land being really popular among the druaga crowd; in some ways it reminds me a little of druaga in 2D. Partly because there are all these weird secrets everywhere.

Yeah, they're definitely masochistic in the same kind of way, haha. Now that I think about it, my fondness for Druaga is pretty similar to my fondness for Monster Land, even if both make me hate myself.

One thing Monster Land has up on Druaga (also a favorite of mine) is that there's logic to the hidden stuff for the most part; you'll get clues from the bartenders or other characters tipping you off about a hidden room or a character - although you might not be able to see them, you're at least told they're in a certain place. The game clues you in early on that there are hidden doors, and pretty much tells you where they are; later hidden doors are located in similar places to ones that you've come across, so it's less of a shot in the dark.
On the other hand, Monster Land doesn't have Ki, who is totally MOE.

I'd say Wonder Boy ML/DT are designed to be single player completable Druaga's. You can do it on your own - unlike Druaga which has some of the most cryptic puzzles ever.

I really wish this would have turned out better. But damnit, the term "CP" in this game is burning a hole in my head and I need to exorcise it....

Beef, Chicken, or Sarad?

One of the Monster Land bootlegs emulated by MAME is credited to Galaxy Electronics on the MAME database. I don't know if this helps, but the Mark III version of Monster World has a different English translation from the overseas releases (the game switches languages depending on the hardware). Here's a WB3 remake/mod for PC which I think deserves a mention: www.classic-retro-games.com/Wonderboy-III-The-Dragons-Trap_337.htmlA tough game even for veterans of the original, it features a secret ice world to explore, new boss patterns and clever level designs in a much bigger game world. The CP system is replaced and now the stones are used to unlock hidden goodies and an additional final boss. Only problem is I don't think it works in windows vista or 7, at least not without some PC knowledge. These are great btw!

Muteki's way too modest for his own good. His music's awesome!

Gahyuk! Ah'm gowna het thus draygony thang! (In his nice shiny high heel booties.) Amazingly enough, the bartender looks almost traced, and the snake is pretty close.

WHAT IS THIS?! It would have been cool if Sega had included that on the XBLA Monster World collection as one of the backgrounds, just for the lulz.
