I don't exactly remember which one (it was just one stage after looking it up), but the Medusa (the Round 8 boss in the SMS version) wasn't in the arcade version. Yeah, this whole level seems exclusive to the SMS version: www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=kCZKHiCTeoI#t=182sThere's that hidden wizard also. Only really interesting thing about it is the fact that it's a ghost town. Also, I think the levels are slightly out of order.

Well, just got the VC Arcade version and I'm off to trying it out!
Also got Monster World IV while I was at it.

I edited my previous post without realizing that you've already replied. Either way, I'm pretty sure Round 8 is the only extra stage in the SMS version, which affects the numbering of the subsequent stages. I still prefer the Master System version though, the larger playing field gives you a lot more space to maneuver.

Tried out the VCA version of Monster Land last night and the translation's kinda Engrishy, so I don't know if it was a bad retranslation or if Sega lied and used the translation of the English bootleg version.
Maybe they're saving the translation for the XBLA compilation?

The stream is going to be starting in roughly 4 hours, but here's an early link to my livestream channel. The first co-host will be muteKi, but the second host is still to be decided upon, so that should make for a nice surprise! Edit:Just to reiterate, the stream will go live at 9PM EST!

Woo! Snarboo's master run gave me the inspiration to try again, and made it to the annoying "alternating platforms" part in Level 12. Getting the upgraded shields and buying/using magic really helped (two things I'd skipped before). My problem is that I'd lost the elixir, and ended up running out of time/life because of screw ups. I'll get it next time... BTW, I got an elixir from one of the octopi (right after the catfish), but it fell in a divot and I couldn't get it! Argh! Some Wonder Boy Fan ArtEnjoy, Tom Tom from Wonder Boy Arcade, basically the only Wonder Boy fan art that was easy to find. Tom Tom of Finland... There's a bit of fanart on Pixiv, and surprisingly it's not pornographic...go figure.

There's a bit of fanart on Pixiv, and surprisingly it's not pornographic...go figure. I did find one rather cheesecake art of Asha from Monster World IV. In fact, most of the fanart are about Asha than any other character from the rest of the series. Still, there's a bit more fanart for the series than I expected, since I always assumed the Hudson Soft remakes were more popular (I guess that was only true for the original Wonder Boy).

<---
It's not that surprising that she gets the most fan art since she's easily got the most 'personality' out of any of the Wonder Boy protagonists. Although to my knowledge none of them speak.

Yes, Arsha and Pepe are all kinds of amazing. :)
...Having just done a Google image search with the filter off, there is some pretty unsavory art of Arsha out there, haha. Depends on whether you search "Asha" or "Arsha", though. I'm an "Arsha" fan myself; "Asha" has just never sounded right to me. I'll have to see what Sega officially went with on Virtual Console.

The Virtual Console release has her name as Asha, both on the Operations Guide and the game itself. I presume that's how the PSN/XBLA version's gonna call her then.

I think it's supposed to be pronounced "Ah-sha." How did they translate Peperogu?

For those of you that missed the nearly 4 hour long(!!) stream, you can now watch it on my livestream channel. On display are five Wonder Boy games: Monster Land, Dragon's Trap, the original Wonder Boy, Monster Lair, and Monster World IV; with Bio-Hazard Battle as a random pick to finish the stream off. We went off the rails at about the halfway point, so expect to hear us talking about depressing childhood books, video cards, Adventure Time, and anything else we thought of during the stream. I want to thank all of my co-hosts and everyone who watched this live! This wouldn't have been anywhere near as fun without you guys. Would anyone be interested in a highlight reel? I'm thinking it would consist of my Monster Land run with some random clips from the other games I played at the end.

The official translation uses "Pepelogoo".
Also, "Asha" reminds me too much of a certain one-armed Komato Assassin...except Monster World IV was released long before Iji (in Japan, anyway).
For some reason, I wound up starting on Monster World IV instead of the earlier games like I should have...still haven't decided which version of Wonder Boy in Monster Land I'm going to play yet, though I'm pretty set on TG16 Dragon's Curse. By contrast, I'll probably go with Wonder Boy in Monster World (Genesis) for the next game, as opposed to the TGCD's Dynastic Hero.
