Is this topic even worth saving? It began as a reactionary link to an article focused entirely on rumors and hasn't gotten much better. There's an actual discussion going on, so I don't see any reason to just close it. Rather than even read my last large post (I strongly doubt you saw it the second it was posted, read the entire thing in 4 minutes and then typed your response after having done so), you immediately made some sarcastic and reactionary remark about every thread devolving into some sort of drama. My arguments may be heated, and calling Pooshhmao a retard was completely unnecessary, but there is a very real and detailed debate going on beyond a little slurring getting in the way. The argument is only lightly ad hominem (with the amount of it reducing) and certainly not to the point where it's worth closing the thread.

Halo was the Goldeneye of 2001. It was nothing special compared to the PC FPS' at the time, but it was a major stepping stone for console FPS' actually being taken seriously. I only had a PS2 and a PC that was by no means a gaming rig at the time I got my Xbox, so it did right by me. The multiplayer, at least, was definitely something special, especially considering the tremendous tournament scene that has grown from Halo's beginnings (with the vast majority of professional players considering the original to have the best MP). Halo's "medium" pace really set it aside from slower games like Counter-Strike and the Tom Clancy games and faster fragfests like UT and Quake, too.

I'd have to agree on that one. The original Xbox had a few decent exclusives, but not enough to warrant its existence. Halo was an excellent game! And Halo 2, by itself, had tremendous influence over the future of gaming and was wildly successful. While the Xbox was admittedly a bit of a clunky fumbling for Microsoft into the home console market, I'd say it was a very important console and definitely one that I and millions of other gamers spent a significant amount of time with.

Is that not what a forum is for? Yes... that was the joke. ... was it funny? I wasn't sure if it was a joke or if you were suggesting the forum is only good when people are off-topic. Jave, I'm kinda surprised you don't stop by the IRC, it's actually casual in there. I don't go on the forum to make friends, the communication by posting on a bulletin board format is mostly only good for debate and posting or gathering information, for me. I'm rarely "nice and friendly" on here because it's so impersonal I don't see the point.

Only when there's people discussing topics. Is that not what a forum is for? Does every thread in this forum really need to devolve into some kind of drama? Christ. Drama suggests I have some sort of personal history with the guy, this is an argument. The question remains when all these will come out. I vaguely remember the lineup from the first 3DS announcement as sounding rather nifty as well. Definitely a fair point, but the 3DS's launch was widely considered rushed and Nintendo has pretty much admitted that much. Iwata confessed there was a poor software line-up, too. The new Resistance and the new Uncharted, particularly, look as though they're very close to finished, and the Vita launch is still months off. Given the 3DS's incredibly weak launch, I highly doubt Sony would be stupid enough to not take advantage of it with a much stronger one of their own. I doubt all of those games will be available day one, but these two (Uncharted being an incredibly heavy hitter) almost certainly will be, and just those two alone are going to make it widely regarded as a stronger lineup available on the first day.

while everybody else moved on to the term 'twin stick' shooters. Missing the point! The reason I was shocked you were not familiar is because you are being passionately argumentative over next-generation handhelds, so I logically assumed you would have some very, very common familiarity with the current generation of home consoles. Handhelds are generally seeking to improve themselves to be more like them, especially with the advent of more casual gaming done on advanced phones. Twinstick shooters are arcadey, accessible, extremely popular and easy to make and are going through a renaissance on XBLA and PSN - they're a perfect candidate for a downloadable service like the 3DS's, yet they, for obvious reasons, can't be competently played on the 3DS. Your complete lack of understanding as to the importance of just the second analog stick on the Vita leads me to assume you have extremely sparing experience with the current home console generation - which makes you come off as very naive and narrow-minded when talking about new handheld consoles. I really left this kind of vigilant fanboy(girl)ism behind back in high school, I think. It's an ugly thing, and not doing your image any favors. Neither is your verbally agressive attitude. Apparently you didn't, or you wouldn't be defending the 3DS in such a way lol Please, enlighten me as to what I'm being a vigilant fangirl over. There's nothing I'm defending, so accusing me of being a "fangirl" in this case makes someone like yourself, who is being absurdly defensive over a piece of hardware that has performed massively under expectations and been widely considered a disappointment, just a wee bit silly. A fangirl, by the usual definition of the word, would be "aligned" with (a zealous "fan" of) something. I despise both Sony and Nintendo pretty greatly and bought a lot more games for my DS than I did my PSP, so I think you're a bit confused. If you're trying to insist that I'm a Sony fangirl, I have to very seriously question if you have ever read this forum and seen the vitriolic hatred I have had for the PS3's shortcomings and Sony's greedy incompetence. I favor the Vita because it has a strong line-up that is widely agreed upon by critics to be miles ahead of the 3DS's, because it has objectively superior processing power and because it has a greater number of methods for input that are widely agreed to be more intuitive than the 3DS's. It is also going to have Playstation Store and PSN support, compared to the 3DS's poorly organized and poorly supported store, and its incredibly archaic and ass-backwards methods of account management and online play. Needless to say, I'd be in favor of the 3DS if it had a better software line-up like the DS has, despite the shortcomings on all of its features, but it doesn't. Not even close. The Vita is looking to have better critical reception on its launch titles than the entire 3DS library up to the Vita's release. If the Vita picks up momentum before the 3DS, it's very likely to gain more 3rd party support than the 3DS, which would cement its place as the more popular console for the generation. I completely stand by my original perception and think that the 3DS is an awesome piece of gaming equipment. All the interweb hate won't change that for me, because I can not relate to it. I have five games for the system so far (SSF4, DOAD, RR3D, LoZ:OoT, and RE Mercs) and I genuinely would rate them between 'quite good' and 'excellent'. That's five good to great games for four months that it's been available. SF4 and LoZ are old ports, Ridge Racer 3D is mostly old content, RE Mercs is an expanded minigame that is usually known to come with the actual retail game and DoA:D is just one fighting game. If you think this is a great line-up, I have no idea what on Earth you're thinking. I'm very genuinely curious if you even own a Xbox 360 or PS3, or, at this rate, even an N64. as you seem to be thrilled with experiences that have been better on home consoles for quite some time, now. The Vita's launch line-up, on the other hand, is amazing. New Uncharted, new Resistance, new Bioshock, new LittleBigPlanet, new Silent Hill, either a new Call of Duty or a possible port of Modern Warfare 3. These are all hugely popular franchises, and trailers for the new Uncharted show that the Vita is already miles ahead of the 3DS, graphically, and, as Wyrdwad says, has input making the 3DS look like yesterday's lunch, which was a point where many people preferred the DS in the last generation. As countless people here and elsewhere said before - the DS is now regarded as one of the most beloved handhelds in gaming history, but it took a while to gain momentum. Same situation here, except for the fact that there's competition from generic mobile devices now and that's why Nintendo is under a lot of pressure to gain market share before yet another competitor launches their product (Vita). It is entirely conjecture that it is the same situation - if you remember the N64 or the Gamecube, the launch line-ups weren't all that impressive (albeit better than the 3DS's) and both consoles gained relatively little momentum. While they still sold "well enough," they were considerably outsold and critically less well-received than the Playstation and Playstation 2. Nintendo has had firm dominance over the handheld gaming market since the Game Boy's inception, and for the first time in their incredibly illustrious history, are in very serious danger of losing it. The DS and Wii have benefited from tremendous success thanks to their innovative methods of input, and the DS has largely been considered superior to the PSP thanks to its astounding 3rd party game support. With the Vita largely considered to have the upper hand on innovation this time around and a launch with much better 3rd party support, Nintendo is no longer going to have 3rd parties flock to them, it's going to instead have to convince them to make games on the 3DS. Nintendo has a notoriously bad history of working with 3rd parties, as evidenced clearly by the N64 and Gamecube's drastically lesser success when compared to the PS1 and PS2 and the Wii's shockingly small library when it comes to AAA games from 3rd parties. They contracted Capcom late in the Gamecube lifespan for a few games to help boost the Gamecube, and they didn't even manage to retain exclusivity to the biggest of those (Resident Evil 4). There's sufficient history to believe that Nintendo will struggle with gaining 3rd party support for the 3DS, and evidence showing that they have (as they have had in the past) negligently pathetic enthusiasm (damn near apathy) for having people make games for them (poor and slow devkit distribution, no effort in seeking out third parties). Expecting the 3DS to gain similar momentum to the DS is ridiculous considering that it's lacking the qualities that made the DS so popular, such as 3rd party support, being considered more innovative and accessible and gaining momentum before the PSP did. Liking one system does not exclude the possibility for me to like the competitor as well, as seems to be the case with you. How on Earth does this seem to be the case with me? Your assumption that I'm predisposed to disliking the 3DS is completely asinine, and the fact I bought one at $250 should be proof enough of the contrary. This may blow your mind, but a whole lot of people are pissed off that the 3DS has been immensely disappointing, not the least of them Nintendo, themselves. My opinion is hardly unusual, unreasonable or uncommon. Your stalwart defense is all of those things. Seriously, the CEO cut his paycheck in half, it's sold under expectations, it's been critically torn apart in its reception to the point where Nintendo has apologized for its poor line-up and the price has been significantly slashed by record percentage in record time. So we conclude, as you say yourself, that this thread entirely reactionary to mine and I'm sure you would derive some degree of personal satisfaction to see the amount of posts in here surpass my thread. That's alright. I still call this second analogue stick rumor bollocks. The thread title was entirely reactionary, nothing more than that, you're flattering yourself if you think you've caused me to dislike the 3DS any more than I do. If you hadn't created your thread, I would have likely titled this one "What the fuck 3DS," instead. And I'm so confident in this I'm even willing to make a bet with you. If, within a year, there's no trace of an add-on analogue stick for the 3DS (first party, mind), you do something to embarass yourself right here on this board. Otherwise, I will embarass myself equally. Do we have a deal? I have never once said it's certain, only that it's worth considering. Other than not being able to properly spell embarrass, you've already done a fine job of embarrassing yourself with your argument.

TheChosen, you really need to separate hardware and software in this case. Old consoles hardly had important features, so the software (the games) made the argument as to which was "better." Now with constant multiports, digital distribution and online gaming, things have severely changed and the hardware is more important than ever.
A console can still be bad hardware with or without good software. Despite the DS's excellent library of games, I'd argue that, compared to its competitor at the time, it was a bad console. Taking its library into account, I consider it the better to own of the two, but there are extremely few of my favorite DS games I don't think would have been better on the PSP.

As much as I hate the Wii, the controller wasn't the problem, it was the lack of games that used it to any creative or entertaining capacity. There were still glimmers of brilliance and excellent control in games like Zack & Wiki, No More Heroes and RE4 (which turned out to be the best version). The brunt of my hatred for the Wii is that stemming from incredible disappointment.
That said, yeah, if Gunpei Yokoi weren't dead and were still with Nintendo I think they'd still possibly be as good as they were back in the SNES days.

The Vita has a touch screen, too, genius. How is this even relevant to the thread? It seems to me you're just a petty hater. Look at the thread title. You could've written 'extra analogue stick announced for the 3DS' or something similar, but instead you go for 'the 3DS is a piece of shit'. Sure sets the tone for any hateful follow-up arguments you're bound to come up with. Oh my god, do I seriously have to point it out? Are you this blatantly dense? The Vita also has two analog sticks. Do you want to know why? Because FPS and TPS do not work on handheld nearly as well without them, and neither do other genres. How many DS games have comfortable camera adjustment with the touch screen? Almost none compared to how many home console games do with two analog sticks. The touch screen is proven to absolutely not be an alternative to a second analog stick by extremely popular opinion. Why would it need a second analog stick? BECAUSE LOTS OF GAMES THESE DAYS USE THEM. Is that a difficult concept to understand or do you seriously have that little experience with today's consoles and that much naivety about the popularity and importance of that second stick? There were many, many PSP games criticized for the lack of a second analog stick, and the 4 button method never quite worked as a proper alternative. Watch the trailers for when they first showed off the PSVita Resistance or Uncharted games - both of them use fluent control with both sticks, and then use the touch screen for extra bonus methods. Almost no one wants to control an FPS or TPS with the touch screen. The 3DS would logically want to have what its competitor has so that it isn't washed away by them. The Vita is setting up right now to establish some serious market dominance and Nintendo is scrambling to pick up pace so that they're not going to get slaughtered. I phrased the thread title as "The 3DS is a piece of shit" directly in contrast to your "The 3DS is awesome" thread, because it's been incredibly disappointing, thus far, and has been a huge setback for Nintendo. When even the company that published the device is apologizing for its ridiculous pricing and lack of support, then you might want to rethink your values. Your near wanderlust with what is widely considered an overpriced disappointment, lack of understanding of what a twinstick shooter even is and failure to understand the importance of a second analog stick have me wondering if you even own a home console from the current generation. Hardly anyone gives a fraction of a rat's ass about the gimmicky 3D of the 3DS, and the whole "dual screen" fad has died down immensely. Nintendo realized immediately they could not compete with Sony by keeping the 3DS at the same price with their inferior hardware and are scrambling badly to try and prepare for the launch of the Vita - which is increasingly anticipated and does more of what gamers today want. The Wii and the DS were successful because they were perceived as innovative, fresh and accessible, the 3DS has failed to be perceived as such with its new gimmick and is drastically inferior in terms of screen size, hardware, online interface and so on. The Vita is setting up to be more advanced, more accessible, more innovative and with more support. Nintendo is in deep shit, and if you can't even understand the importance of a second analog stick then I seriously think you're beyond explaining this situation to. For clarification, a "twinstick shooter" means things like Geometry Wars, Super Stardust HD, Robotron, etc. Not an FPS or TPS that uses two analog sticks. It's an extremely common term in gaming today and it seriously shocks me you weren't familiar with it.

I say BOLLOCKS. I'm beyond the point of defending the 3DS unconditionally since my PSP is getting more attention lately, but that's because I'm waiting for stuff to show up. The system does not need a second analogue stick. What for? FPS's? And where would this 'accessory' connect to? You wouldn't even be able to properly close the thing. It's from a 'source' from some French website. Okay. I hereby launch the rumor that the PS Vita has overheating problems and will melt in your hands if you play it for more than two hours straight. I GOT THIS INFORMATION FROM A REPUTABLE SOURCE. Pooshhmao, can you stop being a retard for one second when someone criticizes the 3DS and actually read the article? The source has been reputable on several big leaks in the past so there's a good chance this information is worth considering as true. Given the fact the 3DS has been performing seriously under expectations (enough for the CEO of Nintendo to cut his paycheck in half), the idea of Nintendo doing something drastic rather than continuing to let it flounder and get devoured by the Vita is far from a ridiculous idea, especially when coming from somewhere that's been right about big leaks before. And why would it need a second analog stick? I don't know if you've been following, you know, the whole video games industry for the last like 10 years, but that's sorta become a thing. It's integral to the overwhelmingly popular TPS and FPS genres and used to great effect in countless others for things like smooth camera adjustment. Twinstick shooters are a genre that would easily flourish on a handheld if they had two sticks, too.

Have you tried using the headset on other controllers and seeing if the sound persists? It could be because of something in the jack on the controller you're using interfering with it.

I feel hating on systems, as a whole, due to lack of games at launch, followed by drought is flawed logic. How about lack of games, cancellation of the only game I bought it for, ridiculous price, underhanded price drops and quick revisions? I mean seriously what in the goddamn fuck.

Oh I agree- they aren't like, the pinnacle of gaming some would try to make you believe. At the same time- uninspired, horrible or even boring? That comes across like someone either not into that style of game at all or more commonly - the modern internet keyboard warrior- quick to make a controvercial statement cause they are just that badass. You know the type: "I was ALWAYS into Megaten gaming and FFVII was always crap!". Yes, of course dear. The very worst thing that a video game can do is fail to stimulate you in any way. A Link to the Past is, and I exaggerate in no way, shape or form, one of the very most boring video games I have ever played in my entire life. "Horrible" just equates to "very unpleasant," which is what I use to describe my experience with a game that failed in nearly every possible way to stimulate me. Before you accuse me of disliking the style, I have enjoyed Link's Awakening, and also enjoyed both Zelda and Zelda II (given I needed a map for the former and a guide for several parts of the latter to consider them fun). I found A Link to the Past to be aimless, void of any difficulty or challenge, void of any sense of accomplishment when making progress and to be utterly dull and awful. Exploring is not rewarding, it is tedious. Combat is not challenging or even engaging, it is dull and repetitive. The new items provide no excitement, they only remind me that they were the reason why I was wandering around. The setting does nothing to interest me, and I have had more exciting plots read to me from children's aisle books before I learned to read - this is especially ridiculous considering that Link's Awakening had some sort of interesting story to it. It has weak atmosphere, hardly anything exciting to discover, completely unengaging combat and exploration and absolutely nothing driving me to get to the end of it other than repeated suggestion that "I just have to play it, then I'll understand why it's so great." I'm admittedly not a big fan of games like these and said earlier in the thread that had I not been pressured to play it by so many people, I would have just dismissed as not being my type of game - but even for its genre, I don't think it does well. Also, for fuck's sake, last time we had some retard turn my last thread like this into a several page long argument about Ikaruga, can we please shut up about Zelda.
