Mao, Sunsoft's Batman is barely EVEN a Batman game. I don't think a single person at Sunsoft saw the movie, and it shows. Like, why is it in the future? Why are there robots everywhere? Why does Batman shoot rockets? Why does the Joker shoot lightning? Seriously, it's pretty much the perfect Batman game for people who don't like Batman. On topic: - Moe characters. No matter the genre, a single one usually kills my interest in a game dead. - I'm also really not fond of any sort of game that tries to shame you, the player. This has been a much more recent thing, but I get really annoyed by any game where you have to do bad things, and the game basically stops you to say "This is bad. The thing you are doing is bad. Stop doing the bad thing. Continue doing the bad thing to win the game." Spec Ops would be the most notable example, although I'm sure there are others, like MGS2. - Bad pixel art. Now, there are plenty of games with good pixel art out there, like Freedom Planet or Retro City Rampage. I just hate it when developers, usually indie, make cheap, blocky sprites and make an art style off of that. Especially if they're trying to be "retro", where it comes off as more insulting, than anything. - All right, this one is complicated: Something about all these games coming out lately that appeal very obviously to the Japanese market... something about them puts me off. These have been coming out for a while, now, usually RPGs, but lately, it seems like there's more and more. I can't give any specific names right now, but a lot of these games are usually very niche, at best, or they feel like they're appealing to somebody's specific fetish. And you know, if that's the kind of games people like, sure, whatever. I just feel like there's so many of them that they're starting to overpower the stuff from Japan that really interests me. Also, these usually tie in with my first point. - Zombie games. All of them, forever. Stop. Stop it.Joestar mentioned this on Twitter the other day, but the original cutscenes for NES Batman were a lot better than the final version. Either way, the soundtrack to the game is an absolute classic. The game definitely does not represent Batman or his world in any meaningful way, but it's still a great ride.

Also on that note, really short hair/shaved head/bald. 47 is an exception here, of course, but it just looks really lazy and boring how everyone seems too afraid to render hair. There are few things more annoying than games that have some kind of character creation but only give you bald/extremely short hairstyles because their artists suck too much to make decent hair options. Mass Effect was particularly annoying about that one. The "Military Regulation" excuse kinda goes out the window when Female Shepard can have longish hair, and it makes even less sense in the sequels when Shepard is no longer officially military, and the third game makes Female Shepard's default hair even longer...

I really hated the custom hair options for male characters in Mass Effect.
I guess some things that turn me off in games include -
- overly-scripted, uninteresting cutscenes like in the Call of Duty series
- main characters (usually male), who are really stupid and impulsive and hotheaded, and who need to be talked down by the other good characters constantly. Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia is the main example that comes to mind, but I feel like I've seen this in other games too.
- When there's a scene that shows a character who's using a sword or other non-gun weapon, and takes out an entire squad of faceless enemies (often enemies with guns, or who are otherwise equipped with more technologically-advanced weaponry) all by themself. Games (and movies too) love to do this when introducing the female love interest, and it's such a cliche.
There might be others, but those are the first that come to mind for me.

Subcultural references are usually done in a way about as elegant as a drunk uncle claiming that he can rap. It just comes across as trying too hard, which it usually is. Gray Matter (which had Jane Jensen, not some nobody writing the script!) was really awkward with the titular character constantly mentioning she's a goth. And I'm not even into goth stuff! It'd probably been all the more tiresome if I knew my way around that subculture.
That being said, unless you REALLY got a knack for this stuff, cultural references in general are a bad idea. Al Lowe and Ron Gilbert knew what they were doing, Lori Cole knew EXACTLY what she was doing, but the guys doing the Les Manley games - not so much.
Also, semi-subtle sexism (meaning, Larry is okay 'cos it's SO over the top, as is Duke Nukem; both are pretty much parodies of the idea of machismo they portray anyway). One modern adventure game that was obviously inspired by Quest for Glory pretty much lost me during the intro, which had the titular character being all macho when he boned a conquest of his and then called a secondary character... did he actually use the word gay? It was something along those lines, like, "you're not a real man". And it's not like he's a Zap Brannigan-like caricature.

- Bald, goatee, dudebro power fantasy -type characters. Yes, Kratos, I’m looking at you. The GOW games are supposedly good ones, but I’ve only played the first because of how unlikeable a character Kratos is. And I like ancient Greece as a setting!
- Second the bad, wannabe retro pixel art. Just because you suck at drawing doesn’t make it ”retro”.
- Overtly caricatured characters, common to i.e. anything aimed at Japanese shōnen age group. Not that I don’t play such games.
Many militaries allow women longer hair than men, though long hair is obviously often impractical. So it kinda makes sense in ME... Though I do afree with the actual point there.

It's very likely that nobody at Sunsoft saw the actual finished movie, just production stills and storyboards. The release needed to coincide with the movie after all. - Zombie games. All of them, forever. Stop. Stop it.Yeah, I'm sick of them myself, but you have to understand that they're very tempting to use by developers. The AI doesn't need to be advanced and it's a lot less controversial to shoot them than living people.

I can't seem to gather an interest for scrolling shooters that involve controling anything other than a fighter plane of some sort. Even if its a mech that looks like its designed for flight its still just bugs me for some reason. If said game involves a levitating psychic kid or something similar this problem get tripled.

One exception: ESP Ra. De. That game does levitating psychic kids right. The thought of having to fight a flying old lady with butterfly wings at the end would normally kill any interest I might have in the game otherwise, but no - she makes for a fascinating villain and the fight itself is total sensory overload.

this is a turn off for me as well, Risk of Rain seems like a perfect example of this, I'm just not fond of these indie 2D revivals in general (I would rather play an actual, ya know, old game) and ones with intentionally crude graphics just seem inexcusable to me I'm also very turned off by all these "new genre" type games that have been coming out in recent years like DOTA 2, League of Legends and Minecraft that all seem to be beloved by 13 year olds, I know that makes me sound like a grumpy old man but still, League of Legends is played by like what, millions and millions of people and yet I barely know anything about it, that sends chills down my spine, I used to be very up to date on what was popular in gaming, how did I get to this point? now I know how the older crowd felt when my generation got into Pokemon and stuff

All you really need to know about the "MOBA" genre is that it's a hugely dumbed-down version of Warcraft III, to the point where it has more in common with Diablo.

You kids and your Pokemons were just baffling to me. I still don't understand the appeal of it.
