Anything FPS has historically been a huge turn off for me, especially when it's about OMG A WAR. So looking at things like Battlefield, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor or Counterstrike or whatever they're called usually leaves me 100% bleh. It's funny how games like these have become synonymous with "gaming" in general and a lot of my gaming friends LIVE for these kinds of games and not much else (give or take the occasional GTA, FIFA or whatever is hyped at the moment.... coughDestiny...) Makes me feel like I'm not a gamer at all cause I'm expected to buy into these generic-looking chart toppers. Oh, and RTS! Omg RTS! I don't understand it. People actually compete in these games on the telly. I can't imagine watching anything more boring. I'm sorry

* I am getting squicked out by games that hardcore male-gazes on animu girls and put them in compromising poses. What really sucks is that 70% of today's JRPGs and Japanese action games do that, the lesser the quality the more overbearing the girl fixation. And yes, I heard 1 million times this 'human nekkidness is ze highest expression of art, look at venus de milo'; I don't care, enough is enough!
* Getting tired of games that puts you in the role of a father protecting his blood or surrogate daughter amidst harsh situations (because of course). I don't know why it always have to be that role, but my theory is it's for dudebro gamers to feel that they have a sensitive side too. Why can't there ever be a game where you're a mother protecting her son?
* MOBAs and their AWFUL community. Watch millions of people have shouting match with each other over click-click-clickety-clicking on games with completely generic fantasy art.

Sci Fi settings and military settings are definitely a turn off to me. Not saying I won't ever like any of those games, just that I'm initially disinterested. This is why I never bothered with any of the CoD etc. games. It's also why it took me WAY too long to play Deus Ex and System Shock 2.

- Bad pixel art. Now, there are plenty of games with good pixel art out there, like Freedom Planet or Retro City Rampage. I just hate it when developers, usually indie, make cheap, blocky sprites and make an art style off of that. Especially if they're trying to be "retro", where it comes off as more insulting, than anything. This shit deserves a separate thread. Here is a recent example I posted at Official Indie and Free Games Thread: www.siliconera.com/2014/09/25/zelda-inspired-blossom-tales-hits-nostalgia-bone-pretty-pixels/Yeap: another dull Zelda-like game with shitty, pseudo-retro square-shaped graphics. If A Link to the Past is their inspiration, then how about making the graphics at the same, top quality? I have fed up with this style of graphics. They're not even retro-style but lazy pixel-art. Learn the difference! Even NES games have more details at the graphics despite the limitations of the hardware since the developers actually put an effort and took advance of the consoles' capalitites. www.racketboy.com/retro/nintendo/nes/best-nes-graphics-soundIf you want your game to be called retro-style, at least make it look like one: Noitu Love 2, Freedom Planet, Shovel Knight and the list goes on. If you want to make retro-style game with blocky graphics, make an Atari-style game like Don't Look Back, one of the best indie games I've ever played and I'm not too fond of Atari games: terrycavanaghgames.com/dontlookback/

In the light of recent events in the community, this one made me laugh. No offense, of course. BTW, A Mother's Inferno (I haven't played it) might be a good title for you to try. Also, I pity the foo' that plays MOBAs on his/her own. I exclusively play with friends, because that way I actually have fun. On topic: anything grim, brown, war related bores me without even trying. The sole mention of Call of Duty makes me cringe.

Why can't there ever be a game where you're a mother protecting her son? That actually sounds like a great idea that would also be appealing to female gamers. The closest thing I can think is Undertale. You're not taking the role of a mother but the main character is under the care of a monster with motherly insticts.

Me, I don’t care about LOL, but that’s because I don’t do multiplayer in general (bar hotseat/LAN with friends).

- Super kiddy games. Like, the kind of stuff that should get an eC rating. I know, I exclusively play what other people consider "kids" games (Mario/Wario/Nintendo, Mega Man, Mascot games), but I think there's a difference between being kid-friendly and talking down to the player. The Klonoa reboot for the Wii almost fell under this category - the disc was too scratched to play, but the start screen you see before the game loads just felt embarrassing. I later got to enjoy the PS1 version, and despite a few design choices, it plays good enough to be forgiven.
- "Dull" games. I'm not talking about super-gory first-person shooters, those are okay because they're so extreme. (Doom for instance.) Rather, the kind of first-person shooter that's incredibly realistic, or at least trying to be. Call of Duty and a lot of artsy indie games qualify.
- "Do-it-yourself" sandbox games. I'm a programmer, sure, but I lose my imagination while playing games, and I don't like to think too hard for solutions. A lot of the time, by making things "easier," they become harder for me to fit together (like redstone circuits.) Stuff like Minecraft, Terraria, and such.

I know that makes me sound like a grumpy old man but still, League of Legends is played by like what, millions and millions of people and yet I barely know anything about it, that sends chills down my spine, I used to be very up to date on what was popular in gaming, how did I get to this point? All you really need to know about the "MOBA" genre is that it's a hugely dumbed-down version of Warcraft III, to the point where it has more in common with Diablo. I've never seen the comparison to Diablo, but yeah my mom asked me what DOTA was once, because her boyfriend's son plays it and I told her it "is Starcraft for idiots rather than an army you get one guy, and die a lot". And for the record because me, my brother, and my dad talked about WoW as Warcraft, wheras Starcraft she actually knows as an RTS. She even played a game with me and my bro, because I don't say it often enough but she can be pretty cool.

Faux-retro pixel games were mentioned already, so I wont go into those. I also dislike when a game is trying to be more than a game, like its main purpose is actually being a art piece or a social message.

RPGs that force you to play a character that you have little to no control over. Not to say that I can't enjoy them, but it definitely makes me less interested. I like to put myself into the game when I play a RPG, and it's really hard to do that when the character I control is nothing like me at all, or just a total douche. (Tales of Abyss comes to mind) I imagine my interest in RPGs in general would lessen significantly were I born female. I like to believe we'll soon be at a point where choosing your gender in a rpg becomes a standard. I know, I exclusively play what other people consider "kids" games (Mario/Wario/Nintendo, Mega Man, Mascot games), but I think there's a difference between being kid-friendly and talking down to the player. It's been annoying the hell outta me for a long time now that there are actually a large number of people who write off anything with Nintendo or anything that isn't filled with blood as a kids game. It's stupid... and a little sad. MOBAs and their AWFUL community. Watch millions of people have shouting match with each other over click-click-clickety-clicking on games with completely generic fantasy art. It's because of said communities that I rarely bother to play MOBAs at all. There are some decent games, but because they're online games, you're forced to deal with these man-children that just ruin the whole experience.

There 3 Things that put me off theme wise. High fantasy, with orks and elves. Moe/cutesy stuff. And realistic shit, prefer my contra over call of duty.

It's always interesting to see what kind of games my wife ends up getting interested in from watching me play. She doesn't like fantasy or sci-fi, and that's basically 99% of all games ever.

The first Disgaea, Katamari Damacy, the original Puzzle Quest, Silent Hill, and MGS3. She'll actually play the first three, but she just likes to watch the stories in the rest. The best part is that she's even better than me at the ones she plays. Had to stop playing Puzzle Quest around her because she'd keep taking the controller away!
