10 years ago today, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was released for the Playstation 2. It told the story of Naked Snake on an infiltration mission in 1964. This game was notable for being the first Metal Gear game to be largely set outdoors, and also had a very cool survival aspect, in which the player had to look for food in order to survive.
This was a solid entry in the series, and in some aspects, definitely a step up from MGS 2. MGS 2 had too many codec conversations as "cutscenes" for me.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is fucking awesome. Someday I'd like to play through the series again; when/if I do, I am most looking forward to MGS3. It was a truly fun game, and also had my favorite story thus far in the Metal Gear series.

Oh my God, it's been an entire decade? wow, I still remember it's release like it was yesterday.
November of 2004 was an infamously shitty time in my life due to my father's brief stint in a mental hospital due to a mental breakdown that was the culmination of what was essentially a midlife crisis, MGS3 provided a lot of fun and relief during all that, I remember it felt like I had been waiting ages for it (only since E3 2003 as a matter of fact, but time moved slower in those days) and it turned out to be everything I hoped it would be (which certainly can't be said for 4).
I think 2 is a misunderstood masterpiece, but Kojima was definitely right to bring things back down to Earth a bit with 3 and deliver a more "crowd pleasing" experience that, being a prequel, didn't have to mess with 2's story (unlike 4).
Sorry to get a little personal there.

I'm still in a dream. MGS3 is the single greatest game of all time, and The Boss is the single greatest character.

I don't want to derail the thread but it's incredible to think that ten years ago we had female characters in games like The Boss and Alyx in Half Life 2 long before the topic of female characters in games became a toxic sludge of controversy and shitstorms, developers could just do it without any fuss. Those were better times for gaming.

True enough, but did you know what Kojima originally had in mind for The Boss's design? The fact that the game came together the way it did is surely the biggest fluke in the history of the industry.

On top of being one of the greatest games released its surprisingly one of Kojima's most cohesively built stories. Definitely my favorite of the series, but also ties into one of my worst gaming memories of the PS2 era. I bought the game on release but I worked a lot at the time so I didn't have too much time to sit and play so I was really looking forward to spending my day off on Thanksgiving playing through it. And then on Wednesday night, while in the middle of the shoot-out with Ocelot, my PS2 crapped out. This was my second PS2 to do that and I wouldn't have the money to replace it for another week.

Still, the greatest ladder in a video game. It may even be my favorite start to a video game. Actually, that middle bit is tops. Oh that last third is plain fantastic. I love the hell out of this game. And X-Pert, me and my buddy are running through these ourselves, and I'm very excited to get back here.

Jason, I'm curious as to what it is. Because all I know is that Kojima had British actress Charlotte Rampling in mind when the character was designed. Though some say there was more of a resemblance to Cate Blanchett, or Tilda Swinton for that matter.

She was originally going to be topless for the entire game and have an elaborate snake tattoo on her breasts. The line "when you see the snake dance the moment of your death is near" was meant to refer to her breasts bouncing around while she runs around stabbing/shooting people on the battlefield.

They say there is a fine line between madness and genius, and his name is Hideo Kojima.

I think I'm about due for another playthrough of this, honestly...but I kinda want to wait until I either get my PS3 back or get a Vita, and snag the HD version instead.

That would be it, yep. The man is positively insane. Honestly, we should have all seen this "Quiet" debacle coming back in 2004.

Yeah, with our luck it would've triggered the neofeminism nightmare a decade early.
