@jasonx The All Stars ports are excellent, and now you would never get a company to remake 4 classic games from top to bottom and release them for the price of a single new game... but yeah, if given a choice, I prefer the NES originals. They really did a good job updating the graphics, but something is off about them imo, especially compared to a game that was designed from the start with the 16 bit pallette in mind (SMW). I feel the same about the original Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest games, incidentally.

I like the originals more too, I hate that the Wii U Yoshi's Island is the GBA version. I wouldn't mind this if they included like the e-Reader extra levels for Mario Advance 4 and stuff but nope.

That's it exactly! Never could quite put my finger on it, but there's just something weird about the updated graphics. Excellent point about getting 4 games for the price of 1, as well.

The sound in Mario All-Stars bugs me more than the graphics. The music sounds shrill, nasal, and out of tune. It really lacks the fullness of the originals. The sound effects reused from Super Mario World seem out of place, too, especially the whiff sound they inexplicably used for flattening goombas.
In general, it's always a little weird when classics get remade because they inevitably give the task to a team that is less talented than the original creators, so you often get "improved" games that feel less polished and cohesive.

I probably prefer the All-Stars versions, yeah, and that's the very rare occasion where I do prefer a remake (or remakes, rather). I really like the 16-bit graphics and music, and being able to save is a big plus. I can leisurely go through and enjoy the entire games, rather than either skipping a bunch or getting worn out from a marathon session.

Hmm, it must be the fact that I started gaming on the SNES generations, so I don't have any idea what the original NES color palette was like, or what the original sounds where like. Now I'm really curious about that.

I think it really just amounts to being an old fart. You prefer what you experienced when you were younger.

I far prefer it over the NES versions. Well that and saving. That's pretty nice. And I just love how SNES looks. Not sure why that system had 2D art that still hasn't been surpassed as far I'm concerned.

The All-Star version of SMB3 was the very first game I ever played in my life. And I think the graphics on that one look better than the NES version, but the NES certainly has a charm about it. For the longest time, actually I didn't know which game it was I played when I was so young. But when I became interested in older games when I was around 11-12 or something, I came across All-stars and the memories came back somehow. So yeah, pretty strong nostalgia for me. I also played the shit out of the GBA port, which has the SNES graphics, so it's really the version I'm used to.
But SMB1 and SMB2(J) I think look kinda weird on SNES. But they got a save feature, so they're better anyway.

Maybe I'm an exception, but I did play the heck out of the NES versions long before I got All-Stars and still prefer the latter. So it's not a "this is what I got used to first" kind of situation for me.
I will say that if I want a challenge out of SMB3, I prefer the Famicom original. No matter what your form, you always go back to small/regular Mario after hit. The extra Hammer Suits are fun too.

I just don't like the GBA editions. They added voices to Mario 2's bosses that stood out badly and Mario 3's new content was tucked away by those e-cards. I played both versions of these games so much, only Lost Levels benefit the most considering you can jump into the alphabet worlds faster and can save more.

The All-Stars versions are, IMO, the way enhanced ports ought to be handled. They just improve so much of the originals without messing too much with what made them work. The added backgrounds to SMB1 make the game quite a lot neater to behold.

I do like the All-Star versions a lot actually, I just think the Advance series went too far in the wrong direction with the sound (Link to the Past GBA is the same).
