Look, it's the same for everyobody. So many games, so little time. Even without any kind of obligation, you can't play everything. On the other hand, there are gaming phenomenons, companies and games series the gamers adopt and co-opt as the best of what video games can be, and consider those must-plays. Time and money being finite, you're bound to completely bypass world famous series and companies. No matter what genre of games you play. For instance, I'm gonna out myself and admit I completely bypassed Square. I played Dissidia and Crisis Core, mainly because I love my PSP. But that's all. Left the Metal Gear ship after 2. Never played Uncharted or any of the big Western-developped PS3 series. I only played one Tales Of, and left in the middle at that. The list of Must-Plays I never played is huge.
And you? What companies and "masterpiece" series did you completely bypass? Any reason?

I feel like I'm going to have to hand in my gamer card for this one, but... despite growing up on the NES and SNES, I never played a single Mega Man game until I got Mega Man: Powered Up on my PSP. And even to this day, the only Mega Man games I've played are that one and a stage or two of Mega Man 9, and that's it.
The reason? Because as a kid, I always thought Mega Man looked stupid. I was like, "Robot animals? That's dumb!"
Really, robots in general didn't interest me at the time. When I was really little, I *only* liked medieval fantasy. As soon as you introduced technology or guns, I lost all interest. It took sitting down with my family to watch an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (Time's Arrow part 1, for those who know TNG) before my eyes were opened to the wonders of sci-fi. Until then, aside from a stray title here and there (Strider, for example), I just avoided anything that was too "sci-fi-y." Or even modern-day -- I didn't play any Contra games until the SNES either.
I really do need to catch up on the Mega Mans sometime.

Loved the SNES Mega Man games, never cared for the original NES Mega Mans except for a buggy PC port of one of them (I forget which one but I think it had Bubble Man in it). I also never really played much of the pre-FF7 Final Fantasies except for a bit of FF4 when I rented it out one time. The only Metal Gears I've ever played have been Twin Snakes and the demo for the 3DS version of Metal Gear Solid 3. I own at least some of the Far Cry games but have only played Blood Dragon (unless Crysis counts---I own and have played both 1 and 2). Never played Suidoken, never played Grandia, never played a bunch of the old guard of JRPGs, and never played any non-Symphonia Tales of games. Never played any iteration of Rise of the Triad---although thanks to GOG's latest giveaway this might change soon. Haven't gotten to play the Witcher series for more than 10 minutes at a time, although mainly just due to bad hardware luck than time or preference. Never played a The Sims title. Only played a Castlevania title for the first time within the past 2 months or so (it was the original---got it for free when I transferred my data from my old secondhand Wii to my Wii U ).

I never gave Dragon Quest a chance only because I was a Squaresoft/Final Fantasy loyalist for 20+ years.
I never had any interest in SMT strictly because they looked too anime.

Ou, I was gonna make one of these gamer confession threads here, good call. I always find it interesting how so few people have really played the Mega Man games. As a kid, I only played a little of MM2. It wasn't until I was older did I really fall in love with them. They have aged extremely well, in my opinion. It's to the point if I'm going to play my NES, I'm gonna play Mega Man over Mario.
= = = = =
I have a huge gap in my gaming experiences around the SNES and N64. The Genesis rocked my world, lol. After playing Sonic 1, I literally sold every Nintendo thing I had to get a Genesis and Sonic. Then, the PS1 completely overshadowed the N64. I've gone back and bought/played much of the old libraries, but I have two or three notable gaps which drive gamers insane... I've never played: Mario 64 or Zelda: Ocarina of Time
In fact... I hadn't played any Zeldas for most my life. My friend had Zelda II on NES, and it was hard, so I assumed they were all like it and passed on them all. It wasn't until college that I played Zelda I and LTTP.

Oh yeah, on that note...
Never played MegaTen, never played Persona, never played Baldur's Gate/Planescape/any of the old Black Isle RPGs besides Fallout 1/2.

As much as I've played a bunch of popular games that are out there, there are some things that I've bypassed, unintentionally or not, over the years. Here are some I can think of: Chrono Trigger (the most major oversight for me, by far) Double Dragon series any BioWare game that isn't in the Mass Effect series RTSes in general (I think the only games I've played that could be considered that are Little King's Story and Pikmin 3, and those I only played for a little bit each) any Megaten game (Persona-related or not) Punch-Out!! series Battletoads series most multiplayer/online games, with some exceptions (Contra, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Nidhogg, Duke Nukem 3D, GoldenEye 007, Civilization V, Pokemon) Battlefield series any Gears of War game that isn't the first Skyrim Jak series Ratchet and Clank series any Silent Hill game that isn't Shattered Memories (I will be fixing this soon! I will be starting the Playstation game as soon as I finish Shadowrun on the Super Famicom) any Blizzard game Earthworm Jim series probably lots of others too I feel like I'm going to have to hand in my gamer card for this one, but... despite growing up on the NES and SNES, I never played a single Mega Man game until I got Mega Man: Powered Up on my PSP. And even to this day, the only Mega Man games I've played are that one and a stage or two of Mega Man 9, and that's it. The reason? Because as a kid, I always thought Mega Man looked stupid. I just generally find it more interesting than fantasy.

I never played Pokemon! I don't know if I'll ever play one either. I'm thinking there are things about it I would really like, and I watched a bit of X/Y on youtube and it looked pretty good, I guess. I just don't know when I will come around to actually buying it.
I played maybe 10 minutes of the first (I think) Monster Hunter on PS2, hated it, and never looked back. Though I played the demo of MH3 on 3DS very briefly but I didn't like that either. I know it's a series you must invest time in so I'm sure it's a cool franchise, but I'll never care enough to try it again.
I never played Minecraft either. Or World of Warcraft. Or Diablo (well I did play a bit of the first Diablo when it was brand new but I was probably too young to get it, or something.
Finally, I only played the demo of the first Bioshock. I do own Bioshock 2 but I never touched it.

Oh yeah, I haven't played Pokemon either. And really, I'm not all that interested in doing so, even to this day. Mega Man, yeah, I'll play it eventually for sure... but Pokemon just doesn't interest me. Never liked monster-collecting titles. I need more narrative in my RPGs.

MMO is a genre I've almost completely bypassed, the only one I've ever played is The Secret World back in 2012 and to be honest while I loved the world design I found the actual gameplay pretty damn boring.

-Since I don't own modern systems (I just have way too much stuff for the old ones that is still untouched), I haven't played a ton of "modern" classics (Halo, Skyrim, for example).
-Most (J)RPGs, since I tend to get bored after 20 hours of playtime. I played Final Fantasy V & VII, Lufia 2, a couple of Tales games, Breath Of Fire 3 and the Western spin-off of FF (it was called Mystic Quest Legend in Europe) for JRPGs (I may be forgetting a couple of these, though), and a couple of early PC RPGs, but that's it, basically. (I've played Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, though.)
-Deus Ex. I own part 1, but I haven't played it yet. Yeah, I know.
-I have played Pokémon thanks to my ex GF, but never completed it. It's a JRPG, basically (see above), and it has too much emphasis on luck for my tastes.
-Any Metal Gear game.
-World Of Warcraft. The concept didn't appeal to me to much, and the stigma of acquiring what's basically a form of addiction didn't seem too inviting either.
-Ridge Racer.

a buggy PC port of one of them (I forget which one but I think it had Bubble Man in it). My condolences. I'm assuming you're speaking one of the two infamously bad DOS games. (for some reason they called the second game "Mega Man III", even though there never was a DOS Mega Man II.) Capcom had nothing to do with them except giving them a license. Though at least two of the boss NAMES eventually got used in proper Mega Man games. (what little I played of Rockman & Forte for WonderSwan similarly felt like a cheap cash-in game than a properly-developed MM game)

I'm one of those gamers who often bypasses big genres for whatever I find an obsession for at the time.
For the longest time, I would never touch an RPG because of my brother - instead playing crummy platformers like Bubsy and such. Then I went through a major RPG phase and never touched Bubsy again. After that, I started hating on Sports games - not because of my brother this time, just a general hatred towards things like Madden. Eventually I softened up to baseball games, and especially golf (thanks in no small part to Mario, Hot Shots, and Neo Turf Masters.) Finally, my latest hate was the first-person shooter. It didn't hit me the first few times I played it, but MAN - Doom turned out to be a great game.
My latest "hate" (more of a "meh" on my part rather than pure hatred) is the horror genre. I'd love to see that change...

Being a home computer gamer, console games passed by me for a very long time...... It took me up to like 2009 or 2010 to get into Nintendo games and jrpgs.... I still never played any JRPG newer than final fantasy VII. Or I only played briefly one silent hill game...

I've never played a Silen Hill, Resident Evil or Metal gear. No Metroid, Tales, Uncharted. I've played like one Sonic... in the MegaDrive Collection... for half an hour. Never played an FPS, no matter if Call of Duty or Doom, or Halo - is Halo first person? Well, never played a Halo anyways. Most fighting games outside of early Tekken and Dead or Alive. And no Souls games, only 5 minutes of King's Field until I gave up on that one. So really, From Software alltogether, but they aren't big I suppose, even if hyped to hell and back lately thanks to Souls, so that people even missremember their earlier games as good by proxy. There's probaly a lot more I don't remember right ahead. I don't think I skipped one of the big companies completely though, only individual franchises.
