When I was young, my parents got me a copy of Capcom's Willow, an adaptation of the movie by the same name, which was more than slightly inspired by Lord of the Rings. Early in the movie, there's a monster that appears briefly during the first big conflict scene where the not-hobbit village is being invaded. It's a kind of terrifying cross between a boar and a wolf. The game makes pretty prominent use of this monster in the first areas of the game. Whenever you get into an encounter, the wind starts blowing and the music kicks up, and when you're 5 years old it's enough to be pretty exciting and kind of scary even if you're just fighting slimes. Then the boar thing shows up on one screen and scares the shit out of you because it just charges at you and is so far probably the only enemy in the game that's actually aggressive.

I was a little odd when I was a kid where I'd be laughing at Silent Hill and Resident Evil (though who couldn't laugh at the latter with that voice acting) but the game that scared me out of my mind and gave me nightmares for months was Earthbound and it was all thanks to Threed. Now there is alot of subtle things about Earthbound that one could find unsettling and creepy but at the time I really couldn't pick up on most of them. There was just something really unnerving about the atmosphere of Threed that made me lose it constantly. Strangely the place that scared me the most? That hint guy way off in the corner of the town, who is in a big empty house behind a stand booth with this theme playing (if I remember right): I can't exactly put it into words, but it just flipped me out. It wouldn't be till last year that I would pick that game up again and beat it. 20 years later and this song still makes me feel claustrophobic and then I feel like I have to pee.

[]Thunder sfx []He zooms into the screen at one point []Clown car gets angry []The music and look of the stage in general. SnarbooGenerally those setting are the most disturbing to me. When I was young I had Abadox from my sister's collection. This is where nightmares were made on NES. I think this is one of the last bosses. The entire game was constructed with insides, it would have looked way gross if it was made on later consoles.

I'm going to start this thread off with a bang and say THIS MOTHERFUCKER.I won't lie: That SkiFree image nearly made me cower under my desk. You couldn't have picked a slightly smaller picture to get your point across? =) Any game with stinging, buzzing, flying insects of a bee or hornet-like persuasion automatically gave me the NOPES as a kid. I had a similar experience with the little-known PS2 launch game Eternal Ring. There's a tropical forest-ish area in where you fight swarms of insects that go down in a few hits, but given the minimal attention to detail, this was no problem. However, it doesn't take long to notice the wasp nests from which they spawn hanging in some trees. These nests take a ton of damage, and since anything in the game that reaches zero HP grants experience, I spent nearly 30 seconds hacking away at one, just to reveal the queen wasp which is like twice the nest's size and has a stinger that extends multiple feet out in front of it! I was never a bug person to begin with, but I simply cannot shake that experience from my mind when it comes to any flying bug with a stinger, virtual or real! Still raises the hair on the back of my neck! Sound seemingly haunts me more than anything else. As a kid, I had to play Dragon Warrior on mute because the harsh transition from world map music to random battle made my heart jump. Oh, and thanks to Zombies Ate My Neighbors, I still tense up when hearing a chainsaw in the distance...

I think the real icing on the cake is that the heads-up display just flat-out disappears during this fight. No timer, no backup item, no lives counter. Just you, the boss, and a lot of Mecha-Koopas.

On the subject of Mario, any level in Yoshi's Island that had either:
A) Chomps diving from the background to try and smush you underneath, like toothy cannonballs.
B) Any level where a giant Chomp was chasing you from left to right.
Chomps were kind of a recurring terror in my early gaming years. Dammit Nintendo!

Mario 64 Chomp is probably the most frighting when one of the missions involve freeing him. First time playing the game long time ago was shocking, he is one of the first enemies you meet after the Goombas.

ZenithianHero: I like how due to the timing of that screencapture it looks like Mario is shaking his head in the most "NOPE!" way he can muster.

The Werewolf in Ecstatica. Even today, Ecstatica is pretty creepy! It amuses me that one of the precursors to Resident Evil even beat RE3 to the punch by having an unstoppable monster constantly chasing the player. :p

The Tomb Raider ref sparked a memory; anyone else remember climbing down into that valley under the Great Wall in Tomb Raider 2 for the little gold statue and finding a T-rex for no reason? Also the many, many trap rooms in the original Doom games got me when I was young. I just wanted the blue key, not a lights out imp death sentence

The cinematic for the first zombie in Resident Evil really messed with me. I had nightmares for months because of that game, really the first three RE games, but I loved hanging out with my older brother and watching him play them. Neptune in REmake also scares the hell out of me, but that's because I'm terrified of sharks. I've only beaten the game once, because I always stop right before the Aqua Ring.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors is a good example, even though it's also a pretty funny game with all the B-Movie references. Doesn't help that the final boss assumes the form of a giant monster spider.
Speaking of which, the giant tarantulas in Resident Evil, barring the black widows in CODE: Veronica, because black widows don't scare me as much. I actually think that they're kind of pretty with their shiny black bodies and red accent. XD
If 15 counts as being a kid, then Silent Hill 3, for sure. No other game has ever made me so agape at its horror. If you're a woman playing it, it's designed to push all of your buttons.
