I think everyone's first Sorcerer death occurred moments after opening that door on Level 2... Oh, and one more for the list: The Barrel (5:10-5:32)

Point taken. You could theoretically remove all of the enemies found throughout Maridia and have me wander around listening to the music, and still break me. <me decides to hang out in the glass pipe passageway near the Norfair entrance for a few minutes> ... ... ... I understand completely now.

You could theoretically remove all of the enemies found throughout Maridia and have me wander around listening to the music, and still break me. Given the way the first level of Justin Fisher's Aliens TC for Doom manages to be scary despite having no enemies whatsoever, I'd say that's entirely possible.

Hell, you don't even see the xenomorphs for a while in the 2nd level, either. THEN you go down the elevator and first see the hive, and you'll constantly looking left/right/behind you to make sure no xenomorphs are coming out of somewhere. THEN you spot your first one and panic-fire at it, and the gunfire wakes up the REST of the hive with a loud synchronized HISSSSSSSSS, and your delightfully relaxing vacation on LV-426 begins in earnest.

Something seems wrong with your video link, jorpho. Ahh, the Youtube tag doesn't work properly; it needs the Video tag. Let me try that again. Colecovision Smurfs, fast-forward to 1:30 or 2:22. It's a little reminiscent of the dungeon music in Final Fantasy Adventure, though that loses a bit of its impact after the zillionth time. ETA: Oops, wrong track!

I'm having a difficult time finding what you're picking up on in comparison. I'd ask you to tell me how it sounds, but, uh, I imagine it'd look a lot like my google searches when I need to find the name of some trance/techno song heard earlier in the day.

Oh, and one more for the list: The BarrelThat barrel ruined my childhood. Rented Sonic 3 so many times thinking I could conquer it. Hardest boss ever.

If you are ever in doubt, the song's name is Darude - Sandstorm.

Rampart freaked me out a bit with the scene that showed a losing player set to be decapitated under the guillotine. It cut away before actually showing any violence, but it still perturbed me.

I forgot this. Not sure why it just jumped into my head all of a sudden. I couldn't play video games at night for years. Mind you I was like 6, but watching this video, that music is kind of creepy even now.

I linked to the wrong track and edited my post.

As a kid, I always thought that this track was super scary, especially given the supernatural theme of nightmares just becoming a reality: Link's Awakening was definitely the one Zelda game that was weird in a creepy way. It's difficult to describe. The telephones found ringing in quiet, vacant rooms always made me uncomfortable on some level.
