For someone who enjoys single plane beat-em up's and platform fighters more than belt-scrollers the two first Nes games was something of a pleasant surprise. The combination of platforming with melee fighting really should have been explored more by other games.

Haven't tried it yet, but there's a hack for Return of Double Dragon that seems to make for faster gameplay. Nope, it doesn't restore all the dropped features (interactive / hazardous environment mostly), but I guess it's a start. Get it here.

Return of Double Dragon being unfinished might go down in history as one of the greatest fuck-ups in all of video games. The more I listen to its original score, and the more I read about everything that was planned to be included in the game from the get-go, the deeper my heart sinks.

Why Technos poured money into The Combatribes instead of this game I'll never understand. It probably would not have beaten SOR2 as far as hype goes, but it's so damn fun even in the barebones state it obviously is. A huge shame, but at least we eventually got Double Dragon Advance.

Because The Combatribes is awesome, and nobody wants to make the same game over and over? Actually I'm not sure that scenario holds; The Combatribes was released two years before Return in the arcades, and I haven't seen anything that suggests its SNES conversion somehow sucked up resources that should have gone to Return.

I think I remember Technos being somewhat tight with money during that time, and the SNES/SFC port of the Combatribes was released 12/23/92, Super & Return of DD in October '92. So they definitely shared resources, possibly even staff. Maybe they wanted to get RoDD out earlier for more Christmas sales, or wanted to make Christmas for The Combatribes as well and released RoDD earlier. It doesn't really make sense to release a flagship title in such incomplete status with Christmas still two months away and more resources available. I mean, the SFC version which was released just a couple of days later was noticable more complete, so they were obviously working up until the very end of the deadline.

For all we know, they may have already passed the deadline at that time, and management might have just forced it out regardless of its state. Corporations sometimes do very stupid things. Developing a port is a much simpler task than building a game from the ground up, and Japanese companies often subcontracted part of the work to anonymous companies. Who knows how long SNES Combatribes was in development? Not to mention that it's a very simple game. No scrolling levels, some content cut, etc.

I'd assumed "who knows how long Combatribes had been in development" was to mean that it was already finished earlier anyway and did not distract any staff from RoDD.

I was suggesting it may have been put together in a hurry with the involvement of subcontractors, not necessarily earlier but in a very short timespan. Who knows, though. Any way you look at it, the management at Technos can't have been that business-savy to go bankrupt with such a major hit property as Double Dragon at the time.
