I think it's just to set it somewhat apart from the very different original games, like how the Rebuild movies use different characters so spell Evangelion.

Here's another one, Virtua Fighter.
It's been over a decade since Virtua Fighter 5, it's strange to think of such an acclaimed series being abandoned, especially since all the other big fighters like Street Fighter, Tekken and Soul Calibur are still going, so why not Virtua Fighter? I mean Official Us Playstation Magazine dubbed Virtua Fighter 4 "the greatest fighting game ever made" and yet it had only one more entry in it after such acclaim.

I could go for another dope VF game. Alas, Sega seem content to let it rest.

Well, it was a Final Showdown, wasn't it? But it was probably meant for a 5th entry and not for the whole series. Calling it FS and adding a bunch of clothing or some new animations just sounds meek.

F-Zero for me. I love every console entry (my top favorite being F-Zero X) but i really ask to myself how hard it's to improve on what GX did? Simple, better graphics, online mode, track and course editors, the trophy badges from X and a rockin' soundtrack and BAM! The ultímate entry in the series. I would love to see a new entry someday but i doubt it will ever happen, which sucks

I wouldn't rule out a return for just about any well known Nintendo franchise for the Switch given its success.

We almost got one on the Wii U by Criterion but they were too busy at the time. Your comment made me thought of this video actually!

Samurai Shodown. Seems long dead, like we haven't had any recent addition this decade.

Of course the R-Type series has concluded with Final, even if they made a couple of strategic games afterwards. But I'm still unhappy about it since that techno-organic style was very cool and we don't see that much of that stuff nowadays in 2D games, or am I wrong?
Another one: the Blood franchise was killed by the mediocre Blood II: The Chosen.

Yeah, just yesterday I was looking up SNK fighters and noticed the last Samurai Shodown entry was in 2005. Samurai Shodown: Sen/Edge of Destiny was released in Japan in 2008, and outside of Japan in 2009. But I don't blame you for overlooking that title, it's widely ignored and considered subpar.

Is Katamari Damacy dead as a series?
In hindsight it really was amazing that one of the many weird Japanese games that came out in the PS1/PS2 era actually had breakthrough success into the mainstream, but it was so short lived, I don't remember any of the sequels making the same waves.
However it would be really interesting to see what they could do with the premise with modern tech.
And while we're on the subject, what was up with the mid-00s? Not only was Katamari Damacy a surprise success in the US but so was Phoenix Wright, another weird Japanese game (I mean who would have thought a game about lawyers would be fun and a smash hit?)
What a strange, unique time for gaming it was.

Is Katamari Damacy dead as a series? No, Tap my Katamari was released in 2016 and Amazing Katamari Damacy was released 5th december 2017. A smartphone release is something. Not lik the "The Darkness" series that died after the second game. The ending was a teaser for a third game. -- To be honest, certain games aren't really a dead franchise, because the developers wanted/intended to end the series. Best example: Valkyria Chronicles 3. Some open questions were answered through dlc and they told the story of certain characters like the dude from Valkyria Chronicles 1 with the german name. Although this would be a topic for another thread, I guess. Yours sincerely Jack Caeylin

I think they went a bit overboard with the Katamari sequels for a while, because there's only so much variety you can squeeze out of the core gameplay. They all just kinda blend into each other.
Would definitely love to see it come back though, that series could really benefit from the power of modern systems, open world gameplay and online integration. Some Journey/Souls style asymmetric multiplayer would be great for Katamari.
