I think they went a bit overboard with the Katamari sequels for a while, because there's only so much variety you can squeeze out of the core gameplay. They all just kinda blend into each other. Would definitely love to see it come back though, that series could really benefit from the power of modern systems, open world gameplay and online integration. Some Journey/Souls style asymmetric multiplayer would be great for Katamari. I think it was kinda a victim of timing, I can see why they went ahead and tried to capitalize on its success and get a PS2 sequel out the door before all the next gen consoles were released and drew everyone's attention away. But it was arguably too soon (I myself have never played We <3 Katamari) and by the time they did come out with follow ups on the next gen consoles they had already kinda blown their wad (if you'll pardon the expression) It probably would have been better to have waited and made a "Katamari 2" for the 7th gen consoles. However now would absolutely be the time to bring it back both because the tech would allow you to do something new and Japanese games are back in fashion.
