Out of interest...I'm fairly certain the 3rd game got a PAL/Australian release and I'm fairly sure the romsets agree with me.

Just looked through it... "AX=BATTLER"/"DEATH=ADDER" Can someone explain these names to me please? Sega chose to put a = sign between everyone's first and last name in the original game. Whenever I see a character like the Death Dealer or something like that in my mind I hear someone shouting DEATH! EQUALS! ADDER! The rom sets don't necessarily imply a physical release. I think it might have something along the lines of a brief Sega Channel release like it did in the US, but no physical cartridge was produced.

Pretty much. Plus, the ROM I have is labeled Japanese, but plays in English since the emulator is set to English. It leads me to believe it's one of the few games that has both languages on it, and will switch depending on which region console it detects, like Super Fantasy Zone. EDIT: Am I the only one that thinks Ax Battler gets too damned hard half way through? The battle system requires such perfect timing in hitting enemies it's just ridiculous. How far did you guys get? Double post, but...the game gets too damned hard by the second dungeon. Not necessarily out of level design or anything, but the controls are just so god awful. If they'd tightened those up, and made it like, say, Rastan, it'd really be an excellent game. Also, thanks for the heads up about the Tennis game, I stuck in the pic from the Sega-16 article. I actually bought the game awhile ago with the intenion of unlocking everything to grab pics, but I've barely played it. Last time Vyse was over, we tried playing it and came to the sad conclusion that it wasn't very good.

Romsets don't go by actual retail or official releases. If a game is made for Japan and USA they will label it JU even if it only came out in Japan.
There are several games I've seen labeled as USA/Europe when I know for certain they didn't come out in the USA. Adv. of Lolo for the gameboy is one of those cases.

Thanks, it's just that I react oddly to strange presentations of English text.

Sega's barbarian beat-em-up You could say Barbarian but more accurately it's part of the fantasy sub genre Sword & Sorcery. I think personally believe that Sega was inspired not only by Conan but also the 80s Italian Sword & Sorcery Exploitation movies. Like this www.youtube.com/watch?v=27sXsrI1zH4

Not to be confused with the similarly titled Fred Williamson classic: youtube.com/watch?v=_784gE3Xd00People talk about spaghetti westerns but it's all about spaghetti post apocalyptic movies and spaghettie sword and sorcery flicks for me. Most readers aren't going to know that "sword and sorcery" and "fantasy" aren't the same thing. I think just using the word barbarian invokes the type of setting in most people's minds more readily.

Ok cool You've got quite a taste there! The New Barbarians with Italian trash star George Eastman (and of course the "Boss black person" *that's a movie he was invloved with, not a racial slur* himself Fred Williamson). Yeah I'm also a big fan of Post Apocalyptic type A (that's mad max road warrior style, if you don't know the term) The New Barbarians, Bronx Warriors, Exterminators of the year 3000, 2019 after the fall of New York, Raiders of Atlantis I love em! I'm also a big fan of Spaghetti and Zapata Westerns.

Someone that battles with an Ax and the other adds death The obvious problem of course is he fights with a sword not an ax... I guess he didn't follow his parents' education plan or something. Death adder is a kind of extremely poisonous snake, though, so I guess the guy is named after that.

That aspect of the character always gave me chills as a kid. In many of the ports Death Adder is a huge knight who busts out of that large doorway at the end of the game. In the arcade game though he appears via a large group of snakes slithering into a pile of corpses. The snakes all curl around each other and push Death Adder's armor up above the corpses, which then explode out into the screen, leaving the fully formed Death Adder. If ever there were a person for whom "Death Adder" would be an appropriate name he's the one.

Two additions:
* You CAN kill the skeletons with the final boss in the Genesis version. They just take a bazillion hits. * Golden Axe Warrior did come out in North America, but like Ultima IV, I think it was Canada only. I had to send away for it.
