The word on the street is that the flashes are back, the controls are not-retarded (yay digital pad), and the loads are about the same as the Wii version - which is to say, not a real concern. Also, the unlocking method is a bit different - the interview and sound test is already unlocked, and you open galleries when you beat a game, so no collecting tokens.
So yeah, this sounds like a good deal.

So yeah, this sounds like a good deal. I got it today. Just as you said, the major problems with both of the previous releases are gone. I haven't played either of them so I can't compare load times, but it's about one second when changing characters and maybe 4-5 between stages. The art gallery is divided into eight sections. Beating each of the seven games unlocks one, with the final one opening up after you complete all of them.

HOLY SHIT THEN. And prices at $40... damn, I was originally going to use my EB Games gift card on God of War II, but it seems that there's a new champion in town. ;D

This weekend my friends and I plan to have a Metal Slug drinking game (take a shot with every continue you use).
A sure-fire way to get alcohol poisoning if not for Russian safety rules.

A sure-fire way to get alcohol poisoning if not for Russian safety rules. You might die of overconsumption if you attempt to beat MS6 with Clark. OIGH.

Great article!!! I've always been sort of fond of this series in concept but have a hard time enjoying playing ROMs so haven't been able to put a lot of time into any of them.
So partly thanks to this article I went out and bought the MS Anthology (PS2) earlier today on my break! It's a steal for the price and I'm going to play it a bit as soon as I get home today!

Ok, I got the PS2 port and its a lot of fun and great to have all these games on one disc and all, but what's up with the loading? It has to load midlevel, between levels, when you select a new character, and when you move the cursor over to another character on the select screen! Huh? And yet Garou:MOTW has absolutely no loading whatsoever. Weird.

Did the article highlight the Metal Slug Anthology? I haven't checked it in a while and I'm thinking of buying it for PS2 (its only £15).

Speaking of Metal Slug Anthology, the article part about the PS2 version needs to be edited:
According to that the PS2 version is also lacking hitflashes, which isn't the case. Also, it should be mentioned how fucked up the PS2 manual is, talking about PSP features that doesn't even exist in the PS2 version (save game, display options, saving music/wallpapers to memory stick).

The article doesn't mention this, but the Neo-Geo CD versions of both, Metal Slug and Metal Slug 2, had the Combat School mode, just like every other home version of the game released (besides the Anthology versions of course).
Also, "Missing in Action" (one of the Metal Slug fansites linked on the article) says that there are characters listed in the manual for the PlayStation version that do not appear in the game. This is not quite true.
They're from the "Another Story" mode, which is unlocked after completing all the stages in Arcade Mission. Apparently, "Another Story" is a collection of mini-games according to the manual.

Metal Slug Mobile 3. You play as that enemy with the huge machinegun that always gets killed on every game. Yep, you can try MS3 here: www.xpressed.com/games/Metal-Slug-Mobile-3/60and MS4 here: www.xpressed.com/games/Metal-Slug-Mobile-4/532Why none of the manufacturers decided to add an NGPC like stick to their phone is beyond me. As it is you have to contend with a keypad, which is a shame. Also Leona from KoF is in Metal Slug 4 Mobile. Not sure what that's all about.

Shame those are only on mobiles. SNK should make a collection of them for DS.
