I'm just kind of glad that we have quality ports of 1-3 and 7 playable on Vita (though 1, 2, and 7 [XX] are the PSP versions)
If you're desperate enough, 4-6 can be had through the PSP port of Anthology.
1 and 2 are still the best to me, though. They still have that R-Type feel, coming from Irem vets.

It is a straight emulation, though I'm not sure if it uses MAME's code. At least as far as 6 is concerned I'm sure it doesn't.

I've recently played and completed part 3 for the first time (PS2 version). It's a great game, the branching paths and general craziness are very much welcome, but at least to me, parts 1 & 2 had a more controlled feel to them. However, I was surprised by the amount of slowdown with these two when revisiting them (even X - was the slowdown fixed for any of the ports?)
So I'm not sure which part's my fav of the ones I've even played. But they're all awesome.

I'm actually really torn between Metal Slug 3 and Metal Slug X. While 3 is an excellent denouement to the series, with the insanely long spectacle that is the final mission, and the sheer variety in level gimmicks leading up to it (the zombie level is, weirdly, one of my favorites), X is just a more well-rounded game that doesn't waste your time and keeps things consistent, and avoids the really crazy stuff until towards the end (mummies aside, anyway).
As for why I prefer X over 2, well, 2 is a fine game on its own, but X is the game I feel that it really should have been to begin with, with a few of the worse slowdowns fixed, the bosses placed in more logical places, and the music given just a little kick-up-a-notch.

I prefer 2 to X, mostly because I'm a little annoyed with X making it possible to "WHOA-HOH, BIG!" everywhere.

I like X more BECAUSE it's possible to "WHOA-HOH, BIG!" everywhere. I actually didn't like 3 that much when it first came out. A lot of the Neo Geo community wasn't too happy with it at first either because of stuff taking a long time to kill plus it was seen as a fault that the game has more monsters/aliens than it does military hardware and faux-Nazis as enemies. I approached it again around when it came out on the XBox/PS2 though and it became one of my favorite games of all time along with the original MS. Metal Slug is a great series in general though. Everyone has their favorites in it and while some are clearly a bit worse or better than others in some ways, I think Metal Slug 5 is the only one you could make a case of just being a straight up bad game. People were disappointed in 4 when it came out due to the amount of rehashed military vehicles and assets, but this was actually done in response to the fan favorite criticism of 3 at the time.

I think 3 is fun, but that final stage is waaaaay too long. I mean, the final stage in Metal Slug games are usally pretty damn hard, being arcade games and all, so if 50% of the game is the final stage, then it's a bit overwhelming. It basically makes half of the game ridiculously hard. It's too bad because the previous stages are all awesome and I love the branching paths.
My vote for best MS goes for either 1, or X. It's kind of hard to say why and which is better.
And 4 may be more military because of backlash over all these aliens and stuff, but it's still lazy and uninspired. The reusing of backgrounds makes it look almost like a fan-made game, and some stages seem like a bunch of older MS stuff sewed together. Not to mention the game doesn't really do anything exciting or new. The music is also completely unforgettable.
At least 5 looked different enough, and had some fun stages.
6 I also don't really care much for.

The music is also completely unforgettable. Stage 2's theme from MS4 is one of my favorite songs in the entire series, strangely enough.

You know I really find it odd that Metal Slug Attack, a mere "sequel" to Defense, is considered the official 20th anniversary title of the series and not...oh I don't know something more of higher quality than that. Does SNK have something against the series or do they not have much faith in it these days despite having more money and resources than they had in 2014?

Quick cash-in. You're thinking too hard when the answer is really easy.

Quick cash-in. You're thinking too hard when the answer is really easy. I already know they're nothing more than that (and getting a lot of suckers unfortunately), but it baffles me that despite having to the capability to make games like KOF XIV (in terms of graphics and hardware), SNK continues to neglect its second most well known series, even as the timing is ripe for a real game to come out. It kind of makes me wonder why bother having it around if SNK isn't going to do anything much besides making low-grade crap like those two games?
I know I really sound negative here (and admittedly am), but SNK's missing a really good opportunity to bring some badly needed love to the series. Perhaps the talk of "reviving" the beloved mostly run-n-gun franchise is nothing more than a bluff and nothing more than damage control.

I'm going to guess that Metal Slug 7/XX flopped and that's why they're not bothering with the core series. (Considering it started on the DS of all places, then renamed for some reason and snuck out for the PSP/XBLA, I'm not surprised.) "Beloved" means nothing if it's not profitable.
Metal Slug Defense might suck but it's keeping the brand alive, and mmmaaaaybbbeee they'll use that as leverage to greenlight an actual title someday.

That might be a good clue, though I'll admit I was one of those that got the game when it came out.
As for that leverage thing, given how SNK came out with Attack, I doubt that might happen but hey the events of 2015 surprised us so maybe there might be more surprises by the time 2016 ends...but then again maybe not, who knows? Better to be concerned about SNK than Konami since well Konami burnt its bridges regarding gaming so there's not much to talk about other than how horrible they are (and rightfully so).
