FU'UN-KEN!
God, I love any time SNK Playmore gets around to referencing that.

HUZZAH! The article is officially up, and it looks fan-freaking-tastic! ;D
However, this is an issue that I brought up before, and now I'm starting to wonder if it's an error. It's regarding a special sort of finisher from SSV Special that I've never seen...
Is this a typo? I've finished the opponent off in CO mode normally and using the Issen slash, and I don't get a special win pose or BGM as a result of it. There is a special BGM and win pose whenever a character gets finished off with a Fatality, however... is this merely confusion, or am I missing some really cool alternate fatality-type thingy?

Oh and BTW, in the rasetsumaru's ending, you see a cloaked figure slice his head off. In the xbox version this was censored. His head doesn't get cut off and the body just falls on the floor with the head intact. Why does he say "Dash it all!" Is that that patented engrish?

Excellent article, as always. One of the things that always caught my attention in "Samurai Showdown III" is that the character portraits, quotes, and others are drawn in "sumi-e" (墨絵 don't know how to write it in English) or "sansui" (山水畫 sorry, don't know English either lol) style of calligraphic painting which is very unusual in a video game (even now). If you read the what the characters say when they win it looks like "chao xie" (a kind of calligraphy that is rounder and faster and makes even "kanji" look like hiragana), which is a very difficult skill to acquire (I'm a high-level calligraphy student and my teacher says I'm not ready for it after like 6 years of practicing, so I must suck !). I found it interesting they could pay that kind of artists for the game. Samurai Showdown II had the hint, like in the player select screen background, but it was only developed in Samurai III and RPG, I think, not in SSIV nor V; not even Last Blade series uses it. Also, most of the sound in the latter Samurai games derive or are directly taken from Kabuki, and some music is composed that way and in NeoGeo CD versions even performed by experts in Shakuhachi (again, I played 笛子 for a long time, and I know some of the stuff can only be pulled out by a master), koto, and other traditional instruments. I think these two characteristics, along with some other details like Tachibana Ukyo's haiku at the end of SSIII really make these games some of the most "Japanese" ones out there, truly merging traditional folklore with video gaming, which, if I'm correct, would be an interesting mention. Keep up the great work.

I love Samurai Shodown, especially the first 2, which were by far my favorite games in the arcades... back when this country still had arcades, that is. I was instantly disappointed with the 3rd game though...
The article was great, but yeah I'm still going to complain about a couple of minor things:
In the character introductions you say that Tam Tam is "Not exactly the most effective character."
Hmmmm... You don't grade any of the other characters' effectiveness, so that sentence just seems a bit out of place. Besides as far as I remember Tam Tam has always been at least average, and in 3 or 4 he might have actually been top tier... So this distinction isn't even true.
In 5/Zero you also say that Mina is a particularly good character... If I remember correctly, she was at first thought to be overpowered, but later found out to be one of the worst characters. Expert players might want to discuss this more, though.
The mentioned connection with the Ninja Scroll anime might also be a good idea to include in there; it's pretty obvious there were some of the same team included. The monk (who in the film is actually called Takuan I think, BTW, referring to earlier posts in this thread), looks 100% like Caffeine Nicotine, the main character is called Jubei, the wasp-guy looks hell of a lot like Gen-An, etc...

Please remember! I didn't actually write this, nor did most of the people in the thread - we're just the editors. The writer felt compelled to mention how he felt about certain characters, so I think that's fine.
I don't think Ninja Scroll and Samurai Shodown are technically related, but they obviously draw from the same source of inspiration.

Ah I was using 'you' to refer to the writer (who presumably would read this thread, I hope?), I know you didn't write it.
& yeah it isn't a big deal, but I thought that sentence just looked stupid since none of the other characters had similar grades attached to them.

Nice article. I remember playing and having quite a bit of fun with the earlier Samurai Shodown games (1/2).
On a semi-related note, how would one go about emulating SS 5 / 5 Special? It's supposedly doable on Nebula by fooling around with an unlocker and custom-generated romdata, but I've had little luck with that method.

There are even hacked versions of NeorageX which can run them... Although my virus detector went crazy when I just tried to run one of them ... So they aren't the safest options, but if you have a crap computer you want some good games on, they are there. And yes I know they aren't just virus spreading methods, as I have played both games on NRX and they do work...

I was playing SamSho 2 and, while at Gen-an's stage, Kim from Fatal Fury ran across the background! Has anybody else ever seen this?

Yup, I'm very late, but as a big fan of the wonderfully offbeat GameBoy port of Samurai Shodown, which was one of the best fighting games on the old GameBoy, I have to throw in a little correction: Earthquake actually is in this version. Every single character from the NeoGeo original has made into the GB version (plus the already mentioned hidden characters).

You know you are late to the party when the last one to leave was ZZZ.
And yes, Earthquake is in the Gameboy version. Another correction too: Taizan Morosumi is not exclusive to the 64 version. He's also in the Neo Geo Pocket game.
