How did the author manage to get such good screenshots of the NeoGeo 64 games? I tried in mame and the games barely even function. The characters are flashing and the UI is hardly present at all. It looks nothing like those emulated screenshots so I was wondering how those came about? Is there some other emulator I don't know about?

We definitely used some variation of MAME. I'll have to go through my files to see which version they came from.
Keep in mind that they were still incredibly glitchy and almost unplayable, we were just able to snag enough that looked okay in stills.

Here's a comparison screenshot I made: imgur.com/a/EPIDz As you can see only the 2d backdrop appears and everything else isn't rendered. The characters were barely visible flashing on screen. Compared to a screenshot from the article with the UI, characters, and background all on screen.

So, I don't know if this well-known among fans of the series, but Samurai Shodown's version of Amakusa Shiro is clearly based on how he appears in the 1981 movie Samurai Resurrection aka Makai Tensho. In the movie, Amakusa has sold his soul to the devil and come back to life in order to wreak vengeance on the Tokugawa Shogunate who executed him and his followers. His opponent is none other than Yagyu Jubei, though the game's version doesn't look like the movie's. The article also complains about Amakusa being changed into a woman in the anime; bizarrely, this isn't a first, either. In either Kage no Gundan or Yagyu Clan Conspiracy (both popular '80s samurai / ninja shows), he appears in two episodes as a young girl instead (the real Amakusa Shiro was a 16-or-17-years-old boy at the time of the Shimabara Rebellion).
