Finished as Lilac, and absolutely loved it. I think this might be one of my favorite retro-indies of all time, in fact. That said, I think my one problem might have been the Thermal Base stage. Well, not actually for the level; this is exclusively an Adventure Mode thing: First, and most glaring, is that unlike every other stage in the game, which makes it clear what exactly you're doing there, we just cut to Lilac looking at the place, and suddenly she's fighting through it. We've never seen Lord Brevon using it, we don't know why Lilac thinks it's worth checking out. You just...go there, for no reason, and of course it turns out to be Brevon's stronghold. And when you beat it? You're treated to a surprisingly graphic torture scene for such a bright and colorful game. I'll admit it didn't bother me that much, but it really feels out of place, especially since it ultimately doesn't have any consequences. Well, Lilac and crew just saw Torque get taken away by Brevon's giant green attack ship, so my assumption is that Lilac followed said giant green attack ship to the base. The torture scene (and subsequent magically trivial recovery) is definitely the low point of the game, though. It just feels far too incompatible with the tone of the rest of the game.

If you idle in front of a bathroom, they'll automatically enter it.
Also benches.

Ah, good point. Still, showing the battleship landing there would've been welcome, or even have the establishing shot show the ship parked there. Maybe in a future patch or something... To be honest, I actually mistook the gray, charred skin for robotic parts at first...which actually would've been kinda a cool twist, since there really isn't much other explanation given for what a dragon is doing in modern day. Still, given the nature of the Kingdom Stone, I can't help but feel they'd have better off with the non-violent "life energy sapping" sorta thing. Same result (Lilac too weak to escape on her own or resist being arrested), minus the out of place carnage. Should add I enjoyed the story for what it was, it's just an odd, out of place sticking point for me. On a positive note, anyone else find it awesome how each level is divided into two sections with completely different graphical sets? Hell, I'm floored by just how good the levels look in general.

The music changes its flourish too. This is really what Sonic needed to be doing the last... [unfurls roll of toilet paper with "Shitty Sonic Games" written on it] 19 years??

Yeah, the visual style of the levels is great. My favorite is definitely Fortune Night. Aside from just being a cool theme for a level (Chinese city and mega mall), the amount of extravagant background details is really something else.
One thing I noticed that's neat: the disc-shaped ship that the snake dude tries and fails to ram you with at the end of the first half of Fortune Night is the same type of craft that shows up again as a generic foe in the shmup levels. A nice bit of consistency there.

The more recent games weren't that bad... Agreeing with the sentiments here, Freedom Planet is an awesome game(at least of what I played of it so far). Doesn't seem to be that many people talking about it outside of here though, and that makes me a little disappointed.

Ahahahaha, I forgot the save slots did that. I'm going to have to see what I get for Carol and Milia with that.

There seem to be large chunks of the story missing if you're playing as Carol. It feels really disjointed and confusing.
What does the pink cherry blossom shield do? It seems to draw stuff toward you like the yellow crystal one. Does it block spike damage?
edit: Stage 8's boss is a lot of ridiculous bullshit. It's virtually impossible (as Carol anyway) to reliably dodge its charge attack unless you're up against the far wall. Also why the fuck did they put bouncy platforms in the middle of the arena? I know you're supposed to use them to dodge the charge attack but it's really, really hard to time it so you'll hit the peak of your arc just as he comes through because his hitbox is so wide.

As Lilac, I ignored the spring and just used her boost dash, which offers some invincibility frames at the start. I hear Carol also has a move that provides a moment of invincibility, so you might want to try that. Also, the pink shield draws in life powerups and protects from the occasional poison clouds some enemies release. It's the silver shield that blocks spikes, if I recall.

The cherry blossom shield also spawns (and automatically collects) a health pickup for every 10-ish crystals you collect!
Carol's rapid-fire kick special gives her invulnerability when active, and can indeed be used to avoid taking damage from that boss' charge attack.

Yeah, I figure this boss is not nearly so difficult with Lilac because she can get the hell out of the way, but Carol hasn't got that. I'll try the kick. edit: I'm surprised this game doesn't keep score. It has pointless lives, but no score attack?

Okay so how do you play as Milla? it doesn't let me select her on the startup.

Milla can also only be used in Classic mode, assuming you have unlocked her by completing the relevant stage in Adventure mode.
