I played right after release and had a much harder time with Carol. That said, her play style was a lot more fun.

Overall, Lilac seems way more capable than Carol to the point that playing as Carol presents a much larger challenge except when Carol has the motorcycle powerup, which I haven't considered here because it's pretty easy to lose it, and some of the bosses seem to absolutely rely on you keeping it as long as possible. Outside of a few awkward boss fights that shouldn't have been designed the way they were in the first place, I honestly think Carol is the better character overall. Her wall jumps let her break some of the stages and boss fights, and her lightning kick is a lot more controllable than Lilac's dash attack. Granted, I started playing as her after they rebalanced the bosses, but a lot of the bosses are pretty hard to fight or downright stupid even as Lilac. I found the whole game to be stupid easy with Carol, UNTIL Final Dreadnought... at which point, I think she may have been the hardest of the three characters to use, if only because she's not all that fast without her motorcycle, and wall-scaling was less helpful in the final four stages (or at least the first three of them) than Milla's short flight ability or Lilac's self-catapulting. Lilac was pretty even the whole way through, except I found the final boss easiest with her for some reason (and hardest with Carol). And Milla was basically hard mode, but the final boss wasn't nearly as tough with her as with Carol. The final boss just plain suuuuuuuuuucked as Carol... In general, because I know Ys Origin better than anything else with three playable characters, I equate Lilac with Yunica (pretty average all-around but fun), Carol with Hugo (good for beginners but maybe a little TOO easy), and Milla with The Claw (hardest to use but the most fun to play). -Tom

I almost finished it with Carol until I reached Final Dreadnought 2 (which is the most annoying level for me) and accidentally pressed Quit instead of Restart when I was playing the boss (where I was losing like a noob althought he wanted just a few hits to be knocked out). So I was like "Fuck this shit! I'll finish it another time with Carol! Let's play with Milla now!" Milla's style is quite interesting and original but her low energy makes the game a little harder. My favourite character's play style is Carol's. Νοt only her style resembles Knuckle's (my favourite character in Sonic games) but she also has a motorcycle which makes the game more awesome. Also I love her design and her personality. So overally she's my favourite character from all aspect. Still I also like Milla because she's incredibly cute (expecially at her expession when she flies) and her play style gives a different feeling at the gameplay.

Final Dreadnought 2 is utter BS. It's the only stage in the game that I legitimately just DON'T LIKE. The game would be better off without it, as far as I'm concerned.

For me this stage wouldn't be so annoying if there were more checkpoints like in the all other stages of this game, expecially since it's a stage of the kind "go fetch the key cards and put them at the doors in order to proceed".

That is its biggest problem, but I also find its boss to be easily the most frustrating in the entire game. I think I died more on that particular boss than on even the final boss or the dragon -- and I died a LOT on those three bosses (more than anywhere else by an exponential factor).

Certain bosses are much easier with Milla. But, God damn it, Final Dreadnought 2 is much more annoying when you try to beat it with a character with so much low energy. I know that the low energy exist to balance with her overpower abilities but they don't help so much at this fucking level. At least because of the first part of the stage. The later part where there is lack of oxygen is ok.
Edit: Finally beat the game with Carol! Oh yeah! Now the only one left is Milla.

This sale is going to bankrupt me, but thanks for the tip! Really had no clue about this game until so many people mentioned it in the year-end thread. Really love how it looks like a classic Sonic game. The voice acting, though...

Really love how it looks like a classic Sonic game. The voice acting, though... I like the voice-acting a lot, myself, but that's because it reminds me of the Sonic SatAM cartoon -- which is sort of the idea. The cutscenes are designed to feel like a really good Saturday morning cartoon, and I think they achieve that. If you don't care about the story, though, you can play in "Classic Mode," which just... completely omits it. Stages only, no cutscenes. -Tom

It's awesome that they offered that option. Even if you like the voice acting, it's nice to be able to just play it as a straight Sonic clone, if that's what you're in the mood for. Class act all around.

The story is pretty Saturday morning cartoony, but it feels like it was compromised in places. There are sections of the story where it's really really unclear how they got from one point to another.

I completely agree. And apparently, it was: the devs felt the cutscenes were getting too long, so they actually trimmed them by quite a bit by the final game. Which is kind of a shame, as it does leave some pretty big gaps in what is otherwise a pretty decent story. -Tom

Of all the things to cut, a jail break was probably not one of them

Agreed. That, as well as how the hell Lilac and Torque made it out of Thermal Base alive (it just sort of cut to them getting rescued!), are the biggest sticking points for me in the story. If those two things were shown, I think I would've ranked the story as a damned fine one overall. As-is, I can only really say that I enjoyed it, despite its flaws. -Tom
