I finished it as Carol. While I enjoyed the game a lot I feel like it could've used some more tweaking overall. The game's setup is pretty heavily geared toward Lilac - a lot of the bosses are way, way harder with Carol because she lacks the aerial mobility that Lilac's special attack gives her (although there are one or two fights where Carol seems to have the advantage, such as Super Serpentine, and the morphing train thing because the bike gives you a double jump but I haven't actually fought those bosses as anybody else yet so that's just guessing.) Aside from that, the game's pretty close to being great, except that the story sections seem really rushed toward the end. The second chapter's story cutscene goes on for a billion years while some of the ending sections don't even HAVE story cutscenes and thus things go unexplained. There's a sudden, jarring transition from one locale to the next. Not that it really matters I guess since the story isn't anything special, it just throws off the flow and feel of the end product. Definitely worth the 15 bucks if you like Sonic. Between this, Shovel Knight and Hotline Miami 2 this is looking like a good summer for indie games.

Yeah, I'm only on stage 6 with Lilac so far, but I have to say the lack of transition between the jailbreak scene and being in a jungle-esque environment was pretty jarring. The story had been pretty well connected up till that point, but it really seemed like the devs were just like, "screw it, jungle level next!" for that one. -Tom

Actually, all you have to do is hold up + the attack button.

The more I play of this game the more it feels kind of unfinished. Like I said before, the game is so heavily geared toward playing Lilac that most of the levels and bosses feel like a joke relative to Carol. Lilac seems to have a much wider assortment of moves than Carol does, and she has most of Carol's benefits too. While Carol's special move gives her a multi-hit attack, something I've noticed is that the hits only register on one target at a time. So if you're fighting multiple enemies, the Wild Kick is actually worse than your normal attack, which will strike all enemies in its range, and instead distributes the 4-5 hits across all the enemies in the range, which is something I noticed in the "99 ninjas" fight. When you compare it to Lilac's spin attack, which demolishes everything on top of giving her invincibility and high mobility, it feels a bit slanted. I think the offset here is supposed to be that you can spam Wild Kick 3-4 times from a full meter, but in the amount of time it takes to burn up your meter, Lilac could have done her meter-draining special attack and refilled her bar to use it again. This made the giant mantis fight trivial while with Carol it takes significantly longer to damage the boss. Lilac also has a ninja kick attack that throws her down and forward, which really feels like an attack Carol should have had, because it would have given her a great deal more control over her aerial mobility, especially as a combo from her leap attack and wall jump. Lilac also for some reason has a ducking kick, while Carol has no ducking attack whatsoever, so if you're ducking and attacking it forces you to stand up and widen your hitbox.
Overall, Lilac seems way more capable than Carol to the point that playing as Carol presents a much larger challenge except when Carol has the motorcycle powerup, which I haven't considered here because it's pretty easy to lose it, and some of the bosses seem to absolutely rely on you keeping it as long as possible. But even then, I don't feel like the motorcycle powerup makes her quite as capable overall, because the motorcycle's main attraction, the double jump spin attack thing, is something Lilac gets by default.
that was my overthinking of game mechanics, have a nice day
edit: i also hate that you can't attack from a ladder.

Patch notes below, highlight to read 'em: Changes
- Life petals are now replenished between stages. - Scenery has been added to the top area of Dragon Valley's final map so it doesn't look so unfinished to players who find their way up there somehow. - In Lilac's version of Fortune Night, Serpentine no longer uses his missile attack on Normal and below. He still uses it in Jade Creek on all difficulties. - If you are stunlocked by the DNA Cannons in Sky Battalion or Final Dreadnought 3/4 and you lose all of your petals in the process, you will not die in the middle of the stunlock. Only getting hurt at the beginning of the stunlock will kill you. - Normal and below, Neera will only turn to face you when landing. - The giant green lasers from the Absolution no longer stunlock. Instead they knock the player backwards and deal a fixed amount of damage. - Added two checkpoints to Final Dreadnought 2's first map. - One of the Axle Turrets in FD2's oxygen segment has been removed to make it easier/faster to get through that part. - Final Dreadnought 2's boss waits longer between attacks and has a longer windup time for its dash move on Normal and below. - Final Dreadnought 3's boss fires one less orb while flying on Normal and below, making its flight projectiles easier to jump over. - Final Dreadnought 4's first vertical section has been rearranged to be less tedious. More shield crystals have been placed in the stage as well. - Lord Brevon's power suit waits longer between certain attacks on Normal and below. The attacks themselves are unchanged. - Lord Brevon uses a more choreographed attack sequence on Normal and below, along with pausing slightly longer between attacks. The attacks themselves are unchanged.
Fixes
- "This file will be deleted" message showing when a blank file is selected and the cursor is on the Return option - Difficulty setting wasn't properly saving - Controller sensitivity wasn't properly saving - Milla could slide up walls and steep hills while holding down the shield button without losing momentum - (Attempted) Player getting locked in a stun position instead of dying - Skipping Carol's cutscene where she's about to enter Thermal Base brings her back to Sky BattalionAlso, if you hate yourself enough, the bosses are unaffected on Hard mode.

Just finished Freedom Planet with Lilac at Adventure Mode. Not only it's a great Sonic-inspirited game (maybe the only one which is actually good) but it also has more enriched gameplay than official 2D Sonic games (excluding Sonic Colors DS) with wonderful Treasure/Konami games touchings (expecially at the bosses which are much more interesting than Sonic bosses). Now I'm playing Classic Mode with Carol (which plays similarly with Knuckles) and then I'll play with Milla.
My only, minor complains about this game are: - The voice acting is kinda annoying in some points, expecially at the forced drama scenes. Sure, the main female trio's voices are cute (expecially at the comic scenes) but the game could be done without them (they could only keep the voices during gameplay). - The cut-scenes are too long for a platform game. Fortunately in Classic Mode they don't exist. My advice? If you haven't played this game yet and you don't give a crap about its story, play the Classic Mode instead of Adventure. - The character design at some characters (like Milla's which is like a Cream the Rabbit rip-off) are like Sonic Original Characters. I know this is a Sonic-tribute game but still the character design could be a little different.
Putting aside these unimportant complains which don't affect the game so much, Freedom Planet is one the best 2D games I've ever played and a first class tribute to 16-bit games, expecially for Mega Drive. By the way, has anyone else play Sonic: After the Sequel? Lilac makes a cameo there. I'm surprised that Sega didn't ceased the project despite its popularity.

Curious what you'll think after you've played as Milla. I've beaten the game with all three characters at this point, and Milla is far and away my favorite to control -- and she has a VERY different feel from the other two. Also, am I the only one who really enjoyed the story scenes AND the voice acting? I just wish there were more of it -- I wanted a full Adventure mode for Milla, and I wanted extra content to explain the sudden jumps in time during the jailbreak, and after the torture scene. Fortunately, I guess an Adventure mode for Milla is getting patched in? Along with gameplay modes for Torque and Spade. -Tom

Also, am I the only one who really enjoyed the story scenes AND the voice acting? You're not the only one. For me the story was ok but it'd better if the cut-scenes were shorter, like in most popular 16-bit platform/action games. The voice acting was also all right but kinda forced and irritating in some points, expecially when a character was screaming. But that's just me, so ignore my complains. Between this, Shovel Knight and Hotline Miami 2 this is looking like a good summer for indie games. Putting aside HM (which I don't like), I'll agree that this is a good summer for indie games thanks to Shovel Knight and Freedom Planet. Speaking for which, wasn't Undertale supposed to be released in this summer too?

Shovel Knight and Freedom Planet (with cutscenes disabled) were a blast. If only Owlboy could have been released this year as planned...

Shovel Knight's cutscenes not only were short but kickass as well. And I love the story and the characters. Also they made a great combination of epicness, humor, romance and drama (manly tears).

Outside of a few awkward boss fights that shouldn't have been designed the way they were in the first place, I honestly think Carol is the better character overall. Her wall jumps let her break some of the stages and boss fights, and her lightning kick is a lot more controllable than Lilac's dash attack. Granted, I started playing as her after they rebalanced the bosses, but a lot of the bosses are pretty hard to fight or downright stupid even as Lilac.
