I was torn for a while between Master of Orion and Treasure Hunter G, both are games I've been meaning to get around to... But I gotta go with Treasure Hunter G, because I lurves me some turn-based JRPG goodness!

Edit: I changed my mind. My vote goes to Ogre Battle 64.
Since this is my 1st post in this forum, I take the opportunity to say great podcast guys. Thanks for the remarkable job.

I see that this month we have Master of Orion and two games that sadly are not Master of Orion.
Sorry, games that aren't Master of Orion! Maybe if you were choices in a month that didn't have a game that is Master of Orion I would care about you!
I'm voting for Master of Orion, is what I'm saying.

Unfortunately, it looks like GOG's sale will end before the voting (July 5 at 12:59 GMT). By my count MOO is ahead of Treasure Hunter G by 2 votes, so if you want the game at the sale price, it looks like you need to take a gamble On the plus side, it's only $6 normally, so it's not a huge difference.

Heh, guess I'd better install my copy of MoO just in case.

The worst case scenario if Master of Orion doesn't win but you bought it already is that you now own Master of Orion and it was super cheap.
I'm not seeing the problem here!

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii... have no idea what I'm doing. If anybody can give a primer on what to do in the next several turns of any given game, I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one who would appreciate it. I would also like to know which of the races are the best to pick before you actually start the game, at least for beginners.

Yeah, that looks like the same one that comes with the GOG version.
As for starting race, the manual recommends the Klackons, with a Medium-sized galaxy and Simple difficulty. I'd recommend browsing the manual that Cardinalfang uploaded (though you should already have it if you got the game from GOG). The manual appears to have some useful hints on page 29 (page 40 of the overall document).
As for me, I've got my GOG copy installed (then copied to my main Dosbox setup), and ready to go. However, since I'm going on vacation tomorrow, I won't be starting for a week.

I would also like to know which of the races are the best to pick before you actually start the game, at least for beginners. The quick reference card recommends the Alkaris, Klackons, and Silicoids for beginners. Also, apparently you should pick a medium-sized galaxy for your first outing (small will lead to contact with other races too quickly). Anyway, I'm scared about playing this one, since I've never played a resource management game for realz - I screwed around with stuff like Sim Earth in computer lab class as a kid, but that's about it. It'll be an interesting challenge though.

As with most 4X games and strategy games in general the best thing to do is to jump in - you're going to lose the first few games for sure so just try to work out what's going on (and read the manual!). My experience with Orion is limited to 2 and 3 so this will be a thing.

Today, SPACECAT from the planet CATSPACE sets out across the galaxy to explore strange new worlds, discover new civilizations, and then shoot those civilizations directly in the face.
There shall be no diplomatic victory. There shall be only total galactic annihilation.

OK, here's a couple of questions:
1. I know 'BC' is your money, but how do you see how much is left, and how do you get more? I'm figuring it has something to do with your production, but I don't know how to see how much you have total.
2. One of my planets rebelled, and I'm not sure how to fix it. I parked one of my fighters near the planet in question for a few turns, but nothing happened. How do I get things under control?
Also, protip: Don't fuck with The Guardian. No matter how many ships you bring, no matter how good the stuff on them is, it's not enough, and you WILL need more.
