My only issue with SORR is that there isn't a straight SOR3 path. As a result, most of the SOR3 stage are on hidden paths or diverge away quickly to SOR2 or 1. Also this thread should be remained "HG101 home to joyless people, news at 11". It's amazing how the forum of a website dedicated to the appreciation of video games attracts so many people who hate everything. Yeah, seriously. I feel like you basically have to make a concentrated effort to be so negative about everything all the time like some people can. I'd imagine having that kind of outlook on everything all the time couldn't be healthy for anybody, but what do I know? :V

If we frequently act negative about flaws in games, it's because we care that much about our hobby. That's Hardcore Gaming for you.

it's currently going through the popularity backlash cycle, but I just want to say that I consider The Last of Us to be a game as good as anything else I've played What is it getting backlash for? It's a really good game.

I take less umbrage with people criticizing games, and more with people that jump on others for simply stating that X game is their favorite. I mean, it gets tiring when forum poster Y says "I like game X!", to which forum poster ZZZ replies " No, poster Y, game X is shit, and here is a meticulous breakdown of why your tastes are only befitting human garbage!!!"

I'd calm down if your posts actually explained your positions on things. I don't want just a simple "no." That's not being constructive. Give me a reason why you don't want to start a stand-alone thread. Otherwise you just look lazy. because I'd rather let the conversation ebb and flow naturally I don't care enough to start a whole fucking whedon thread because I'd said all I had to say

You know what really sucks? Having friends that like Joss Whedon and then having to watch "Much Ado About Nothing" out of politeness.

Man, I really wasn't trying to turn this into a Joss Whedon hate-fest thread. I was strictly using that as an example to try explaining what I meant by "swagger." And I honestly wasn't trying to be negative with that whole "swagger" thing, either -- I was trying to show sympathy for those who are turned off by games like Guacamelee, since it seemed like their disinterest in the game was not exactly going over well here. You guys are so excitable! Chill, yo. Games are fun. Let's enjoy talking about them. -Tom

Sometimes, I wish we could have a thread that didn't devolve into people bitching at each other.

And now, the dudes are lining up because they hear we got swagger
But we kick them to the curb unless they look like Mick Jagger
- Kesha Rose Sebert
The only Whedon I've seen was Serenity but I thought it was pretty good so suck on that, bitches.
Now I'll make some attempt to contribute to the thread:
All the 3D Marios > the 2D Marios (excepting Yoshi's Island if that counts, which might surpass all of them), and I haven't even played the Galaxy games or the one on the Wii U! Can't wait to get one of those and try those games
Metroid Prime (I've only played part of 2 and haven't played 3) > the first Metroid
ADG Interactive's remakes of the first three King's Quest games and Quest for Glory II > well I haven't really played the originals except for some of the first King's Quest, so I can't speak with certainty, but i can't imagine enjoying the original versions more
Similarly, Infamous Adventure's Space Quest II remake is so good that I don't see myself liking the original version more, especially reading how it's seen as the worst in the series.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent > uhh, I dunno, some older horror games that aren't as good? Waxworks maybe? No real similarities between the two except the first-person perspective and puzzle-solving. Waxworks has a cool atmosphere but I can't fathom ever finishing that game without a help guide. It supposedly is one of those "if you didn't get this item/lost it/used it too early you just fucked yourself over big time!" kind of adventure games, and the dungeon-crawling aspects aren't that well-executed even though the idea of combining the two genres is interesting.
The good Sonic games after Sonic 1 > Sonic 1, which I don't really like at all
...I don't know, I have neither any of the modern consoles nor a computer that can run the more top-heavy games. Plus I leave too many games either unfinished or just unplayed.
And if there's a Metroidlike that surpasses the rest of the genre, I would imagine it would be Knytt Underground. I mean, it has to be, right? Nifflas has done no wrong, and what I played of Chapter 1 was really good. And all I've been told about how gargantuan Chapter 3 is... I own the game, I even get myself excited at the prospect of playing it, but I never do. There's some unconscious resistance pulling me back from playing any of the games I have that I want to play and can play on this computer with all its limited capabilities.

There's some unconscious resistance pulling me back from playing any of the games I have that I want to play and can play on this computer with all its limited capabilities. Knytt Underground is very good, but feels kind of... empty, as Metroidvanias go. It's like, 1600 screens large, but most of them are just screens you pass through. Makes for good atmosphere, but I don't think I'd call it the best of its genre -- in fact, I actually think the two pack-in games in Knytt Stories are overall better experiences (as is Saira, and possibly Within a Deep Forest if you take away the frustration factor). For quality modern Metroidvanias, the best ones that come to mind for me are La-Mulana, Treasure Adventure Game and Strider 2014. And of those, only La-Mulana puts the rest of the genre to shame completely IMHO -- though the other two can still stand toe-to-toe with the best of 'em, as far as I'm concerned (say what anyone will, I thought Strider 2014 was a nearly flawless experience). -Tom
