Winter's closing in, it's getting dark pretty early now, and for some reason, today, I played both Darkwing Duck and TMNT on the GBA one after another, and noticed that these games are also rather "night-centric". Since I tend to get excited about games that nail a certain atmosphere, this got me thinking which other games also have a rather nocturnal setting to them. I guess "retro" is a rather loose term - I just didn't want this to devolve into a discussion about contemporary games I'm not familiar with Feel free to post any more modern games as well. And since I guess most people won't play a game for the "it takes place at night"-factor alone, good games are always a bonus. Some games that come to mind: -Both the Konami and the Ubisoft Turtles games for the GBA -Darkwing Duck (especially the Game Boy version, which doesn't feature any blue skies) -Streets Of Rage -Mortal Kombat II & 3 -Hunter Hunted -Deus Ex -Veil Of Darkness -Demon's Crest -The Legend Of Spyro: The Eternal Night -Batman Returns (DOS version too, making this the only adventure on this list, although not a very good one) -Urban Chaos (well, it was a cool concept for its time) -Every good Metroid game -X-COM / UFO: Enemy Unknown / Terror From The Deep

Besides Zero Mission*, Super, and Prime being the easy top three and set during the day, I can't think of any game aside from II** that takes place at night. There are those set in outerspace, but that shouldn't count (and Fusion and Other M are the series' nadir). *Metroid 1 takes place at night, but ZM is a retcon (and superior). **Could be more of a tech limitation; I don't recall any stars visible on the planet surface.

The only one I could remember having really bright areas was Other M, and, y'know. Super is set during, at the very least, dusk, and isn't too bright.
But I suppose that's not quite night. Damn!

Every Batman game ever? The Arkham games and the SNES's "The adventures of Batman and Robin" are obvious choices.
I suppose it's not always the case, but levels in the Sly Cooper series take place at night time more often than not. Likewise for Persona 3.
Luigi's Mansion. (dur)
Are we gonna include horror games? I feel like most horror games take place at night, so it's hardly fair, but Corpse Party deserves mention I think.
I felt like I had a lot of answers, but when I thought about each game, most of them end up switching to daylight eventually. I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty.

The shmup parts of Cauldron (for home computers) were always set at night, and speaking of shmups starring a witch on a broom the first Cotton was always set at night IIRC.
A more modern game (but still retro-styled) where it's always night is Maldita Castilla by Locomalito. Also, today as a randomly-selected HG101 article I got Wiz 'n' Liz which always has a starry sky (and a creepy moon) for background as well.

The best horror game of all time, Silent Hill 2, takes place during what feels like (appropriately enough) weather's equivalent to purgatory (although I think there is a part that takes place at night?). Sweet Home, Resident Evil 2 and Clock Tower all take place at night for the most part, though.
I suppose we include whatever yields discussions!
For one, why Super Metroid feels like it should be played at night and alone, although it supposedly takes place during an overcast late morning.
Two adventure games: Leisure Suit Larry The Colonel's Bequest

All of Gunpoint's levels take place at night.
[edit] Dammit, I missed the "retro" thing. Oh well. Gunpoint is still awesome.

For me, no other game is better to play late at night than Backstreet Billiards. You can just feel the seedy nocturnal atmosphere seeping through. It's secretly also the best pool game out there, with a not too shabby story mode in tow.
