Okay it's not a "current" trend but I didn't want to open a new thread just for this... I'm sick and tired of the "boss rushes" at the end of a game, especially when there's no explanation at all as to why we have to fight them all again. It's the worst kind of padding. Something even vaguely interesting could be done with them, for example the Doc Robots of Mega Man III (that also are the bosses of the *previous* game), or maybe stuff like "Big Bad has zombified/possessed them and we have to put them to rest", but no, it's mostly the same crap all over again.

I must be one of the few people who still enjoys open world games. They're at their best when there's an actual reason for the world to be open. I love the "world is your oyster" approach to games, where the story is just window dressing and the entire point of the game is to explore this massive world you've been given. On the other hand, I am getting pretty damn tired of the Ubisoft template of climbing towers to reveal the map and doing the same kind of mission in a bunch of different places to earn the right to respawn/fast-travel in more locations. And don't even get me started on the Totally Arbitrary Collectible Objects; they're really only excusable when the objects themselves have some intrinsic value to the player, like Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon's VHS tapes that come with ridiculous descriptions of whatever movie is on them (not to mention Michael Biehn's comments like "I hope I don't have to collect any more fucking feathers.")

There's a right way and a wrong way to do open world games, same as any other genre.
I love open world games but I do agree there's getting to be too much busy work in them.

I wish more Grand Theft Auto clones could take lessons from Sleeping Dogs. That game is the most fun I've had with the formula since Saints Row 3.

I recently beat Sleeping Dogs on 360 and I agree. It was a lot of fun. A successful blend of Yakuza and GTA. Story could have been better, but everything else was great.

I liked how they explained it in MGR and it was only a couple redone Boss's. I think having some sort of context goes a long way then just putting in there for the sake of adding 'more content'.

Anything like these:
Call of Duty Battlefield Counterstrike Team Fortress Halo Rainbow Six Half-Life Fallout
Too many FPS games associated with wars and conflicts.

games with chapter structures
Actually, I don't have a problem with chapters, but some developers use it as an excuse for repetitive mission starts or as weak story telling.
Yours sincerely

How about endings where ONE choice can fix everything to upcoming danger For example
Psycho Killer are ready to kill you and you got zero chance to survive his attack What you gonna do? 1.Said to Psycho Killer Dont Kill me 2.Run Away from him
If you pick first choice Psycho killer are about kill you but get shot in head by policeman who save you in right time but if you pick second choice you run away from him but Psycho Killer get killed by own trap who supposed to kill you not him.

Half-Life does not really have anything to do with war and conflicts though, at least not in the way something like Call of Duty does, in fact the original Half-Life subverts the idea by having the gung ho American soldiers be bad guys you're fighting against. I agree though that there needs to be more diverse themes in FPS.

I've grown to despise boss rushes and see them as super-duper lazy. BUT the one in MGR isn't too bad; as tokenflipguy said above, it's only a couple of bosses and they're weaker than the real McCoys.

Unfortunately boss rushes at the end of a game is still used at modern Megaman-style games like Azure Striker Gunvolt and The Legend of Dark Witch. The reason I hate it is that you have to fight them one after another and then you have to fight the final boss. If you lose at final boss? You have to fight the boss rushes again! The only modern game that did it right with boss rushes (at least from the ones I have played) is Shovel Knight.
