Though it is a Pac Man clone, I like the PC Engine Batman for its awesome music.
Also, any license done by Capcom is a good game, really.

Punisher: the Capcom beat-em up was neat-o fun. (arcade) Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara (arcade) I remember Tron (arcade) being popular when it came out, but I didn't play it. The Golgo-13 NES game, one of the few where you got laid, twice. (I'm counting taking the princess to the inn in Dragon Warrior I as getting laid)

The Warriors was pretty good, and I thought Def Jam Vendetta and Def Jam Fight for New York were both games that at the very least, didn't suck. Vendetta was okay. FFNY was, I thought, a surprisingly awesome free-for-all fighting game. I'm surprised the Sam & Max series hasn't been brought up yet.

For games based on novels, Brave Story: New Traveler on the PSP is *excellent*. While some might argue that it's based on the anime movie that was made FROM the original novel by Miyuki Miyabe, those who have read the novel will be forced to disagree, as the PSP game's (entirely original) story was very obviously written by someone who knew the source material inside and out, and absolutely loved it. Virtually everything about it is excellent, and the game is exponentially better if you've read the book.
I'll also say that back in the NES day, well over half the licensed games out there were absolutely wonderful. I mean, sure, there were duds like Back to the Future and Heroes of the Lance... but then there were just some really outstanding titles, like The Goonies 1 and 2, Willow, Gremlins 2, Spy vs. Spy, Kyattou Ninden Teyandee! (Samurai Pizza Cats), pretty much EVERY Disney/Capcom game (as previously noted), The Three Stooges (arguably - I liked it, at least!), Friday the 13th (also arguably - I actually really enjoyed this game!), numerous Batman games, and so on and so forth. It wasn't until the late SNES era that licensed games really started sucking on a regular basis...

Speaking of Gremlins 2...how was the GBA Gremlins game?

Speaking of Gremlins 2...how was the GBA Gremlins game? From what I heard about it, I'm guessing it's not too hot. It sounds like another typical platformer. The NES one is wicked awesome, though. Some licensed games that don't suck: Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle NES/GB Astro Boy GBA Micro Machines UN Squadron/Area 88 Terminator 2 Arcade TMNT 1-3 NES TMNT Arcade TMNT 1-2 GB (haven't played 3) Justice League Heroes the Flash GBA Spider-Man 2600 Spider-Man PSX Spider-Man GBC Spider-Man Arcade Duck Tales 1-2 NES/GB Darkwing Duck NES/GB Magical Quest SNES World of Illusion Genesis Popeye Arcade/NES/2600 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Arcade Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis PC Rescue Rangers 1-2 NES Batman NES Batman GB Batman Return of the Joker NES Goonies 1-2 NES/Vs. System Arcade/FC

Oh yeah, seconded on the TMNT games and Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle (and Bugs Bunny's Birthday Bash, too, even though it's not AS good). Forgot about those. Man, the NES had so many awesome licensed games! What happened?! How did licensed games fall so far?!

It's much more difficult to make a 3D game. The amount of time allotted to a dev team is many times proportional to their quality of product. That's why there are fewer good licensed games on consoles and we still see some great ones on handhelds.

So the obvious response to that is, why does it have to be 3D? Why not, you know, just make a TOP-NOTCH 2D LICENSED GAME?! I know a lot of people think that wouldn't appeal to a casual gaming audience, but personally, I don't see why it wouldn't. A good game is a good game... as long as the graphics are GOOD, I don't think anyone will complain if it's 2D instead of 3D. Just look at Odin Sphere!

Who bought Odin Sphere outside of, y'know, "hardcore" gamers?

Who bought Odin Sphere outside of, y'know, "hardcore" gamers? As I understand it, sales for Odin Sphere were reasonably good... so obviously somebody did! And if they didn't, it would be more attributable to the fact that Odin Sphere is an "unknown" name, and an action RPG to boot. I doubt the fact that it's 2D has much, if anything, to do with its sales figures. Make a 2D Pirates of the Caribbean game, though, and I betcha it'll sell like hot cakes! -Tom

I've heard good things about the 16-Bit True Lies game. I've also heard its mindnumbingly difficult...

Icon was so bad that EA disbanded the studio that developed it. If they make a Def Jam 4, I hope they tap AKI to do it again.
