Well 1up gave it a C cause it is just another Resident Evil 4 clone. I'll be looking forward to giving this a go all the same cause they raved about Dead Space despite it being just another Resident Evil 4 clone but at least this game looks like it might have something resembling personality.

1up is a pretty bad choice to listen to for opinions on videogames though

I just found the contradiction amusing really- despite all the praise for Dead Space I can't think of a single interesting thing it brought to the table. The "Improved" sequel was merely longer- I didn't see the great improvements it brought to be perfectly honest. Both are decent games, don't get me wrong but the high praise they received for being "RE4 in spaaaaaaace!" and then for 1up to go "oh this is just RE4 but with an odd sense of humour" just seems a little rich to me. Who knows though, maybe I will play this and find it just as average as Dead Space.

the problem is the experience in shadows of the dudes and resident dude 4 is that theyre almost radically different game shadow of the dudes whole atmosphere and flow is almost like a puzzle not some sort of action thing where flogging down the hungry mouths of some ravenous townsfolk with your phallic truncheon is the main focus

In their Contra retrospective, they said Neo Contra was "not worth it" because it didn't have a Smash TV-style controls, which is a pretty retarded reason for shitting on an otherwise good game. Almost all of their retrospectives are like that. 1UP likes to pretend that they cater to a "hardcore" and "underground" demographic when most of their writers don't even know what they're talking about. Who cares if Shadows of the Damned rips off the Resident Evil 4 formula? What matters is how it improves upon the formula and the 1UP review doesn't get into that. Also, complaining about a game's length is stupid. I much rather play a really good game that lasts 5 hours than a boring one that lasts 80.

A good Resident Evil 4 clone is worth a thousand Resident Evil 5's (or Dead Space 2's). Shadows of the Damned looks so stylish though.

IGN's complaint that it plays like a game from 2007 feels pretty nonsensical to me. Frankly, I don't find being unable to move and shoot at the same time to be a conscious gameplay choice, not an archaic element. As is the apparent slowness of aiming: frankly, I wish more games would change the speed you aim depending on the weight of the weapon. It would certainly make pistols a lot more useful.

You actually can move and shoot, you just move slower. It's very similar to Dead Space, in that regard. They also added a neat feature to where you can instantly turn 180 while aiming. Anyway, the game is pretty amazing. It's very funny and the action is completely relentless. I'd have personally liked it a bit more "exploratory" and slow-paced (in the vein of DS2 or RE4), but it works extremely well for what it is.

So I can chalk it all up to the recent trend of reviews being all "lol Japanese games are dumb"?

I don't get why reviewers are sometimes being harsh on it, it's no more "archaic" than Dead Space 2 (arguably more innovative and fresh than Dead Space 2), which had rave reviews. I still consider DS2 a better game, but some of the criticisms levied toward SotD are pretty ridiculous. It's still getting fairly good scores, but it's for really silly reasons it's not getting better than what it is now. I don't think reviewers have bias against Japanese games, they just generally tend to have bias toward anything that hasn't generated a fuckton of marketing steam. My mind is still blown that Demon's Souls more or less got the appreciation it deserved, given how "archaic" and unforgiving it is.
Edit:
I guess I should clarify, given the proximity of this release to Duke Nukem's (and Duke Nukem getting lower scores than it deserves, as well), that it's not just marketing steam that seems to cloud the heads of reviewers, but also whatever the fuck they deem "archaic" to mean.

Hmm...Resident Evil 4-like, and I was digging the weirdness of it all in the trailers...may have to consider getting this one. I LOVES RE4, so seeing a pseudo-sequel that is just crazy catches my interest big time.

Let's be honest here. Most of these sites are pretty much responsible for providing the advertising of many overhyped games.

I trust word of mouth on this forum infinitely more than any "professional" reviewing site these days. I would love to see the grading of games done away with but then what would metacritic do? Marketing would have to pay people to read reviews for a quotable line on the box! How horrifying
