^ Yeah that was a major reveal at one of the Hopper events. While some of us where on the live stream late at night hoping to see some new footage of DMD, instead that was all the Shadows of the Damned info we got, it's not like we get these VA's

Suda 51 didn't direct it, so giving him all this credit is kind of weird, but whatever. And oddly enough, reviews have been very positive. But I don't like what I've seen. If you play it you can definitely see his influence. The innuendo is everywhere and it oozes his style. What don't you like about it, exactly? It looks like it's trying too hard. Killer7 was deranged and clever. This is just deranged and tacky.

Are you sure we're talking about the same game?

Maybe it's the penis jokes.

I'm just surprised more reviewers aren't jumping all over the dick jokes. You know, making comments like "It's 2011; games have evolved past the need for puerile nonsense blah blah". Like they did with Duke Nukem. Ignoring the dick jokes in a game with Japanese involvement, but not in a white game? What's the world coming to!?!?

I don't think anything in Shadows is offensive, just juvenile.
What I saw of Duke Nukem was just plain vile.

I don't think anything in Shadows is offensive, just juvenile. What I saw of Duke Nukem was just plain vile. Oh, come on. In No More Heroes, you're meant to simulate male masturbation as part of the game. Suda51's always had a hard-on for dick jokes, and thought most of the jokes in Shadows were pretty darn funny. A bit of crude humor every once in a while is great, it's playful and lighthearted - not necessarily "juvenile." Dick jokes can still be clever, too. As for Duke Nukem? Vile? Pffft That game is so tongue-in-cheek I can't believe people have gotten into such a tizzy about it being "offensive." Every single character in that game, including Duke, is a playful caricature. The entire game is a completely unpretentious, harmless satire.

Here's the difference:
For whatever reason the idea that Suda designs bad games on purpose as some kind of message has spread all over, regardless of the fact that I doubt he has ever stated anything like this (I've never read/heard it from from). Because that would mean that even though he is capable of making awesome games he is deliberately making bad ones to make some kind of point ("there are bad games").
Plus, people don't understand things, so they think that by putting a dick joke in his game he is satirizing dick jokes in games. Like how me putting water in my cereal is a satire of water and/or cereal.
3D Realms, and then Gearbox, didn't/don't have this kind of delusional satirical indie cred, so when they put a dick joke in a game, it's seen as just juvenile or offensive dick joke. Regardless of the fact that Duke was definitely meant as a parody of 80s catchphrase action heroes.

I haven't played Duke Nukem Forever, but I think the problem was less that its humor was purile and more that it was misogynistic. Shadows of the Damned doesn't quite have the same tone.
There's a certain level of irony that seems to permeate DNF, that it knows its humor isn't funny and you're supposed to be laughing at that. But there's a VERY fine line you walk with something like that, and from the sounds of it, I don't think they pulled it off comfortably. Shadows of the Damned is tongue-in-cheek but doesn't have the same "look how stupid this is!" vibe going for it.

I think that's pretty much it.
And I don't think No More Heroes went for outright shock value like Shadows did. It was more subtle about things, for the most part.
Not to sound prudish; I don't MIND that kind of humor, but there's good and bad ways of using it.

The internet seems really divided on whether or not DNF is actually misogynistic, with people who identify as feminist sometimes finding themselves staunchly arguing one side or the other. Personally, I believe the game was far too outrageous and aware of its ridiculousness to be considered misogynist. The characters are all too caricatured to be considered misogynist portrayals - the fact they're all called "babes" and less referred to as "women" should be some indication that the game itself and the people who made it all realize these characters are not actual portrayals of remotely realistic women. I can understand arguments accusing DNF of being in bad taste, but it's really not misogynist, and it portrays itself in no worse a way than DN3D did, back in the day. And I don't think No More Heroes went for outright shock value like Shadows did. It was more subtle about things, for the most part. Not to sound prudish; I don't MIND that kind of humor, but there's good and bad ways of using it. Wait? More subtle? Are you kidding me? Did you happen to forget how you recharge your beam sabers in that game? Not only does Travis simulate male masturbation, but the player is meant to join in doing the same. Nothing in Shadows of the Damned makes the player involved in doing something that silly (don't get me wrong, I like "silly" a lot). You also save by taking a shit in No More Heroes, and there's a point in the game where Sylvia treats your beam saber like it's a penis and then kisses it, only for it to turn on after that. I'm not saying that No More Heroes didn't have subtleties that made it great (SotD has them, too), but that game had a bunch of very raunchy humor no more ridiculous than what's in Shadows of the Damned. It's really peculiar for me to see someone turning down SotD for being "tacky," but otherwise being a fan of Suda51's work.

I have yet to play Shadows, but perhaps it's a case of people feeling that the execution isn't as refined as in No More Heroes. This often happens when a quirky creator gets more freedom on a later project.
Also, women are raped and executed in DNF. If that's not misogynistic, it certainly can't be labeled as feminist.
