My tax return came, and I'm planning on plopping some money down for a PS3 this week. There's games I already know I want (Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Super Street Fighter IV, Valkyria Chronicles, God of War 3 [wife and I both enjoy this series], Resident Evil 5), but I'd like some advice as to what else to dig into. I'm not too keen on racing or puzzle games (although I've discovered exceptions - Burnout Paradise is another I'm looking into). Thanks in advance!

If you're interested in Burnout and not generally a racing fan, try the demo of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. It's by the same developer and is an interation of the Burnout concept. I generally don't go for racing games myself, but I had a ton of fun with it.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a must buy. Aside from that, the Yakuza games are always a great way to waste some time.

If you are planning on getting RE5 because you enjoyed RE4 you should consider Dead Space also. RE5 is really good, but Dead Space plays just like RE4/RE5 and the setting is a lot more fresh.

I like Folklore and the Ratchet and Clank Future series a lot. Very fun games.

Thanks for the recommendations so far! Alan - Demon's Souls is indeed intriguing - thanks for the reminder. Hidetoshidecide - Yes, I do recall hearing that. I'll look into it. Lee - I've been meaning to try the Yakuza games, so I'll consider 3. MGS4 is a possibility - I'm not a super-huge fan of the franchise, but I'll see if the latest chapter captures my interest. kyouki - I forgot both Dead Space games - definitely on my list. Ike - I did not care for the PS2 Ratchet & Clank games - are the PS3 ones significantly better? And I'll research Folklore, as I know very little about it.

Uncharted 2! If you at all enjoy old-fashioned action movies (or are a fan of Indiana Jones) then this is a must-buy. Surprisingly lengthy campaign full of likable characters and the best setpieces you'll ever see, plus online multiplayer (both co-op and lots of competitive modes) that are still lively, as well as multiple difficulty modes and a bunch of collectibles. Plus the game is absolutely gorgeous.

I definitely recommend Burnout Paradise, and I usually don't care for racing games either.
Other than that (and the must-haves already mentioned above, such as Yakuza 3, Folklore and Valkyria Chronicles) I thought Heavy Rain was a good game. Also, Eternal Sonata is my favourite JRPG on the console. Little Big Planet is worth playing through at least once too.

If your willing to import a not to high-priced PS3 game you might want to consider Siren: New Translation since it's in english. It's $34.90 at Play-Asia right now. www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-bp-49-en-70-3dll.htmlAlso, I just borrowed Bayonetta right now and am really loving it. If you dig the God of War action-type games I definitely recommend this. More so, if you love Clover/Platinum games.

Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People is a definite must. I'd also recommend Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse. These are both on PSN. Sam & Max is usually $35, but it comes for free with a Playstation Plus subscription, if you're so inclined.
Some other downloadables of note:
Mega Man 9 Mega Man 10 Castle Crashers (You should really enjoy this one in co-op with your wife) Bionic Commando: Rearmed Final Fight: Double Impact (Includes Magic Sword, fuck yeah) Pac-Man Championship Edition DX (FUCK YES) Marvel vs Capcom 2 Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Valkyria Chronicles also has some pretty good DLC missions to add on to the overall experience.
Honestly, at this point, I'd highly recommend that you set aside the $25 a month for a Gamefly subscription. You're about to enter a whole new world, and it would make much more sense to pay a small monthly fee than shelling out hundreds for a bunch of games you may or may not like. Having said that, I'd strongly suggest that you buy Dead Space 2 when you get around to it, as it includes a free copy of the PS3 port of Dead Space: Extraction.

Oh yeah, Eternal Sonata is another good choice. If you can handle the agonizingly slow pace of a modern JRPG, you might also want to look into Star Ocean: The Last Hope International. The PS3 release has bonus content over the original 360 version.
Baoynetta is another good one. I hear it performs better on the 360, but this might be the only way you'll get to play it. You should stick to renting FFXIII, though. What a piece of shit.
-edit-
Oh, and then there's Nier. Another good RPG with a surprisingly catchy soundtrack. The PS3 port of Ico & Shadow of the Colossus will be out in April, as well, and The Last Guardian is scheduled for December.
You might also want to try Batman: Arkham Asylum. Hell, if you're interested, I could sell you my copy, as I've been meaning to switch it out for the 360 version anyway. Can' t forget about Heavy Rain, either. Great game, though not without its flaws. Still, the trial of the lizard in that game...that really blew my mind.
There's also Dragon Age: Origins. You'd want to go for the Ultimate version, as it includes the Awakenings expansion along with all of the DLC. Mass Effect 2 was also just recently ported to the PS3. You'd be missing out on the original, but they summarize the first game for you and allow you to make some key decisions that carry over from ME1 into ME2.
Fallout 3 is another option. Personally, I loved it, but I can fully recognize how annoying Bethesda games can get, if mainly due to the litany of bugs they contain.

Second that Batman Arkham Asylum. It was my first PS3 game and my favorite game of that year. Also, has anyone mentioned Nier yet? If not I will.
