It's the same old story, isn't it? I remember people bitching when the Playstation came out, saying that fighting games were shitty because they had 3D graphics but only 2D gameplay. Then the developers made 3D gameplay and people said that it sucked. Now we're back to 3D graphics with 2D gameplay. Seems like the same thing is going on with Resident Evil. They made essentially the same damn game five or six times over, and everyone said they needed to change. RE4 was a revelation, but RE5 was simply too much of the same thing. How long until they just go back to the way things were? To be fair, I complained about RE4 throwing out the adventure elements I loved even when it was new, so I'm not exactly breaking new ground here. That said, you have a point... "It's getting too samey/why isn't it the same" is a pretty common bipolar complaint that I think everybody engages in from time to time. I think the biggest problem with RE5 isn't that it was samey, though. It's that it just wasn't as well-crafted as RE4 was. I thought the whole game felt rather sloppy, and the fact that I despise any and all AI partners didn't help. At least in RE4 you could tell your escort quest to hide in a box and stay the hell out of your way, but your partner in RE5 insists on being a retard and there's nothing you can do about it.

One thing I hated about 5 is that it felt like entire sections of the game were cut nearly straight from Resident Evil 4, but in a haphazard order which didn't lead to very good pacing. For example, a helicopter aids you in both games at one point, and while by the time it finally shows up in Resident Evil 4 it's almost a relief to finally have backup, it's there in the first chapter or two of 5, so the sense of build-up is gone in 5.

Resident Evil 5 is trash compared to Resident Evil 4.
Forced Co-Op (AI buddy sucks, I shouldn't be forced to play it online), poor pacing, lacklustre weapons, dull boss fights, dull standard enemies (did anyone actually have fun fighting the beta lickers...?), boring dialogue, uninspired environments and a plot so bad that it ruined the canon to the extent they need to reboot the series.
Yeah Resident Evil 5...is not good. The best part of the whole game was the Mercenary mode and even that didn't feel as good as Resident Evil 4's.

It's not that think I RE5 was a bad game, it's just that I think it was incredibly mediocre (and inexcusably poor when compared to its predecessor). It had no idea whether or not it wanted to be single-player or co-op and it suffered massively on both fronts because of it. I've played it through in co-op and single player on both normal and professional and had extremely little fun no matter how I played it.

Bring Shinji Mikami back!
I don't know what the hell happened with Resi 5. After coming off the back of Resi 4 it should have been amazing. It just totally lacked the set pieces and variety in Resi 4 and was just got old fast. I really hope this is a return to form.

I don't know if RE4 and 5 are as awful as you say but I bet they're not worse than Resident Evil Survivor for PSX (which was ranked with 8/10 on Official Playstation Magazine for the God's sake). XD

I agree with all said here- though I thought the game was alright it was a massive, massive dissapointment and the less said about "Wesker Clones" the better.

I don't know if RE4 and 5 are as awful as you say but I bet they're not worse than Resident Evil Survivor for PSX (which was ranked with 8/10 on Official Playstation Magazine for the God's sake). XD Never played Survivor, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were better than that game. I bash Resident Evil 5 a lot, but there are worse games out there. As a sequel to Resident Evil 4 though, it has almost nothing which made me like Resident Evil 4 so much. Unlike 4 which was charmingly cheesy, Resident Evil 5 takes itself much more seriously than any previous game in the entire series. It also has the same basic gameplay mechanics of 4, but with less interesting environments to explore and fewer unique situations. The boss fights are also lame, because almost every one of them is designed around some gimmick weapon that you use only during that particular fight. They probably designed the game that way so that people playing co-op wouldn't be stuck if one person ran out of ammo, but I just wish the game didn't have co-op period. Does anyone here recall that page detailing the design process of Resident Evil 5, and all the things in the game that were changed during development? I recall minor things like the merchant being present, along with major ones like Sheva still being present but only in a supporting role, and the largest one being that it was going to be single-player. I'd love to see how that version of the game would have turned out. Perhaps the game's development took so long because they had other plans in mind, and then they tried to force in co-op at the last minute, which involved scrapping so much of what they had planned up till that point? Whatever the reason is, Resident Evil 5 is easily my least favorite game in the series (at least out of those I've played).

Never played Survivor, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were better than that game. I seriously doubt there is anyone alive who could say they found Survivor more enjoyable - it is a serious, serious dog of a game.

I remember when Resident Evil was a horror game. Those were good times.
I would be more pissed, but Resident Evil Revelations will (hopefully) have the ACTUAL survival horror base covered (even if it has Chris and Jill yet again). My interest would really go up for this game if you could kill Steve Burnside. That alone would make it a day one.

Dead Aim was pretty shitty, too. I'd still say RE5 was worse, though. I didn't expect anything out of the Gun Survivor stuff.

Come on, Gun Survivor isn't THAT bad...plus it has the cleaners who are probably the weirdest thing Resident Evil has ever had. Some sort of Monkey Special Forces.

With Zombies. Where you couldn't do headshots. Everything about that is wrong!

To be fair, Resident Evil never really placed much stock on headshots. You could head shot zombies with the shotgun and the magnum (I think?) in the early games but that was always it. It's just a weird quirk - probably because the team never worked on Lightgun games before had they? Turns out it's coming to PC's - Some character designs here which aren't horrible. Probably have too much personality for what I guess is meant to be a tactical squad of some sort but I'm willing to let that slide in the hopes the characters actually have character.

Oh wow, these character designs look really bad-ass. Pics for those to lazy to click on the link. Also, I had pretty decent fun with Survivor, but then again I wound up playing it on the PSP only recently so it was a weird experience altogether. Defnitly needed some work. I felt Dead Aim was pretty fun. Story wise, I think RE5 was a bit to overly dramatic. I mean I know it was self-parody, but I thought they'd gotten over that since REmake. The gameplay was fun with a friend, but I've heard horror stories about it alone so it probably did need an option to turn the co-op off.
