Yes, you read that right. According to Shacknews, the April issue of OXM has been leaked, revealing a new, squad based Resident Evil game in development. Called Operation Raccoon City, it's currently being handled by Slant Six Games (developers of SOCOM Confrontation). The game is centered around four Umbrella Special Forces members tasked with cleaning up the zombie infestation in Raccoon City after the events of RE2. However, besides the undead, you'll also need to take out any remaining survivors you encounter. Apparently you'll be able to mess with RE canon and kill important characters such as Leon Kennedy, too. Frankly, this sounds awful. I hated the forced coop in RE5, but turning RE into a squad shooter sounds like a recipe for disaster. Worse still, it's being handled by an unproven developer whose only prior experience is a mediocre SOCOM installment. I can't say I'm shocked after the DmC shitstorm, but seriously, Capcom, what the hell happened?

Pretty sure this isn't gonna change the entire series. Sounds more like a 4-player co-op outing for the series. And I liked the co-op in RE5, with friends it's downright addicting. This actually sounds like it could be really fun and sorta spiritual sequel to the co-op in Outbreak. I definitely be keeping it in my sights.

Eh, I'll hold my reservations until I see it. I like SOCOM (although I haven't played the one these guys did), and I like RE, so hey, maybe some wires will cross and I'll like this.
At least it's not RE6...

If I was the producer of this game, I would have come up with a better title. When I saw this thread I thought there'd be a Sly Cooper multiplayer spin-off.

Agreed, and being able to mess around with the canon actually sounds interesting. It's not like they're developing RE6 or something, so in the event that it fails, there's like no harm done.

Canonically wouldn't this either place you on the Mercenaries (who failed miserably) or Hunk's team (who all died). Since Raccoon City was nuked shortly after Leon, Claire and Sherry escaped.
Personally if a better team was handling this I'd be extremely excited because squad based zombie shooters aren't exactly common. As it stands the dev team makes me cautious.

Why don't they develop this as a seperate game? Away from the Resident Evil series. I actually like the sound of Operation Raccoon City but only in concept. Given how Lost Planet 2 turned out though, I can see why many would disagree.

This game is certainly contentious. On the one hand, I really liked RE: Outbreak, and I'm intrigued by the idea of playing a game where you're an Umbrella commando in Raccoon City. On the other hand, RE5 sucked big, huge donkey dick, and this is yet another example of a JP franchise being handed over to Western dev.
Definitely not sure how this one will turn out.

I think the Resident Evil needs to return to it's roots a bit. I think Capcom should keep the shoulder cam and improved combat from RE4, but ditch the massive not-zombie hordes and go back to a more enclosed environment with a bigger focus on the survival and adventure elements that made the series compelling to begin with.

It's the same old story, isn't it? I remember people bitching when the Playstation came out, saying that fighting games were shitty because they had 3D graphics but only 2D gameplay. Then the developers made 3D gameplay and people said that it sucked. Now we're back to 3D graphics with 2D gameplay.
Seems like the same thing is going on with Resident Evil. They made essentially the same damn game five or six times over, and everyone said they needed to change. RE4 was a revelation, but RE5 was simply too much of the same thing. How long until they just go back to the way things were?

The only way to justify the cost of the RE5 CE would be by using the TriCell bag for autoerotic asphyxiation. Hell, my Chris figure arrived broken inside the box.
