VC has a completely different product offering than XBLA in general; comparing them because the games are downloadable is like comparing a Maserati to a Honda because they both run on gasoline.
I think Nintendo does deserve a lot of credit for VC; it's made several hundred classic games available in a commercial format that looks fantastic on modern TVs. I'd like better selection and more options(manual/doc scans, for one), but VC was a good first step.

Ok, let me clarify again. I forgot that virtual console and wiiware were called two different things. My bad. I was not comparing vc to xbla, I was comparing the entirety of wii online to the entirety of the online services of other consoles, using the 360's online marketplace as an example. I don't even know what the 'a' in xbla stands for. The entire argument above is silly.
Let's argue about something other than me being a goofball and forgetting simple stuff.
Here's a topic: I wonder why the heck it took so long for bomberman hero to be put on the vc. They are possibly talking about the next gen nintendo console and nintendo are just getting around to putting that on the vc? The vc's got an ok selection, but why does it take so long? I'd think that a bunch of games would just be put up rather than them stringing us along with games that have already been released for previous consoles.

Maybe I'm just an idiot, but I do see XBLA and VC as being the same thing. They both offer the majority of content for their respective services. If anything, Wii Ware is like the Indie Game section of XBLA. They both exist, and most people don't bother to look at them, let alone buy anything from them.
I really don't see how it's a crime to think this way, but I'll learn to live with the shame.

It's hard to compare the two but I'll play along as the devil's advocate. Look at it from this angle: You walk into a store and want to get either a wii or 360. You first think about what each library has to offer for physical games, and then consider what they have to offer online. Wii's got wiiware with not much to offer, and VC with all kinds of retro games, so that's the system's strong point. The Exbawks online has got new games, and wide variety of indie and lower budget japanese stuff (like snk), and some hd remakes of retro games, so that's its forte. If you like playing your favorite and most popular retro stuff on your new system and not have to hook up older systems to play them, you'll favor the wii online. If you want obscure japanese stuff or new games for your money, or hd remakes, you'll favor the psn or especially xbox online.
A gamer who likes both retro and new stuff will have to weigh the above options. Personally, I have most of the stuff I would want from the vc, and I don't like the slow pace at which they release stuff we should've been able to get from the VC from the beginning. If I didn't have Bomberman Hero and planned on getting it on the VC after hearing about it, I'd have gotten tired of waiting and have already bought a physical cartridge on eBay. So I'd prefer some other system's online service that just has...other stuff. So yes, you can compare the two services for what they have to offer, which is totally separate and probably less important than the physical library of games for each system respectively anyway.
If you just say, "I like games," doesn't matter retro or new, and you already have most of the retro games on the vc, then the xbox online has more games. That's the problem with only (mostly) offering quality retro stuff. Though I still think there must be something good hidden in that wiiware.
Or you can just buy both. Whatever. Pssh.

XBLIG's selection is amazing, just saying ;p I own like two dozen indie games and zero WiiWare games. Maybe that's just personal input, but XBLIG has some amazing stuff for really cheap.

With both, we're ultimately paying arbitrary monopoly money points to lease games.
So aside from different selections and cosmetic things like the online manuals for Wii or Achievements for XBL, no real difference at the core.

Yeah, my words weren't really meant to be a commentary on the quality of stuff on XBLIG or Wii Ware, just that they attract a mere fraction of the audience of the primary services. I really admire the fact that you put so much time into exploring the depths of the Indie Game section. It's like walking into a music store and picking up random CDs. Can't say I have the guts for it, but it could definitely lead to some surprising finds. With both, we're ultimately paying arbitrary monopoly money points to lease games. So aside from different selections and cosmetic things like the online manuals for Wii or Achievements for XBL, no real difference at the core. Definitely true, but the convenience is certainly nice. My wife and I actually tried to set up my Genesis a few weeks ago, and we found that 99% of the games just don't work anymore. I've had a similar issue with my NES and SNES, as well. That reminds me, they really need to add the Genesis version of The Adventures of Batman & Robin to XBLA...

I've got a Famicom hooked up and it looks like ass (well, anything through RCA input).

The ReBirth games count as WiiWare. (fart)
