Hi,
I've spent the last week or so playing Ocarina of Time 3D. It kind of passed me by back when the N64 was en vogue, my friend used to rave all the time about it, but most of it was in vain despite my intimate, loving relationship with earlier Nintendo machines.
Now I have fully experienced it, and I think I can agree with the 99% metacritic score. There's just so much knowledge and expertise in there which makes a good video game work; apart from Half-Life 2 maybe, I haven't played a game which made me want to know what would happen next quite as much as OoT.
I'm now seriously considering getting a Wii, for Twilight Princess.

I was pretty disappointed in the 3DS remake. The graphical updates seem... not that great. The addition of 3D is just as irritating and pointless as it is on any other game. Otherwise, it's Nintendo selling us a 13 year old game for full price. The game was great for its time, and it's still good, but it hasn't really aged as well as everybody seems to think it has.

I think I already own like three versions of this game, too. N64, plus two re-releases on Gamecube. Then again, this is probably just another example of Nintendo catering to the casual market. People who remember playing the game when it came out, but haven't been following the gaming industry since then.

It's exactly that. Zelda in particular has a strange sort of power over non-gamers. When I was working at the game store, ANY gold cartridge game was automatically Zelda, even if it was a completely different game (like Bee 52 on NES for example) and caused people to drop large amounts of money.

I actually liked the fact it looked a lot less blurry and ran a bit smoother- after playing the original way too many times that was a chief complaint. I think however the fact Link still moves so stiffly (and climbs ladders so bloody slowly- I mean come on!) is a big off putter. That and the whole "not worth getting a 3DS for" thing.

Is it at all worth buying a 3DS if I don't already have one to buy a game I already beat 13 years ago? Somebody sell me this - I would love to know the appeal.

It's definitely not worth buying the system for, especially if you've played the game before. The graphics, while undeniably improved, aren't as nice as they should be (characters still have "claw" hands, which to me is pretty inexcusable). And the music, while having to be completely retooled for the system, sounds exactly the same, which was a disappointment.
But it's got some things going for it. Even if the graphics aren't as great as they potentially could be, everything is much sharper and has been given a bump in poly-count and texture resolution and detail, which is a welcome change from the vaseline-covered look the original had. And the "gimmicky" features actually add quite a bit to the experience. The touch screen buttons are surprisingly intuitive and make equipping and using items very easy. Aiming with the gyroscope is quick and accurate. And the 3D.. well, personally I enjoy it. Even if another player doesn't, if it's turned off the game utilizes some minor anti-aliasing, which is nice.
It's always been a good game, and now it looks and (in some ways) plays better. Not worth a system, but you might pick it up if you've already got the 3DS.

I bought this last week, because I haven't played OoT since 2004 when I was into emulating the N64 and made headway into it before stopping, and before that, when it originally came out. The mirrored Master Quest, which it'd be my first time playing after this run, and Boss Challenge modes made me say "OK I'll grab this". This -is- the definitive version of the game, no contest. It runs at a full 30 FPS as opposed to the original's 24, the new graphics do look good, especially over those eye-hurting N64 jaggies (remember that this isn't a full remake, but a "remastering"; Starfox 64 3D is a remake), especially in 3D; hell, I'm approaching the Forest Temple right now, and the entire game I've been playing in it, except when using the motion aiming, because moving your 3DS more than slightly brings you out of the 3D viewing angle. It really helps you get better shots in/use your hookshot more effectively. The touch screen buttons are also a nice replacement of what the other two C buttons did in the original-- If those are "gimmicky" (which seems to be defined lately by gamers as 'anything not the same fucking shit all over again ad-nauseum controls/visual wise') then I want more "gimmicks". Unless you're THAT fanatical of a Zelda fan it's not worth buying a whole 3DS for, but yeah, if you have one it's worth it, especially with not much else coming out at the moment this summer. Only thing I'm mad about is that I'm pissed that I was too late for the free soundtrack dealie by the time I bought the game and signed it up on Club Nintendo. =/ And the music, while having to be completely retooled for the system, sounds exactly the same, which was a disappointment. Supposedly there's a really cool orchestrated version of one of the songs in the credits that makes you wish they redid the whole soundtrack like that, but whatever; I'd take familarity over possible fuck-ups anyday.

To be honest, I'm done buying consoles specifically for games that aren't out yet - already been burned on Mario Galaxy and Heavy Rain. Maybe when Mario 3DS is out and the reviews are in, I might consider that. =P

After NSMB Wii I'm not too confident that Nintendo can make a Mario game that isn't crippled by a horrible and short sighted addition.

I've seen some people say so, but I can't imagine why anyone would seriously feel that way. Even if it were a remake of a game I love, like Final Fantasy VI, I wouldn't buy a system just to play a remake of a game I beat years ago. For me I've had OOT since it came out, but I didn't beat it until a couple years ago. I definitely don't have any interest in getting this, even once I do get a 3DS (or at this point, if I get a 3DS). I thought OOT was good, but not that good. I've never felt like it was the best game of all time, and I definitely wouldn't spend $40 (plus the cost of a 3DS) just to play the same game again in 3D, when I don't care that much about 3D. I can't believe anyone would seriously consider a remake or a port to be a system-selling killer app. It's ridiculous.

It's not a system seller for anybody who has played any of the several other releases of the game to death, but it's a damn fine game, and for those members of the younger generation who haven't ever played the game, it's definitely a very big pro in the "is it worth buying a 3DS yet" debate.

I honestly do not get the hate the 3DS is receiving on these boards. The system has been out for a little over three months and it's already got a great library. Granted, the good stuff are either ports or new entries in established franchises, but since I haven't played the original, it's like a totally new game to me.
And from what I can see on YouTube, I think the graphics upgrade falls somewhere between 'significant' and 'dramatic'. Apart from a few NPC models, there is little about the game which made me go 'hmm, that could have been better'. Seriously.
And what, Link controls stiffly. What the fuck, are you high? The swordplay and evasive manoeuvers you can do is brilliant. Nothing less. Sometimes the context-sensitive action button can cause a little confusion, but it's never in a time critical or stressful situation.
He climbs ladders too slowly?
Also, please stop bitching about the 3D. I happen to love 3D myself. It's the next logical step up from polygon graphics and you know it. It looks terrific and it's immersive. If you don't like it, turn it off, and get free anti-aliasing as a consolation prize. But it's your loss.
It adds to the gameplay. I find myself being that bit more careful when jumping chasms, not to mention it makes judging distances easier. It 'triggers' my fear of heights, and if a game manages to do that, you know it's doing something right.
Sorry about the unfriendly tone, I've been suffering from insomnia the past two days.
