I own a complete N-Gage collection and can say that while the library is small, it's of a rather high quality. Some ports are pretty good (Rayman 3, Splinter Cell, KoF made great use of the big array of buttons), some original games are neat (Ashen, High Seize, Asphalt was spectacular at the time) and some games just blew me away, like Pathway to Glory, Catan (from Capcom of all companies), The Elder Scrolls Travels and Mile High Pinball which all had me completely addicted. There was, of course, also its fair share of terrible ports and original games. Virtua Tennis had no difficulty to speak of, Tomb Raider was uncontrollable, Red Faction would have been nice, if enemies couldn't hit you as soon as you come into sight, etc. Using the N-Gage as a phone sure WAS weird, there's no two ways about it, and it got way too few games for a system that's been on the market for like, what, 3 years? But its a lot further from being a complete waste than the Jaguar, the 3DO and CDi were. It had nearly all functions you could expect from any phone at the time (except for a camera), the games library was diverse and numerous big companies and franchises made an appearance. I had a great time with mine.

The entire concept of "bad" is entirely subjective. So yes, there are such things as bad consoles. It's all in the eye of the beholder.

Say hello to the Amstrad GX4000. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GX4000Or, alternatively, the Amiga CD32 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amiga_CD32I'm not particularly eager to diss anything Amiga since I hold the computer in high regard, but then there's the launch title So, in conclusion; yes, there are bad consoles. Honourable mention goes to the previously mentioned Games.com, and the Virtual Boy just might qualify too. I (used to) have one and that thing sure was a pain in the ass to play. Best thing about it was seeing people coming over play on it. That was amusing. And Teleroboxer was pretty good.

Seconding Pathway to Glory for the N-Gage being surprisingly decent. That and its sequel desperately need to be ported to a place where people can actually play them. They're WWII turn-based strategy games - felt a bit like X-COM, if I remember correctly, though not quite as difficult. The system itself though is a pain in the ass - I have the first model, the one where you need to take apart the thing (battery included) just to change games.
Actually, googling around, I found them to download. Are they emulateable? I wouldn't mind doing an article on these.

I'm surprised of no mention of the Gizmondo so far. Even if the CEO of the company that produced it wasn't involved in the Swedish mob or something like that, what could you say about a handheld console whose cheaper model had the only difference of forcing you to go through in-game ads?

It's all about the games on the system for me. I recently bought a Virtual Boy and even though it's a complete whore to use I was surprised by the high quality of the software on the system. I probably would have been disappointed at the time it came out but really enjoy it now. The Jaguar for me would be pretty bad. Alien vs. Predator gets mentioned a lot but for me it's a really terrible wolfenstein clone. I often find there's at least one game on a system that makes it worth playing which is why I've been after a CDi to play the two good zelda games on it.
The Xbox is a console that I would have regarded as being a bit crap. I loved Steel Battalion, Ninja Gaiden and Panzer Dragoon Orta but other than that there were very few games exclusive to the system. I found the two Halo games very over rated and both were available on PC later and would have loved to have played Phantom Dust but it wasn't available in europe. Online held no appeal since I was getting a better, free service from my PC.

I'd have to agree on that one. The original Xbox had a few decent exclusives, but not enough to warrant its existence.

Sorry sir, we're all out. We only have snide sarcasm.
Also the original NES was a terrible console. Great library, don't get me wrong, but the actual hardware... ugh. I have Vietnam-esque war trips remembering trying to get the fucking thing to work. Sometimes smacking it would actually do the trick.
I wonder if the new, top-loading NES was any more reliable.
The disc tray PS2's were pretty bad, too. Especially when the motor would burn out or a slight misalignment meant disc read errors galore.
Oh yeah, the Virtual Boy and the original N-Gage were abortions in terms of hardware design. I'm wary of any console that has a warning about using it and it killing your eyes. And the N-Gage's dismantling to do something as simple as changing a game was hilarious. No wonder why Nokia's on the brink of bankruptcy with design decisions like that (and their stubbornness of sticking with the horrendous Symbian OS while iPhone and Android were tearing it up, but yeah).

I'm gonna come right out and say it, I had a 32X, and I LOVED it.
Granted, a large part of that was because Blockbuster had bought into it pretty heavily, so when the system inevitably died, and they started liquidating stock, you could buy "previously played" (though I'm sure most of them actually weren't) copies for the price of two rentals, making it really easy to build up a library of games off of lawnmower income. It's not like I had to worry about all those other 32X aficionados in the greater Moncton area buying up all the good stuff before I could get to it.
So, maybe I liked it for all the wrong reasons, but I had a ton of fun with it.
Plus, it had the best golf game ever: 36 Great Holes

Wow, good game or no, that's one of the most snicker-inducingly awful TITLES for a golf game I've heard in quite some time. (:
