This month we're mixing things up yet again: the game for August is Deus Ex, but with a twist! Deus Ex was released on PC, Mac, and PS2, but we're going to be playing the PC version. Most of you are probably familiar with this game, but for those of you that have been living under a rock for the last decade, here's Wikipedia's description of the game:

Set in a dystopian world during the year 2052, the central plot follows rookie United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition agent JC Denton, as he sets out to combat terrorist forces, which have become increasingly prevalent in a world slipping ever further into chaos. As the plot unfolds, Denton becomes entangled in a deep and ancient conspiracy, encountering organizations such as Majestic 12, the Illuminati, and the Hong Kong Triads throughout his journey.

The twist this time is what we're dubbing the Ultra-team Challenge: Rather than voting for the next game, we will instead be taking sign ups for the challenge itself. Once sign ups are over, participants will form small teams. The goal of this challenge will be to play through the entire game by swapping a single save file between each other. Think of it like a high tech game of hot potato!

To accomplish this task, players will be taking turns. Each team member has the entire day to play the game when their turn is up, but they must play the game for no more than 60 minutes before sending the game off to the next team member, who will then continue from where the last person left off. When the team reaches Hong Kong, play time per turn is increased to 90 minutes. Teams are limited to one turn per day, so make it count! If a team member is unable to play when their turn is up, they may pass the game off to the next team member.

Sign up ends on Thursday, August 9th at 10 PM EST.

Working together is a must, so be sure to post tips, tricks, hints or anything else you can think of. You are not required to make a progress report of the game as you play, nor do you have to take screenshots, but it certainly might help your team out if you do!

Sign up me up. Ashamed to say it, but this will be my first time playing DX. Got the GOG.com version, added some high(er)-res skins, and am looking forward to it.

Count me in, but for whatever team I'm on, I have to let you guys know that I've only played about 2 hours of Deus Ex in my life! So hopefully we can recommend how we're building the character/playstyle so I don;t fuck everything up

edit: I forget: are there any mods, graphic-wise or compatibility-wise that we need to be aware of?

I've played through the whole game before, and still have my CGW DVD with the full version and a DX-themed cover image. (That and Thief II make this quite possibly the best gaming magazine cover disc ever.)

I'm down for this, especially since I know a few quirks and secrets in the game.

Sign me in. I'll be bringing in my enforcer style gameplay too just to piss off all stealth lovers.

I'll probably do some intentional goofing off too, so I'll apologize early if someone has to scrape Maggie Chow off the pavement or something like that.

Could we also attempt to play the multiplayer? I've tried it before and while its nothing too spectacular, its still quite fun. I know a good map too.

Depending on how many people sign up, we could all just be on one big team. In which case we'd up the playtime limits a bit.

Also, goofing off and messing things up is encouraged. Whatever you can do to make the game interesting and surprising for the next player is okay by GC9X.

I've played the PC version before but most of my experience was with the PS2 version, something like 10 years ago, back when my computer couldn't run it.

We should make sure there's no incompatbilities between versions though. I forget which version I currently have installed.

I guess the standard is the Game of the year edition, which has the latest patch (1.112fm). There's minor differences between the basic and GOTY version, but you can turn basic into GOTY by patching it and adding few files sites.google.com/site/darkreality/retailvs.goty

Game of the Year edition should be the standard, yeah. You are also free to install graphical mods, such as enhanced textures, but no gameplay mods, as they drastically change how the game is played.

Steam version good enough?

It seems that save files from the Steam and GOG versions are perfectly compatible. That's super great news. But if you haven't bought from Steam already, give GOG some love!

Bit late on the trolley, but I'm in on this too. I played and beat DX several years ago and think that I remember enough to know what I'm doing. Here's a tip up front: The Regeneration augment is god-tier. Once you can get it, do so and put all your points into it.
