This comes out today!!!! ahhhh!!!!!!
I just wish I could have beaten the original Wasteland before this game out. Unfortunately I played through a decent chunk of the original (up to the Temple of Blood), when I got a new hard drive. I did copy some backup saves over, but only up to an earlier point in the game, and I didn't feel like replaying half of the stuff I had already done. Maybe someday, if I am able to finally get my old hard drive to be recognized by the transfer cable I'm using, then maybe I can transfer the save I want to use, and continue off from where I last played.
In the meantime though, I won't let that stop me from trying Wasteland 2. I'm certain they'll make it accessible even to people who didn't play the original, so the fact I've played at least a decent amount of the original I think will help.

Not that I know of, though they've had several gameplay videos released. From what I've heard and read, I'd imagine it plays a little like the first couple Fallout games mixed with X-COM... and of course Wasteland 1.

I'll have to see if this dude is still selling his boxed copy on twitter.

I'm probably going to grab a filzed version of this first before I buy it, because I don't entirely trust the direction that they've taken, considering that I used to play the first one and $40 is a bit more than I'm willing to pay and pray for.

So far I've done the short intro area, and one basic enemy area. I really like this so far It took a little getting used to; in part because I never tried the beta, it took some time to get the hang of the controls. The combat is a little like XCOM in a way, but so far at least, it feels a little more like Fallout 1 and 2, albeit with the ability to directly control multiple characters. One of my favorite parts of the game so far (gameplay spoilers, if you care about such a thing) was finding a gate that was blocking off a couple crates filled with pre-war treasure from the US military. I looked at the gate, and in part thanks to Perception, could tell it was booby-trapped. So I got my demolitions guy to disarm it, and the gate was now clear. Unfortunately I don't have any soldiers with a lockpicking ability, and I also don't have someone who can, for example, use Brute Force. After searching through my inventory for each character though, I did remember that I happened to recently pick up a Pipe Bomb. I gave it to said demolitions guy, and he tossed the bomb at the gated fence, blowing it down so I could move through to the treasure. One of the crates was also booby-trapped, so I had him disarm that trap as well, and got some cool items. yay me!

Okay, I just did a really cool fight. I was able to get each soldier into place behind good cover before initiating combat, and this definitely felt more like XCOM as a result. By far, one of the most frustrating things that occurred was when I sent my handgun-carrying soldier up a ladder to attack a sniper, when suddenly his handgun jammed! agh! At least he had enough action points to head back down the ladder so he wasn't a sitting duck next turn. EDIT: I just did an even better fight! This time around I got to make use of aim bonuses from the rooftops, and took out two of the three enemies I was facing with a single sniper headshot each This is so fucking fun. It also got pretty tense because partway through positioning my soldiers, I sent a couple soldiers (neither of whom have Perception) around a back way so they could approach the enemy from another side, and they ended up triggering a couple mines - getting hurt in the process D: EDIT2: Wow, for so long I overlooked my typo in the first few words: "Okay, I just did a really cool right." Geez

Finished the Ag Center and Highpool so far. Good stuff! Feels like Wasteland, that's for sure. I appreciate the fact that you have to manually select which character and which item/ability to use on an object when interacting with them, like an adventure game. Combat has teeth, and resources are juuuuuust scarce enough to make sure you always have to keep them in mind. The writing is pretty good, too. The Ag Center was designed well and had a good flow, so if the rest of the game follows suit then I'll be happy.
There are a few annoyances I'm not too fond of, however. Full 360 degree camera rotation is nice and all, but the environments are sometimes really busy and have tons of shit that obscure your vision, especially in indoor areas. Way too much time is spent wrangling the camera just so you can see what you're doing. Also, there are a few obnoxious interface bugs. Sometimes, when you right-click an item in your inventory and select "use," the item doesn't go into use mode and you have to open the menu and try again. This happened to me several times when digging up treasure with the shovel, at which point I just added it to the hotbar... then I discovered that the shovel disappears off the hotbar sometimes for no good reason. Ugh.

This happened to me several times when digging up treasure with the shovel, at which point I just added it to the hotbar... then I discovered that the shovel disappears off the hotbar sometimes for no good reason. Ugh. Yeah; I never did get to finish the original Wasteland, but from what I've played of it, the integration of various objects in the world that can be interacted with by people of different training, and the skill-checks involved in each, are pretty well-implemented. I'm happy to see it carried over so efficiently here. It's engaging when you split your party into multiple sub-groups, and you don't have the benefits of the people you left behind in your current team, so that one really needs to plan ahead and think about who to send where. The game is kind of buggy and sloppy in places, which stinks, but overall I haven't experienced anything major in that regard. Probably the most annoying thing was how clunky the character appearance customization screen is; sometimes I'd need to click left or right multiple times to choose a new piece of clothing, and sometimes an option such as skin tone would get changed randomly, when I was not even selecting it right then. Blegh

I contemplated getting the game, but the size is just way, way too much for me...30 GB...am I the only one who think that that's too much? Shame, because the game looks very interesting...

Unless you have a terrible internet connection, I don't really see the problem. The game actually takes up 21.4 GB, and the download is only about 9 GB. Also, hard drives aren't expensive nowadays. You can buy a 500 GB one for the same price of a retail game, and even terabyte drives aren't much more.
