So, there hasn't been a thread yet dedicated to Wasteland 2 specifically, from what I can see via searching the boards. I feel this should be rectified, as Wasteland 2 is sounding like a very nice game.
For those who don't know, Wasteland 2 was one of the first major Kickstarter successes, shortly after Double Fine's adventure game, and managed to raise over $3 million dollars in funding (counting additonal Paypal backers). The original Wasteland was a major CRPG at the time it came out, and proved to be an influence on many future RPGs to come. Among other things, it was notable for featuring a non-class based skill system, so one could customize each character to their liking, regardless of how each of their skills fit together. Wasteland was also one of the first major RPGs to not feature a fantasy setting; in this case taking place in a post-apocalyptic western United States.
After Wasteland, it had a couple spiritual successors; one in the form of Fountain of Dreams, which was not developed by anyone who worked on Wasteland, and ended up being poorly received. Another in the form of Fallout, which would go on to become a major RPG series in and of itself. It wasn't until last year's Kickstarter, however, that a true sequel to the original Wasteland could begin to take form. Since then, inXile has been hard at work on it, initially hoping for a fall 2013 release, though it recently was delayed.
Wasteland 2′s Delay: All About Making Choice Matter
The beta for the game will still be released around the time the full game was originally planned for, but there's no word on when the final product will come out. This beta will be focused, among other things, on improving the sense of interaction and reactivity to the player's choices. There are some examples given in the article, which I think sound pretty awesome, and like what I've been wanting to see in a modern RPG for a long time now. As an example, I generally enjoyed the Mass Effect series, but was disappointed to find out how little my choices as a whole mattered in the overall scheme of things. There are one or two major things here and there that change, but for the most part each playthrough of the series will be the same, which makes replays of each game less interesting. It destroys the illusion that you have a real impact on what is happening, which is disappointing. I know a lot of older RPGs accomplished this to various degrees, but it'll be nice to see a new RPG in that vein which truly allows the player to affect what is happening, to the point where each single playthrough one has of it will be vastly different. I'm very much looking forward to Wasteland 2
