After being canceled for PS3/360 by Sega and abandoned to die a quiet death, the sequel to Platinum's famously divisive Nonstop Climax Action Game has found a home on the Wii U, thanks to Nintendo's benevolence. It's out in Japan right now alongside a port of the original, and due in the US before the end of the month. Here are the things you most need to know about it.
- Local only, but the side missions can be played in co-op with one other person, or a CPU player. Jeanne and Rodin are playable with unique weapons and movesets. Jeanne is less of a direct clone of Bayonetta, and Rodin no longer mimics Balder's fighting style.
- Normal enemies now routinely pull off Killer Instinct-style combo breakers even on standard difficulty if you fail to properly use dodge offset. This behavior was present for big target enemies like Grace and Glory in the original game, but with grunts, only in NSIC mode. Many have complained about this change, but it discourages button mashing and prevents enemies from turning into stunlocked punching bags. Witch Time is less abusable overall.
- Platinum seems to have finally wised up about their headache-inducing implementation of cinematic scenes and QTEs. There are no longer any QTEs that lead to instant death upon failure. Gimmick variety segments are still present, but they never last much longer than 5 minutes each, and have much better controls across the board. And yes, as the internet has probably already informed you, you get to fly an Arwing. Make of this what you will in relation to the upcoming Wii U Star Fox.
- For whatever reason, the ranking system is completely screwed this time around. It works the same as in the original Bayonetta and TW101, except that using items no longer adds a penalty. Going for Pure Platinums is far easier with a stockpile of restorative and offensive items on hand.

Okay, lets try posting that again, but this time with spoiler tags instead of quote tags. Big gameplay spoilers There's a sequence where you can fly with an Arwing. I dont know if its part of main game or a big secret, but its there and its fantastic from what I've seen.

Definitely getting this one. Too bad much discussion end up being arguments over exclusivity (or is it ingenious word of mouth stewing among console war?) I haven't played Bayo 1, due to only having a PS3, so I"m playing that one first.

Yeah I bought a wii u primarily for bayo 2 >_> smash and wind waker hd were a nice bonus lol

Jury's still out if the Kilgore Glitch in Bayonetta 1 has been fixed for this port. Last I heard, Platinum may have decided to leave it in to make unlocking things easier for those who want to use it, since it's rather unlikely that anyone will find it by accident.

What the heck does this mean, exactly? I didn't play Bayonetta nearly as much as the DMC games, so I don't remember this from the 1st game. I really don't like the combo breaker solution to stun-locking enemies in these kinds of games, though, so what does "properly using dodge offset" mean?

What is it with Nintendo hardware not having a market for anything other than kids' games? No More Heroes tanked, and now Bayonetta 2 is heading down the same route. Such a shame.
Well, regardless of whether the general population can get behind it, I'll definitely be picking this game up. The first Bayonetta was amazing, so it's all the better to get both at once.

Dodge offset is dodging in the middle of your combo to quickly reset your attack sequence, so you can shorten post-attack recovery times and avoid triggering a combo breaker.
And No More Heroes was actually Grasshopper's second most successful game behind Lollipop Chainsaw. Overall, it fared better on the Wii than on the PS3/360, though the later PS3 "Red Zone" edition with Move support somehow sold unexpectedly well in Japan. I'm not sure if GHM made any money off the HD versions though, as they were ported by feelplus and Marvelous owns the IP.
There was definitely a stronger market for hardcore M-rated titles on the Wii compared to the U, because of the sheer number of dads who bought one for their families but also took advantage of it themselves. With the prevalence of personal iOS and Android devices, not many people are buying game consoles for their kids and wives anymore these days.

Wii U's M rated titles got gimped, like missing features and in Mass Effect 3's case being sent to die due to a trilogy pack on other consoles (bad publisher, bad!). So the console lost a lot of momentum. I think Bayonetta 2 will be a sleeper in the West, better received than in Japan and I think the original was the same?

The Wii U does have by far the best console version of Deus Ex HR. But the system's loss of momentum has more to do with developers who are moving all their resources over to next-gen not wanting to program a different-engine version of every game for the U. They often did it for the Wii simply because it was selling gangbusters (though software sales were lower compared to PS360), but the U doesn't have that benefit.

NMH must have had a long tail, then, because it absolutely tanked at launch. I remember the videos of nobody showing up to the launch, and Suda looking like a jackass. Felt really bad for the guy.
