I don't think anything in Shadows is offensive, just juvenile. What I saw of Duke Nukem was just plain vile. Oh, come on. In No More Heroes, you're meant to simulate male masturbation as part of the game. Suda51's always had a hard-on for dick jokes, and thought most of the jokes in Shadows were pretty darn funny. A bit of crude humor every once in a while is great, it's playful and lighthearted - not necessarily "juvenile." Dick jokes can still be clever, too. As for Duke Nukem? Vile? Pffft That game is so tongue-in-cheek I can't believe people have gotten into such a tizzy about it being "offensive." Every single character in that game, including Duke, is a playful caricature. The entire game is a completely unpretentious, harmless satire.

Holy fuck, they couldn't come up with a better reason than that? If they're going to lie to us, they could at least try and make it sound convincing.

There's a niche for it, but it's one that seems to be thankfully decreasing, is barely enough to constitute worthy sales (not enough to constitute localization in the case of that acquire game), and is only vocal on the internet.

And Kitten: I wish I could give you some insider info to prove my point, but suffice it to say, Sony is NOT evil. Not even close. Given their pompous advertising, history of poor customer service and numerous, awful faux pas, they sure as hell don't show it! Maybe they've been friendly to you as a company that publishes games on their consoles, but on every other account they display themselves as nothing other than evil and I have no reason to believe otherwise. Have you even been following anything at all about the hackers since the event? They've been hacking damn near anything, whether or not they have a beef with it. They seem to have a penchant for exploiting any security they can. Saying they were hellbent hackers that could have hacked anything is ridiculous, they were able to hack Sony because it was easy, not just because of crazy superhacker conviction. I would be surprised if they haven't already tried to hack Microsoft just as well. Are you KIDDING ME!? The only ones to blame? Wyrdward, you're completely and utterly deluded on this subject. Did you even follow how poorly they handled the situation after getting hacked? They care about their customers? The ones they took over a week to even inform they had been hacked and that their personal information was compromised? Maybe you've never worked customer service and don't comprehend how much they wronged their user base, but Sony fucked up really badly. There was nearly unanimous criticism from reporters about how poorly they handled the situation and even the FBI had to question them about why it took them so long to get to their customer base about incident. Hardly anyone in the US gives a shit about Otaku culture because it's profoundly awful, uninteresting and pathetic. From what I can tell, it looks like a mediocre Yakuza-wannabe where you tear clothes off. This really falls into both the vapid fetish fuel and insular sections of what I was criticizing about Japanese game design, earlier - beat 'em ups are nearly dead, and the only people who are going to care about a mediocre one that plays poorly from Japan are the Japanese. I'll agree with this one. Neither of these games look even slightly interesting to me, or do anything to distinguish themselves from any other generic anime game I've seen. Dangan Ronpa looks particularly awful in character design. Looks pretty, sometimes, but the combat looks no better than Devil May Cry, and I grew tired of Devil May Cry when I beat it about ten years ago. While the game does look artistically innovative (albeit not very appealing to me), the way the game plays shows absolutely nothing to differentiate itself from a ten year history of bland hack n slash games. Like I've already admitted, Atlus is still doing some cool stuff. Catherine looks interesting. I'm not a big fan of puzzle games, but I'm really interested in the premise of the game and I can't say it isn't trying something fresh and new. Combat looks awful (more boring, uninspired beat 'em up/hack n slash gameplay). Setting looks dull. Gravity mechanic seems to do nothing interesting but change the surface you're on. I heard of the original corpse party some time ago, watched some videos, and found myself very uninterested. I was disappointed that I had been recommended to play it after enjoying Yume Nikki. Did you seriously link me this? Isn't To Heart some dating sim series? I have one of the anime series that a friend gave me, and I've never watched it. If a game with awful character designs inspired by a dating sim put into a boring dungeon crawler was meant to make me feel like Japan isn't stagnating, you might want to rethink what your evaluation of video games. It doesn't, at all! You are very sincerely only making me feel even worse about the situation than I did beforehand by trying to argue that these games are proof that Japan is still growing anything but their insularity. Most of what you have used as examples are games that I would honestly use to bolster my own argument that Japan is doing nothing but stagnating. Most of these are low-budget handheld games with generic anime themes that rely heavily on visual novel-esque gameplay. They are dated, they are not innovative, they are ugly and they are unappealing. Arguably, Japanese culture, in general, has hit a very stagnant point - the hikkikomori phenomenon's popularity, lower birth rates and higher suicide rates definitely indicate that they're on hard times. Don't get me wrong, there's still Japanese entertainment that is good (I've bought quite a few Japanese games this year, and still love some new Japanese games), it just comes by considerably less often and signs only point to things getting worse with financial reports from companies like Square-Enix. Anime quality has nose-dived, game quality has nose-dived - it's sad and it bothers me. We can argue with each other until we're blue in the face as to what is "good" and what's not, but it's widespread critical reception, not just my own, and I'm on the extremely popular opinion's side. To repeat myself - Japan isn't doing poorly in gaming because they're misunderstood or all their good games are going under the radar, they're doing poorly because they're freaking atrophying.

My point, though, is that it's all subjective. What's not subjective is that most of the big names in Japan are doing critically and financially far below expectations, and many of them, like Capcom and Konami, are bending over backward to try to appeal to western tastes (and failing, if things like the Lost Planet series have been any indication). RE5 was widely considered disappointing, but a series like Dead Space, which was heavily inspired by RE4, ended up being a better sequel to RE4 than RE5 was (both financially and critically). Companies like Square Enix are reporting record failures. Indie games have also had explosive growth, lately, and most of them are coming out of the west, particularly the states. In nearly every facet, the west is trampling the east in growth, popularity and sales. Western game design is basically going through a flourishing renaissance, while Eastern gaming: Becomes more insular and OCD, like with Monster Hunter, Phantasy Star and MGS:PW Poorly imitates better Western games, like with Vanquish and Lost Planet Sticks to the same old shitty guns, like any Final Fantasy released in the last however many years, among other RPGs Or is just vapid garbage for people who care more about stylish little girls than playing a video game, like Agarest War, Otomedius, Touhou or a million other games. Sure, there's some heroics going on by companies like From Software. Atlus is still trying a few new things and hasn't gone stale yet. Suda51 is still fighting the good fight... But it's nothing like what it used to be. Japanese gaming is dying in style, dying in talent, dying in design, dying in popularity - dying in just about every way, really! Even Keiji Inafune thinks so, and the guy was easily once one of my most respected game designers. Japan isn't doing poorly in gaming because they're misunderstood or all their good games are going under the radar, they're doing poorly because they're freaking atrophying. People don't like them anymore for a reason, and it's not because they're foreign and different, it's because they're bad. Which wasn't even a Capcom game, and more evidence that Capcom has become awful given that it's a better sequel to DMC3 than DMC4 was, and definitely a better DMC game than the upcoming piece of shit is going to be. You'd sure as fuck blame a bank if they didn't protect their money, though! That analogy is absolutely asinine, Wyrdwad, and I'm ashamed to see you use it. Sony's security is something that they're required, by law, to have to protect their consumer base. Their consumer base that keeps them in business and feeds them money, no less. What they did was grossly negligent and irresponsible. They didn't just allow themselves to be fucked over, but they allowed over 100 million other people to be fucked over, too. Sony even laid off security people before this big hack happened. Seriously, look at this. They fucked up and it was their fault. They deserve scorn and they deserve to flounder for it. I could bring up a tremendous list of other awful things Sony has done, too. I can understand being fully behind some of their products, but, as a company, they're easily the most evil of the "big three." They're not just bad, they're awful. I'd argue they're contemptuous of their customer base. - - - - - Anyway, my venom toward Japan's gaming industry and game design right now is only so strong because I grew up such a tremendous fan. I wouldn't be so critical if I didn't know from experience that they could be doing so much better. I'm disgusted with their state of affairs, right now, and companies I used to borderline worship like Capcom have just become reprehensibly disfigured effigies of their old selves.

Didn't Rockstar essentially stiff the voice actors from GTA IV too? This whole "waaah Japan is eviiil" shit is getting so old. It's not just "waaah, Japan is eviiil," it's that they're sometimes more evil. And, much more importantly, the big names in Japan make so few good games anymore that it's much easier to villainize them. I mean, ports of old games are one of the most exciting things that Konami has done in years. When they can't even do that shit right, is tends to make people bitter. The evil juggernauts in the states at least have popular and well-received games being released to make people focus less on their villainy.

You'd be much better off getting Shadows of the Damned, if you're looking for another TPS Mikami had a part in. Fucking great game, that one is. Damn, I didn't even know that was out yet. Guess I'll have to check it out since Suda never lets me down. hg101.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=games&action=display&thread=7093&page=5There's a thread on it, over here. The title makes it easy to skip by, though. The demo will also make you believe the game is much better than it actually is You mean it's even worse than the demo? Holy shit. I think there were actually two demos for Vanquish... the first one seemed really rad when I played Honestly, the first part of the game (where the demo is from) is as good as the game gets.

Also, speaking of Platinum, I gotta try out Vanquish someday. Or simply go to my friend's house and play the demo on his PS3. It's pretty disappointingly mediocre :/ Game looks beautiful, but the upgrade and scoring system (which are very integral to the game) are absolute fucking rubbish and aside from a scant few brilliant scenes, the game is almost entirely just a substandard cover shooter. The demo will also make you believe the game is much better than it actually is and falsely portrays how absurdly shitty the upgrade system is. Don't listen to Japanophiles on this one, it's seriously a pretty crappy game. You'd be much better off getting Shadows of the Damned, if you're looking for another TPS Mikami had a part in. Fucking great game, that one is.

Don't worry, I'm sure they'll redeem themselves with Mega Man Legends 3. It's already going in the right direction with promised release dates being pushed back, a demo that you have to pay money for and the design team thinking it's a better idea to ask fans what to do than actually make their own game. Don't forget new playable characters no one asked for and the fact they keep dancing around the fact whether it's confirmed or not.

Beat the game tonight, and I really loved it. While I would have preferred the game to be a tad more fleshed out and slower paced, it was a really excellent action game that constantly put you right into the meat of the game. The humor is consistently very funny in addition to it being a very solid and excellently fun TPS. Suda51 has a tendency of making me always crave for more of his style, though.

Not a big deal for me for 2 reasons: 1. It implies I'd ever sell it. 2. I wouldn't delete the progress I've worked for to start again. I can see if they did this for -anything else- but somehow it just doesn't bother me here. I'm looking forward to getting this more than I'm looking forward to getting OoT3D. And the RE: Revelations demo sweetens the deal even more. It's the principle of the matter that makes it so fucking disgusting.

Ugh... that cartoon is really bad, to the point where I nearly lost faith in Kirby. I was hoping this was a free Kirby game on VC or something.
